Review IRON SAVIOR “Awesome Anthems of the Galaxy”
Iron Savior revisits the ’80s, but not when it comes to rock and metal. Piet Sielck and his bandmates have interpreted some of the most successful pop songs from a very colourful era. Prior to the album launch, some of the single releases showed that the endeavour is actually quite successful. The idea for the… Continue Reading → -
Album Review: Green Carnation – A Dark Poem, Part II: Sanguis
Album Review: Green Carnation – A Dark Poem, Part II: Sanguis
Reviewed by Rich Oliver
Green Carnation are a band that have never sat still and always offered something different with each album. The Norwegian band have come a long way from their death metal origins dabbling in the worlds of doom, goth and prog with albums that range from one song epics such as “Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness”, the gothic metal of “A Blessing In Disguise”, the alternative metal tinged “The Quiet Offspring” to stripping back their sound entirely on “Acoustic Verses”. The band went on hiatus between 2007 and 2014 returning with the magnificent sombre prog of “Leaves Of Yesteryear” before embarking on one of their most ambitious projects which has been an idea in the pipeline for many years – the album trilogy of “A Dark Poem” which is based on Shakespeare’s tragic Ophelia. The first part of the trilogy “The Shores Of Melancholia” was released last year to rave reviews and it saw the band “start off with guns blazing”.
With “Sanguis”, the band “invites listeners into our darkest inner rooms with some of the most raw and vulnerable songs that we’ve ever written”. It is the band at their most introspective and vulnerable, baring their souls for everyone to see and this is very much reflected in the music.
The title track kicks the album off in sterling fashion with a driving song that shifts and ebbs in its 9 minute duration from heaviness to melancholy and with a killer inclusion of hammond organ. ‘Sweet To The Point Of Bitter’ is one of the most direct songs and probably my favourite on the album with fantastic melodies and killer hooks. Whilst there are the heavier songs, this also sees the band strip it all back with the haunting ‘Loneliness Untold, Loneliness Unfold’ seeing bass player and the band’s main lyricist Stein Roger Sordal step up to the mic taking on the lead vocals. The album also finishes in sombre and utterly gorgeous fashion with the stunning ballad ‘Lunar Tale’ which has to be one of the most beautiful songs the band has ever produced.
I was seriously impressed with “A Dark Poem Part I: The Shores Of Melancholia” and whilst “A Dark Poem Part II: Sanguine” isn’t as immediate an album as its predecessor, it is also another stunning piece of progressive metal goodness. This chapter of the trilogy is one that needs a couple of listens to fully embrace but it is well worth putting in the time and attention. It definitely whets the appetite for the final part of the trilogy coming in the near future.

Rise Against with Destroy Boys at Treefort Music Hall
KRISSY COMER | Go Venue Magazine
On Tuesday, March 31st, 2026, at Treefort Music Hall, Rise Against screamed and rocked the stage with Speed of Light and then Destroy Boys opening for them.
Speed of Light is a family metal band with Mia Montalvo (vocals) Tyler Montalvo (guitar) Riley Montalvo (bass) and Nico Montalvo (drums). This band also started young and built a following early on. Seeing the power they have on stage lets you know, soon they will be opening their own shows. Think of a heavy metal backbone with thrash energy. Trust me, you won’t fall asleep during their show!
The band Destroy Boys originated in Sacramento, California around 2015. The main three members are Alexia Roditis (vocals/guitar) Violet Mayugba (guitar/vocals) and Narsai Malik (drums). They started when they were teenagers. Seeing them live you would guess they were older since they had a 80’s punk energy to them. They have even joked their vibe is like “Blondie crashing a Misfits recording session.” They also have that garage punk sound that makes you want to dance the night away! I appreciated that being queer myself, they wanted to make a point they care about the LGBTQ+ community and to show compassion especially to the trans community.
Rise Against took to the stage with high energy chords and vocals that had me and everyone else screaming with our whole chests! Their song “Savior” is my favorite and too catchy to be ignored by anyone. You have to jump around and throw your fist up! Man they know how to harmonize. They came out of the late 90’s punk/ hardcore scene but have also intertwined with melodic hardcore, punk rock and alternative rock. Current members include Tim Mcllrath (lead vocals) Joe Principe (bass/ backing vocals) Zach Blair (lead guitar/ backing vocals) and Brandon Barnes (drums/ percussion). Check out other popular songs like “Swing Life Away”, “Hero of War”, “Re-Education” and you’ll be hooked! Their songs are more than just songs, each one tells a completely different story that draws you in. You would probably be surprised by how many songs you recognize from streaming playlists or even the radio. This was my first time seeing them and I already look forward to their next show. If they aren’t playing near you on this tour, check out their new album, Ricochet, and put it on repeat! You won’t be disappointed!

Underneath the haunting glow of the midnight sun, melodies bloom. Witty Tarbox invites listeners to a journey through their latest album, Midnight Sun.

The album begins with “Whippoorwill.” The song immerses listeners in a world of country bluegrass. With its infectious rhythm, “Whippoorwill” radiates rebellious energy. It could have been easily included in the film Sinners soundtrack. Listeners can almost feel the soft breeze brushing past them. The instrumental arrangements transport you to the heart of Americana. Witty Tarbox demonstrates their knack for storytelling through evocative sounds and imagery.
Moving deeper into Midnight Sun, the second track “The Hill” shines with a distinct swagger. It captures the essence of classic Southern rock reminiscent of Lynyrd Skynyrd. The blending of old and new creates a mesmerizing rhythm that dances through the air. This track highlights the band’s ability to pay homage to the past while embracing modern production techniques. The harmony and interplay of instruments create an atmosphere that resonates with heart and soul. Each note seems to celebrate the rich heritage of American music.
Sound and Atmosphere
The album shifts gears with “Holy Cadillac.” This lively track feels like a celebration of rural America. Imagining a small-town gathering, the music paints vivid pictures of jovial festivities. The upbeat tempo and spirited lyrics encourage listeners to dance and revel. Its infectious joy could easily fit into the backdrop of a Coen Brothers film. Each strum of the guitar and beat of the drums captures the essence of community and camaraderie.
Another standout track, “La Fiesta,” introduces a touch of flair from Mexican rhythms. The vibrant sounds captivate the audience and are bound to evoke smiles. With lyrics woven in Spanish, the song adds an element of multiculturalism. One can imagine joyous scenes reminiscent of lively gatherings and celebrations. The lively spirit of “La Fiesta” undoubtedly showcases Witty Tarbox’s versatility and willingness to explore new territories.
As the album progresses, “Last Call” brings an edgier vibe to the mix. The punk influences are evident through driving rhythms and spirited guitar riffs. This enthusiasm demonstrates the band’s ability to push boundaries without losing their identity. “Last Call” epitomizes creative freedom, showcasing the musicians’ skills and their passion for experimentation. The electric energy grabs attention and captivates the listener from start to finish. Witty Tarbox expertly navigates diverse genres, making every song unique and memorable.

The penultimate track “Fentanyl Crawl” adds depth and intrigue to the album. With the incorporation of brass instruments, the soundscape becomes vibrant. The tune draws comparisons to legendary bands like the Blues Brothers. Fun and energetic, this track is a pure display of talent and creativity. The raw happiness and infectious spirit within “Fentanyl Crawl” celebrate the essence of music and connection.
Midnight Sun closes beautifully with “The Nowhere.” This poignant ballad allows the vocalist’s talents to shine through.
