  • Gozu, VI (Blacklight Media 2026)

Boston stoners Gozu have a new one for us, VI.

Gozu has been doing their thing for about twenty years. As the title of the new record suggests, they have five previous albums out, each one with its own identity and each contributing to an increasingly impressive catalogue. The band is Marc Gaffney (vocals, guitars), Joseph Grotto (bass), Doug Sherman (guitar), and Seth Botos (drums). Talking about the new album, Gaffney says, “We wanted something that really moved and hit a nerve. I was pretty roughed up emotionally while writing. I played guitar more in the past two years than ever before. I would work, go to the gym, come home, eat and then play guitar until I went to bed. […] I think this is more of a soulful, straight forward, guitar-driven album. Lyrically, this took on a whole different feel, and it wrote itself.”

Up-tempo fuzz kicks open the gate on “Corinthian Leatherface.” This song is a groovy desert boogie piece that you don’t ever want to end. It is an idol to stoner rock that gets grittier as it goes along. Damn. “Midnight Express” is haunting doom, and “Killer Khan” is a nutcracker that keeps snapping no matter how much you try to skitter away. “Corner Lariot” whispers in your ear for the first half, then shouts to the heavens in the second.

Side B gives us “Banacek!” Here we have a freakout that ultimately falls to reflection. “They Did Know Karate” is sorrowful and filled with regret in its tones. The movement at the end of the song turns a corner and finds the same forlornity. “Gimme The Lute” is a song that has no discernable lute. It does have a great Black Sabbath riff, what sounds like a saxophone, and it is a monster that could rip the bark off any tree. “Corvette Summer” has the final word. It puts me in mind of the line from The Princess Bride that goes something like “I don’t think it means what you think it means.” It is a fantastic song with pulsing rhythm, amazing vocals, and unbeatable guitar work. This whole album smokes. Highly recommended.

VI is out on Friday, May 15th through Blacklight Media Records. Listen and buy at the links below.

  • Split Chain Drop Sweeping New Single ‘scatterbrain’

Split Chain have announced that a deluxe reimagined version of ‘motionblur’ is on its way, and it features a fantastically mind-boggling new single.

The album’s new version is set to be released on September 11 via Epitaph Records, and it’s going to be a special one. Each track on the band’s debut album has been reimagined, featuring a whole load of special guests from the next generation of the alt. scene.

So far, all we know is that London hardcore heavyweights False Reality will be leaning a hand on ‘SPIT’, and Las Vegas’ Roman Candle will be making an appearance on ‘Headway’.

Speaking on creating this fresh take on ‘motionblur’, the band have shared:

“We are so, so proud of what we created with ‘motionblur’, and we wanted to come up with a way to celebrate it all over again, in a way that both shows love to the scene that has helped us get where we are now, as well as including many of the friends that we’ve made along the way.

“We get that everyone interprets music in their own way, and so we invited a bunch of mates to feature across the album, so that we could hear their individual interpretations of the songs. It came out so much better than we could have even hoped, and we truly believe the work and energy that every person has done on every song is incredible. The cast of names on this version on this album is sick, and we know people are gonna love it just as much as we do. We’re so incredibly grateful to every single artist that has helped the deluxe become a reality and we genuinely can’t wait to hear what everybody thinks.”

If that wasn’t enough though, the album will also feature a handful of new tracks.

Recent single ‘sylvia (i won’t belong to you)’ is on the tracklist, as well as the freshly dropped ‘scatterbrain’.

Take a listen to that one below.

Speaking a little about their new arrival, the band have shared:

“Like all of our other music, ‘scatterbrain’ comes from personal experiences growing up that we’re sure everyone can relate with to some degree. It’s a song about the slow degradation of friendships, relationships and family ties. How all of a sudden, when things can seem to be at their best, the other person in the relationship, friendship or the family member seems to stop pulling their weight. They start to get caught up in their own thing, get lost in their head, and either consciously or subconsciously pull away without providing any reason whatsoever, leaving the other person with nothing but feelings of abandonment, unrequited love and questions.”

Split Chain will be heading back out on a UK headline tour later this year too, with special guests False Reality and Roman Candle.

Here’s what they had to say about that news:

“Since the band started back in 2023, everything has happened for us so quickly. Before we knew it, we’d signed with Epitaph, put out our debut LP, have spent the past 10 months since release touring across Europe, the US, Canada and Australia. There was a point amongst all of the chaos where we realised that we hadn’t actually toured the UK since way before ‘motionblur’ was released. We decided that we absolutely had to give the album a proper tour at home, and we’re so stoked that it’s finally happening. Not only that, but we also get to tour with some really sick bands in False Reality and Roman Candle, who we all love. We’re genuinely really excited to tour the UK again and can’t wait to get back out on the road.”

Twenty One Pilots are teasing something going down in their hometown of Columbus, Ohio, and it’s going to be big.

First up, people were spotting posters cropping up sporting the band’s logo with the statement ‘FRØM HERE’. They were placed outside of venues across the city, including the Nationwide Arena, Newport Music Hall, KEMBA Live!, Skully’s Music Diner, and The Schottenstein Center.

And last night (May 13), a projection was seen on the walls of the Ohio Stadium reading ‘TØ HERE’ with the date 10.17.26. October 17.

Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, there was also a DRONE SHOW.

So, what does this all mean? Well, it looks as though the band are celebrating their journey through the places they have played over the years in the city they love so much. • Selfish Things Announce New Album ‘Receptivity’

Selfish Things have shared all the details of their upcoming album ‘Receptivity’, as well as an emotional new single.

The follow-up to the duo’s 2019 debut album ‘Logos’ will arrive on October 09 via FLG, and it’s a very important one.

Reflecting on frontman Alex Biro’s journey to sobriety, it takes a powerful look at the realities of addiction and recovery. Distinctly human and vitally raw, it marks the return of a very special band.

Now four years clean and working as a sober coach and counsellor within the music industry, it’s also the start of a bright new chapter for Alex.

Speaking openly on ‘Receptivity’, he has shared:

“This wasn’t supposed to be an album. It’s still not really an album to me, or to any of us. More just… closure, I guess. I was at the beginning of my full-blown addiction on the last tour we ever did before COVID stopped the world in 2020. I hated myself and I hated the world more than I really knew at the time. I’m four years sober on the 18th of May, working as a sober coach and clinician with folks who struggle with the same things I do, even in my recovery. The profits will be donated to the hospital where I went to rehab, and (admittedly), we don’t really know where to go (or if we’ll go anywhere with it) afterward.

“The only thing that’s brought me peace in the aftermath of the cataclysm of my addiction is being of service to others. I think deep down, releasing this for whoever needs to hear it is an extension of that. Everything beautiful blooms from the mud. Everything beautiful grows from the dirt. This is for those who can accept that the things they’ve been through can either be the poison cup they sip from or the counterweight that lifts themselves and others up. That being imperfect is being human. And that suffering is singular, and universal.”

Take a listen to emotional new single ‘Effigy’ below.

Speaking on that reflective new track, Alex has said:

“Admittedly – this was a song I hated that quickly became everyone’s favourite. I wrote the lyrics in an hour at the lowest point of my sobriety in 2022. I can’t say anything about it beyond it was stream of consciousness, clearly blistering, and is something I can’t listen to often without feeling shit I’ve tried to bury. I hope it brings you peace.”

The album is also set to feature ‘Sunlight’, which arrived earlier this year.

A stark, confessional alt-rock track written towards the start of Alex’s journey to sobriety, take a listen to that one below.

Check out the artwork and tracklisting for ‘Receptivity’ below.
