  • MIKE PORTNOY Says DREAM THEATER “Will Start Thinking About A New Album” After Summer Of 2026

In a new chat with Troy Culpan from Australia’s May The Rock Be With You, Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy opened up about being back on the road with the band after more than a decade away.

When asked whether the comeback has felt “seamless,” Mike Portnoy said (via Blabbermouth): “It was seamless. To me, this was not just rejoining an old band; this was kind of coming home to my family. After 40 years and forming this band when we were teenagers, it’s more than just a band. We’ve lived life together. We’ve been to each other’s weddings and seen our kids grow up together, and we’ve had all these life experiences together. So coming back home to it, it was pretty seamless.”

“There were kind of baby steps that led here, which also made the transition that much more comfortable. I did [Dream Theater guitarist] John Petrucci’s solo album and tour, and then we did a Liquid Tension Experiment album with me, John, Jordan [Rudess, Dream Theater keyboardist], and Tony Levin. So there were these kinds of little steps that led to finally coming back to Dream Theater. So by the time I came back full-time to Dream Theater, it just felt like coming home to a family,” he added.

He also explained how his return influenced the writing and recording of the band’s latest release, 2025’s Parasomnia: “Well, we were definitely inspired writing together. We hadn’t written and recorded an album together since Black Clouds & Silver Linings, which came out in 2009, but we made it in 2008. So it had been 15 years since we had written and recorded an album together. So we were very inspired being together again and having that chemistry, that artistic and creative chemistry that we always had. And it was immediately there once we started working on the new album.”

Asked if the band is already mapping out what comes after Parasomnia — or if fans will “have to wait a little while”—Portnoy pointed to how long the current run has been: “Well, we have to wait, ’cause it’s been a long tour. We’ve been out for a year now at this point. We started in October of 2024. And here we are, a year later now, and by the time we get down to Australia [in February 2026] and wrap up the tour cycle a few months after that, it’ll have been a year and a half on the road. So, that’s the focus right now. But once the tour cycle wraps and concludes by next spring or so, we’ll probably take the summer off, ’cause it’s been a long road, and then start thinking about a new album after that.”

With Dream Theater currently celebrating four decades as a band on its 40th-anniversary tour (launched in late 2024), Portnoy was asked whether that milestone brings “pressure” or if it’s “more of a celebration.”

His answer was direct: “It’s a celebration. There’s no pressure. I mean, for me, it’s surreal that it’s been 40 years since we started this band. We were teenagers at college, Berklee College Of Music, back in 1985, and here we are 40 years later. We’ve been around the world dozens and dozens of times, and it’s just been quite a journey and quite a trip. And if anything, it’s just more surreal than anything. It’s just hard to believe how quickly time has flown.”

He also addressed the “discussions” that go into building the setlist for this tour, saying the process is more straightforward than people might assume: “Well, there’s not really any discussion. Those guys trust that in my lap. I’ve always been the guy who wrote the setlist in the band, at least in my time here, and for me, writing the setlist for this 40th-anniversary tour was actually easier than you would think. Coming back to the band after not having been in the band for over 15 years, whatever it’s been, it was all a fresh, clean slate for me to work with. It wasn’t like, ‘Oh, I played this song a billion times over the last couple of years.’ I hadn’t played any of these songs in so long. So for me, I was able to write with a clean slate.

“The setlist we’re going to be doing when we come down [to Australia] is slightly different than the one we’ve been doing throughout the rest of the world, because when we started the 40th-anniversary tour, we spent the first six to eight months on tour just concentrating on that,” Portnoy explained.

“But since then, the last few months we’ve been playing the new album, Parasomnia, in its entirety. So when we come down to Australia, it’s kind of gonna be a combination of the two. It’ll be a heavyweight of the 40th anniversary and the full catalog stuff, but we also wanna play a bit more of the Parasomnia album than we had, just because it’s so fresh to us, and it’s the only opportunity that the Australian fans will have to hear those songs. So it’ll be a kind of a combination of the two,” he concluded.

Dream Theater played its first show with Mike Portnoy in 14 years on October 20, 2024, at London’s O2 Arena. A co-founder of the group, Portnoy originally appeared on 10 studio albums over two decades, starting with When Dream And Day Unite and running through Black Clouds & Silver Linings, before leaving in 2010. He officially returned in October 2023, following the band’s long run with Mike Mangini, who handled drums across five studio releases and the tours that followed.

  • EMBERS OF DAWN Shares New Single “Shadow of Her Veil” From Their Forthcoming Album

Embers of Dawn unveil their newest single “Shadow of Her Veil” a track that walks the line between heavy gothic rock and doom metal with a sound that feels both timeless and unrelenting. Early listeners have compared it to a modern day Sisters of Mercy tune, capturing a haunting blend of gothic atmosphere and doom driven weight. Echoes of Type O Negative and Paradise Lost also pulse through the track, creating a dark immersive soundscape that lingers long after the final note.

“Shadow of Her Veil” explores themes of sorrow, reflection, and heavy beauty. Lyrically, the song delves into the feeling of being haunted by the past by memories by expectations and by the versions of people we hold onto even when they are no longer present. It is a meditation on loss and identity, portraying the struggle of living with memory and expectation, and the sense of being followed by someone’s lingering presence while trying to understand oneself in the aftermath.

With its brooding atmosphere and powerful emotional weight “Shadow of Her Veil” stands as one of Embers of Dawn’s most evocative works to date and offers a compelling preview of what awaits on their forthcoming album arriving in 2026.

Formed in 2022, Embers of Dawn is a genre-defying metal project born out of Jacksonville, Florida and Santa Barbara, California. The band blends elements of industrial, gothic, melodic death metal, and cyber-metal to create a sound that is both cinematic and punishing. Known for their thematic focus on alienation, modern decay, and emotional detachment, Embers of Dawn delivers music that is as introspective as it is aggressive.

The band’s music features cold, mechanical precision layered with dark melodic textures, drawing influence from acts like Pain, Dark Tranquillity, Ministry, Fear Factory, Rammstein, Static-X, Rob Zombie, Arch Enemy, and Type O Negative. With each release, they continue to explore new sonic territory, balancing technicality with atmosphere, brutality with beauty.

Their upcoming debut album Infernal Culture features drums by Adrain Erlandsson (At the Gates, Cradle of Filth, Paradise Lost, The Haunted), adding an explosive edge to their already dynamic sound.

  • AOR Supergroup TRANSATLANTIC RADIO Announces Debut Album “Midnight Transmission”

Transatlantic Radio, the international AOR supergroup based in Los Angeles, are pleased to announce the release of their debut album Midnight Transmission, out on February 20, 2026, via Frontiers Music Srl.

The band also share the first single, “Wide Awake”, along with an official video, available below. It is by far the heaviest song on the record, with lyrics about reclaiming one’s confidence after a toxic relationship. The song was written by Victor Brodén and Mattias Osbäck and it features a blazing guest guitar solo by Steve Brown (Trixter, Tokyo Motor Fist).

Victor Brodén commented: “We couldn’t be more excited for people to hear the first single, a serious swift kick to the rear in the hard rock vein with a much less serious video we had so much fun making. It shows the heavier side of the band, and it balances out other songs on our album like “Fever Dream”, which comes more from a synthwave place. We can’t wait for all AOR lovers to hear all of it!”

Brodén continued: “The completion of this album is a love letter to the music that shaped my life, musically and otherwise. The guys in this band took what was a casual idea and turned it into something beyond my wildest dreams. Mattias Osbäck is truly one of the greatest rock voices of this generation with a rough edge that brings our big, sweeping melodies to life and gives them attitude”.

RJ Ronquillo, on lead guitar, is a legend in his own right and a role model for guitarists around the world as well as one of the world’s most watched six-string heroes with his YouTube channel”, he continued. “His work on this album makes me grin ear to ear. Chris Reeve on drums is one of the most sought-after touring drummers in the world right now, and a bass player’s dream come true. Him agreeing to join this project is still mind boggling to me. Fred Kron on keyboards, my partner in production for this project, is nothing short of a wizard. There would be no Transatlantic Radio without his invaluable input, otherworldly mixes, and his ability to sprinkle magic dust on all of these songs. This is the band I could never have imagined being in growing up, and this is the record I always dreamed of making”.

An inspired celebration of classic AOR with a fresh, modern pulse, Midnight Transmission marks the official album debut of Transatlantic Radio, a truly international band founded by Victor Brodén, a Swedish-born bassist and producer now based in Los Angeles.

Conceived during the isolation of the 2020 lockdown, the project was born out of a desire to bring timeless melodic rock back into the spotlight – with a lineup as global as their sound. Fronted by powerhouse Swedish vocalist Mattias Osbäck and featuring American guitarist R.J. Ronquillo (known for his work with Ricky Martin, Santana, Stevie Wonder, and Stone Sour), the band blends European sensibility with American fire.

The lush keyboards of Fred Kron – who had his work featured in Anchorman 2 and High School Musical 2, and longtime member of the Jimmy Kimmel Live! band – add cinematic depth and vintage flair. Behind the kit is Chris Reeve, drummer for Filter and Avril Lavigne, whose dynamic style gives the album its drive and precision. At the center of it all is Brodén himself, anchoring the songs with groove, vision, and a deep understanding of the genre’s melodic soul.

Following a string of well-received singles and video releases, Transatlantic Radio made their live debut at the Malmö Melodic Festival 2024, where their sound and presence confirmed that this is more than just a studio project – it’s a band with heart, muscle, and chemistry.

Musically, Midnight Transmission is a love letter to the 80’s giants of the genre – Foreigner, Toto, Danger Danger, Starship – but it’s no nostalgia act. Each track balances polish with punch, fusing massive choruses, slick arrangements, and emotionally charged performances with crisp, contemporary production.

Packed with arena-ready anthems, the album showcases a band fully aware of their influences, yet unafraid to carve their own path forward. Midnight Transmission is more than a debut – it’s a statement: melodic rock is alive, and Transatlantic Radio is here to carry the signal.

    Transatlantic Radio Line Up:

Mattias Osbäck: Lead and Background Vocals
    RJ Ronquillo: Guitar
    Victor Brodén: Bass
    Fred Kron: Keyboards
    Chris Reeve: Drums

  • VISIONS OF ATLANTIS Share Latest Music Video For “Pirates & Kings” Featuring WARKINGS

A new collaboration is setting the stage for one of 2026’s most anticipated metal tours. Visions Of Atlantis and Warkings have joined forces for a shared single titled “Pirates & Kings”, released ahead of their co-headline run of the same name. The track blends the strengths of both groups, combining dual vocals with soaring, triumphant lyrics. It launches directly into a driving hook as the two bands craft what feels like a modern battle anthem. “Pirates & Kings” heats up the fight – be brave or be gone.”

The partnership arrives just in time for their upcoming “Pirates & Kings Over Europe” Tour, which begins February 5, 2026. The journey kicks off in Pratteln, Switzerland, and brings the two acts to 21 cities throughout Europe as they continue building their shared musical identity.

Clémentine Delauney of Visions Of Atlantis offered insight into the themes fueling the new track. She explained: “This is no longer a time for division or competition. When threats and tensions rise, the answer is to unite and become allies.”

She continued by addressing the broader mood as the year closes: “This year ends with fear and dark projections; next year is about showing the right response. Tyrants will not prevail, manipulation will not work. We will see through the smoke screen and claim our own truth.”

Elaborating further on the idea of solidarity, she added: “We believe that unity is strength. This is a time for collaboration, for opening ourselves to others, and for gathering like-minded souls. We can face anything when we stand with our tribe and our tribe is growing. We’re welcoming new warriors and shield-maidens aboard. “Pirates and Kings” are launching the movement, leading the charge. Now it’s your turn to join the call. Brave your fear, bring a friend, and reserve your seat for the most epic adventure, a place where a new world is forged, where courage is honored, where emotions run deep, and where your power is real.”

Warkings echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the need for unity across kingdoms and seas. They stated: “When the tides of chaos swell and the winds whisper of war, the kings must look beyond their own thrones. So we joined forces with Visions Of Atlantis — warriors of the endless sea — to remind the world that unity is the strongest weapon. “Pirates & Kings” is the pact we seal in fire and storm.”

The joint single and tour mark a bold step for both bands as they rally fans behind a message of strength, connection, and resilience.

  • ASIA Announces New Live Album “Live In England” And Shares Live Video For “Heat Of The Moment”

The legendary English rock collective Asia is preparing to release a new live recording titled Asia – Live In England, arriving March 13, 2026 through Frontiers Music Srl. To mark the announcement, the group has shared a live rendition of their hit “Heat Of The Moment,” accompanied by a performance video.

This upcoming release captures the band during the first of three shows at Trading Boundaries in Sussex in April 2025. The performance features Asia playing their full 1982 debut Asia along with a selection of fan-favorite tracks. The current lineup includes Geoff Downes on keyboards, Virgil Donati on drums (formerly of Planet X), John Mitchell handling guitar duties (Arena, It Bites), and Harry Whitley on bass and vocals. Together, they revisit the foundational material with a mix of respect and renewed energy.

The setlist includes well-known pieces such as “Heat Of The Moment,” “Only Time Will Tell,” “Sole Survivor,” “One Step Closer,” and “Time Again.” It also incorporates songs tied to the band’s video and bonus track era, including “Ride Easy,” “Video Killed The Radio Star,” “The Heat Goes On,” and “Daylight.”

Geoff Downes reflected on the origins of the track at the heart of the announcement: “”Heat Of The Moment” has an interesting story behind it. It was actually the final track John and I wrote for the Asia album, and it ended up being the opening track and lead-off single. We threw it together in one afternoon. I had the verse, John had the chorus, although this was a guitar picking country-style piece in 3/4 time. We straightened it all out and bingo, there it was! A couple of days later we wrote the middle 8 section, rehearsed it in the studio and recorded it straight down with band. Ironically, it still remains our most famous track to this day. Without it, I doubt the album would have been as big as it was, so I am very grateful to have been a part of the creation of “Heat Of The Moment”. It’s still a really fun track to play live, and I hope it will bring back memories, and give pleasure to the listeners and fans all over the world for many years to come”.

Harry Whitley also spoke about performing the song: “Playing “Heat Of The Moment” live is always such an incredible experience. It’s always electrifying, and this recording was no different. It was such an exciting night and a thrill to revisit all of Asia’s catalog over the three nights. We’re really looking forward to fans hearing this whole live album and the others to follow…”

Virgil Donati shared his own thoughts: “This song carries decades of history – every note, every moment – and we hope listeners feel the same passion we pour into it night after night”.

John Mitchell added his perspective on the track: “”Heat Of The Moment” is a very dear song close to my heart. Having performed it a vast number of times over the years both previously with the John Wetton solo band and with John and Geoff in ICON, from the quiet introspective acoustic version at The Borderline to the full band amped up version in front of 12000 strong in St Petersburg, it is both an uplifting anthem and a quiet tonic for the soul which never fails to bring warmth to the many”.

With more than four decades of musical history—spanning multi-platinum releases such as Asia, Alpha, and Astra—the group’s current incarnation continues to revisit significant moments from their catalog while appealing to a new audience. This live album marks the first of three releases from the Trading Boundaries shows, each dedicated to one album from the band’s early trilogy.

Geoff Downes reflected further on revisiting their debut: “Revisiting the entire first Asia album brought all the great memories flooding back from 43 years ago. In the studio with John, Steve, Carl and, of course, the great Mike Stone at the production helm. I think at the time we knew we’d made a good album but could not have predicted the enormous success that followed, that made the band a household name across the world, and particularly in America. That said, it was a result of much hard work and effort from everyone involved. So, when I had the opportunity to put together the live album with the current and fantastic lineup of Asia and in collaboration with Frontiers Music, it was really a no-brainer”.

He continued: “I was reminded of what a collection of great songs and performances made up the album — variety and musical dynamics to the fore. When we recorded it again earlier this year, I was drawn to some of the less featured tracks and realized how much they played an important part of overall album, in addition of course to the signature tracks such as “Heat Of The Moment”, “Only Time Will Tell”, etc”.

Downes added one final note: “We did this for you, the fans, and hope you really enjoy hearing these songs in the live setting performed in their entirety once again and enjoy it as much as we did creating and performing it”.

  • AXEL RUDI PELL Shares Title Track From Upcoming Album “Ghost Town”

Bochum-based guitarist and composer Axel Rudi Pell is gearing up to release his next studio album, Ghost Town, arriving March 20, 2026 through SPV/Steamhammer.

The new record continues the sound that has defined Pell’s long career: a blend of heavy, driving guitar riffs paired with memorable melodies, all delivered by his longtime band — American vocalist Johnny Gioeli, former Rainbow drummer Bobby Rondinelli, bassist Volker Krawczak, and keyboardist Ferdy Doernberg. Even after more than three and a half decades, Pell still finds ways to add fresh moments or unexpected collaborations, and Ghost Town follows that tradition with eleven new tracks.

One of the most notable songs is “Breaking Seals”, which features a standout duet between frontman Gioeli and German metal icon Udo Dirkschneider. It marks the first time Pell has paired these voices together, further highlighting the respect he commands within the rock and metal community.

Pell handled production duties on Ghost Town, while Tommy Geiger — known for work with Blind Guardian and Helloween — recorded and mixed the album at Blind Guardian Studios in Grefrath, helping shape its overall sound.

The record’s first single, the title track “Ghost Town”, offers a strong introduction to the album. It’s an energetic and tightly written piece that recalls the spirit of classic early Rainbow material, giving listeners a clear sense of what they can expect from Pell’s latest chapter.

Ghost Town will be released in the following configurations and it can now be pre-ordered here.

  • DD VERNI & THE CADILLAC BAND Releases High-Energy Holiday Single And Video For “I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas”

DD Verni & The Cadillac Band are known for marrying rock ‘n roll’s visceral energy and succinct songwriting to suave, swinging throwback arrangements and aesthetics. Yesterday, December 10, they’ve released a new video for “I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas.” Taken from their current and second album Buckle Up (Deko, 2025), the high-energy song has a red-hot arrangement with searing guitar lines, galloping rhythm, pumping horns, and infectious female backing vocals. “I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas” follows the album’s previous singles “So Long”, “Two Of A Kind”, and “Lucky 13”.

“Whenever you’re doing big band music, especially when it’s fused with 50’s style rock n roll, you have to consider doing a Christmas song,” the singer, songwriter, and guitarist explains about the song that was originally made famous by the 10-year-old Gayla Peevy back in 1953. “I had seen my niece do this song at a holiday concert when she was 4 or 5 years old—it was the first time I heard it and thought she was so damn cute. I got to thinking about how I could do a rockin’ big band version of it. Putting on a guitar and singing along to a new arrangement just came together quickly, and with Kingston and Greystar in the band adding female vocals, it just kind of made the whole thing make sense.”

For the recording of the song, DD did a demo mix of the song and sent it to the great Jim McMillen to create the horn arrangements. He just picked up on it very quickly and it all gelled together,” he explains. “Since he had done some Christmas songs in the past, Jim had a good feel for what types of arrangements would make it feel more like a holiday song. He had some great ideas for some of the background vocals,” adds DD. “The girls and I were screaming his name quite a bit as we were doing them. There are a ton of harmonies and in interesting spots…we had a lot of fun trying to put them together. And I mean c’mon, how can you be smiling when you’re singing you have a two-car garage to keep your hippo in ??!!”

When it came to creating the video, DD says he knew it had to be pure fun. “We wanted the spirt of NYC on the holidays, so we filmed all over Manhattan. Our video people had a great costumer, and we had our Hippo mascot (named Peevy, a tribute to Gayla Peevy who sang the song like 70 years ago) made to accompany us all around the city. We just had a night of laughter and fun. I love the holidays and having our own song and video to roll out each year as time goes on is a really cool thing. And there is nowhere like NYC at Christmas. I have been all over the world, to all the great Christmas Markets in Europe, but NYC is still the benchmark.”

“I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas” marks the second holiday song by DD Verni & The Cadillac Band; it follows the group’s 2023 release “We’re A Couple of Misfits”. “I wanted to do a Christmas song that had not been done so many times,” DD says of the song that was featured in the 1964 Rankin/Bass Christmas special “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” “At the heart of a lot of Christmas music is a blues progression on the chords which lends itself great to what we do. We had a friend come and do a rocking video for it and it’s a song we now play now at our holiday shows, so very very fun.”

For DD, the holidays have always revolved around family. “I have so many wonderful Christmas memories—I have seven brothers and sisters, so growing up Christmas was a madhouse at the Verni house. Tearing open boxes, just mayhem, and we loved it. I can remember one year when I was maybe 14 or so. We used to put albums we wanted on our Christmas list and my mom would go to Tower Records and ask the clerk and get the records we wanted. Well, that year I put down Black Sabbath’s We Sold Our Souls for Rock n Roll and Nazareth’s Expect No Mercy and got em both! Now my mom, God rest her soul, could not have been pleased to be making those purchases, but wanted me to have a great day and so I got ‘em. With my own kids,” he adds, “I carried on so many family traditions. We did the typical things. Every year I’d take my kids to pick out a real tree and we’d stuff it in the car and bring it home. My kids are grown but we still do stockings every year. I live at the beach now so there are different things available in a beach town rather than in the suburbs where I grew up, but it’s still pretty traditional. Of course, there’s always a massive spread of Italian food on Christmas day.”

  • MEGADETH Shares Official Trailer For “Megadeth: Behind The Mask”

Legendary metal titans Megadeth and Trafalgar Releasing have revealed the trailer for Megadeth: Behind the Mask, a cinematic legacy event that will debut on screens worldwide on Thursday, January 22.

Tickets are now on sale for the film that will screen in over 1,000 cinemas across 35+ countries on the eve of the release of the band’s final studio album out January 23. To get tickets, and for more information and to sign up for updates, fans can visit here.

In Megadeth: Behind the Mask, Dave Mustaine pulls back the curtain on 40 years of Megadeth, sharing untold stories of the band’s past and the creative fire that drives them. Interwoven throughout, audiences will get to experience the world premiere of Megadeth‘s new self-titled album in full, brought to life with a 40-year retrospective career-spanning interview and Mustaine’s own track-by-track reflections about the band’s final studio album. This one-night-only listening event will provide a first-listen to this landmark project. Megadeth: Behind the Mask is an immersive celebration of one of the most influential bands in metal history, capturing their legacy while heralding a powerful new chapter.

Leading up to the album and film’s debut, Megadeth—Dave Mustaine, Teemu Mäntysaari on lead, rhythm, and acoustic guitars, James LoMenzo on bass guitar, and Dirk Verbeuren on drums—have released two tracks: “I Don’t Care” and “Tipping Point,” the album’s first single. Megadeth have also announced a very special bonus track from the album: a reimagined version of “Ride The Lightning,” which Mustaine co-wrote with Metallica’s James Hetfield, Cliff Burton, and Lars Ulrich and was the title track from the group’s 1984 album. Pre-order the album, via Dave Mustaine‘s Tradecraft imprint in partnership with Frontiers Label Group’s new BLKIIBLK label, here. Read more about the album’s full track listing here.
