Demolicious Derby IV: THE BIG CATCH-UP 2025
Written by Ellis
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Here we are, last Demolicious Derby of the year. Rather than just covering the last three months as per previous installments (I, II, and III), I figured I’d expand this to a 20-entry catch-up type piece to include others that I may have missed or not had space for over the course of the year—plus I thought it would be kinda neat to take the total number of demos covered in this series to 50 for the year, and if you add the two honourable mentions from Apr-Jun that’s 52 which is a demo for every week of the year.
I will probably keep this going next year but either way be sure to follow all of Armageddon Records, Conviction Records, Counterculture Records, Designated Moshers Unit, Fortress Records, From Within Records, New Morality Zine, Rebirth Records and Total Supply on Bandcamp—and tune into Axe to Grind Podcast’s weekly Friday Night’s Alright show—and you’ll be well-stocked with this kinda stuff regardless. In the meantime let’s get to it:
Bruo – Demo 2025

Kicking off with some proper worldwide stuff here. Bruo are from Tokyo but sound like they could be from Boston around 1982 and their demo is out on a label based in Detroit and Toronto (Total Supply). Also the shortest entry on this list at a tight 4:44.
Dementality – DEMO ’25

Solid contender for raddest artwork of the year backed up by a load of sick metallic riffs and a wicked vocal performance. The only piece of info about this band that appears to be available online is that they’re from Rochester, New York.
EZ8 – EZ8

A new band from Charlie aka Chubby of London’s Chubby and the Gang. Gloriously shouty power-pop-influenced hardcore punk that picks up pretty much exactly where Chubby’s old band left off while also evoking a fair bit of the Misfits.
Fear of Sin – Demonstration

Bleak and jagged metallic hardcore from the Rhineline scene in Germany (which apparently refers to the area between Düsseldorf/Cologne, Frankfurt and Mannheim). Presumably the band are named after the Merauder track, which probably tells you all you need to know.
Heel Turn – Demo

Wrestling-themed heavy/metallic hardcore from Norwich, UK. Hits as hard as a Kurt Angle suplex or an RKO outta nowhere or probably some way cooler wrestling deep cut that I am ill-equipped to provide. No Bandcamp/full YouTube stream yet but check out the below highlight and click through to the rest init.
Knelt – Demo 2025

One for the crusties. Knelt hail from Boston and hit the bullseye on a brand of epic, metallic and blistering D-beat driven hardcore in the vein of the esteemed likes of Cursed, Tragedy, and Trap Them.
Laugh Track – Demo 2025

Austin, Texas’ Laugh Track stand out as a singular malevolent entity on this list. Raw, gnarly, blackened shit that sounds like the sort of thing they’d be bumping on the aux inside Grond or something. Sad to see the band have called it a day already, but these tracks rip regardless.
Life of One – Demo II

Another band that have sadly called it quits already, both their demos are bloody brilliant and they were even better live. They released this one on the same day they announced they were done, going out on a high with three swagged out, Madball-coded ragers. London Style MF.
Mashaal – DEMO

Sticking with London, this one’s dedicated to and created by immigrants and the children of immigrants, with lyrics all about the immigrant experience in the UK set to a backdrop of perfectly crafted youth crew. It can feel so trite to call a band ‘important’, but in the current climate Mashaal really are.
Polyester – Demo

Fast, crusty and furious business from Armageddon Records’ hometown of Tampa, Florida featuring members of a couple of other heavy hitters on the label like Remote Control and Wasted Life. The guitar freak-out at the start of “Pseudo-shit” is ridiculously rad.
Powerball – The Demonstration

H8000 worship from Columbus, Ohio delivering on all the pointy guitar riffs and chunky mosh parts and raspy vocals about killing and shit one could ask for. Their split with Lake Verity from later this year rips too.
Price of Redemption – Demo 2025

Featuring current and former members of some great bands that sound nothing like this (like Anxious and Restraining Order), and others that come a little closer (like Broken Vow and Death Threat), Springfield, MA’s Price of Redemption play thrashy and fiery metallic hardcore of the level of quality you’d expect from such masters of the game.
Regalia – A House on the Beach is No Longer a Dream

Back to Columbus. Probably the longest hardcore demo of the year with nine tracks spanning almost 15 minutes but we won’t hold that against them. Regalia put their own spin on the classic sounds of Japan and New York to flesh out a ripping demo that some bands would be happy to call a full-length.
Scram – Yamba Hardcore Demo

Some insanely hard stuff from Lower Clarence, Australia here. Big 90s metallic hardcore vibes with straight edge bonus points—the kinda music that simply has to be played with guitars regularly pointed to the sky, as their Insta confirms it absolutely is.
Self Arrest – Demo 2025

One of a few bands to put out two great demos this year—both on the wonderful Total Supply—Self Arrest hail from Vancouver and draw most of their inspo from a load of the 00s bands that made hardcore hardcore again, like Mental, Stop and Think and 86 Mentality.
Sixlet – Demo

If you think this is pushing it a bit given Demolicious Derby’s official remit of ‘hardcore’ demos: 1) fair, but 2) there’s 20 bands on this list and they can’t all sound like Breakdown or Merauder. This band from Newark, Delaware scratches a great emo/post-hardcore type itch for when you’re done moshing and wanna stare mysteriously into the middle distance.
Soul on Fire – Demo 2025

Fast, straightforward stuff from Tampa, Florida featuring current and former members of Magnitude (great band), Point of Contact (great band), and Three Knee Deep (you guessed it… great band).
Staring Contest – Spring Demo

Raging, bouncy, classic hardcore dedicated to the trans youth of the band’s home city of Indianapolis. The lyrics of “Whipping Girl” hit particularly hard: “Object of desire, target of rage / The whipping girl is forced to bear the brunt of the blame”.
Uphold – Demo

Another scorcher from Florida. This one evokes a fair bit of Terror and Trapped Under Ice and a load of that Bridge Nine era stuff—much like the Dead Stare demo covered in Volume II of this series. Nuff said surely.
WMD – Demo #2

Another band with two killer demos out this year. Just great, gritty hardcore from Detroit. Also features George W. Bush’s greatest ever quote—that is, at least until we get something like an “aaaah it’s so hot down here” whenever he meets his maker.
Well that’s it. There are still so many I could have included but didn’t. Such is life. Hope you found some new stuff you like and some labels worth following. Long live the demo.

YNGWIE MALMSTEEN Unloads On Ex-Vocalists, Says “They Are Trying To Capitalize From His Brand”
Legendary Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen has taken aim at some of the vocalists from his early solo years, accusing them of “trying to capitalize from [his] brand”.
Now 62, Malmsteen has shared the stage and studio with a long list of well-known singers over the years, including Jeff Scott Soto, Mark Boals, Joe Lynn Turner, Göran Edman, Michael Vescera, Mats Levén, and Tim “Ripper” Owens. More recently, Nick Marino has covered some live vocal parts.
On Thursday, December 18, Malmsteen posted a message on social media that was later deleted. In it, he wrote: “So it has come to my attention that these hired and paid singers that I hired for my solo records are all trying to capitalize from my brand!”
“Let’s be clear: performing on MY SOLO records does not equal ownership, authorship, or legacy. Writing a line here and there doesn’t make someone a songwriter, and singing my material doesn’t make it theirs. They were merely given a salary (work for hire) to put down MY written parts, just like the keyboard player, bassist, drummer, etc.”
“If the only way you can tour or get attention is by leaning on my brand and using my name and album titles and my SOLO catalog, then you’ve already answered the question of who actually built something. And -What have they recorded/created the last 30,40 years?”
What set off the latest comments isn’t confirmed, but the timing lines up with news involving Mats Levén. Levén recently said he’ll perform two shows in Japan in May 2026, and those dates are expected to lean heavily on songs connected to the one Yngwie Malmsteen release he sang on: 1997’s Facing The Animal.
Earlier this month, a fan asked Mats Levén whether he had a hand in writing lyrics for Facing The Animal. He replied: “Well, a bit different from song to song…a song like ‘Braveheart’, Yngwie had the title to the song, and then I wrote most of the lyrics and some melody lines. Yngwie was quite open to letting me contribute. I wrote 30-35% of the Facing The Animal album.”
“Alone In Paradise” was an old idea from the Odyssey [See image gallery at www.sonicperspectives.com] . I only completed that lyric. Actually, Joe Lynn Turner‘s backing vocals were still there when we recorded. Tracks like “Enemy” and “Facing The Animal”, I wrote all lyrics and melody lines for.”
These days, after decades of working with hard-rock and metal vocalists, Yngwie Malmsteen often handles lead vocals himself. His current lineup includes keyboardist Nick Marino, bassist Emilio Martinez, and drummer Kevin Klingenschmid.
Vocals play a limited role on Yngwie Malmsteen’s most recent album, 2021’s Parabellum, appearing on only four tracks. The title comes from Latin and is commonly translated as “Prepare For War.”

MASTER BOOT RECORD will be touring in support of their HARDWAREZ full-length, released in 2024 via Metal Blade Records.
HARDWAREZ explores the duality of technology. The LP, which follows 2022′s Personal Computer and 2020′s Floppy Disk Overdrive, comes from the expansive mind of multi-instrumentalist and MBR mastermind Vittorio D’Amore (aka Victor Love), an Italian producer who emerged from the underground as an anonymous project in 2016 to create the soundtrack for the cyberpunk point-and-click adventure game VirtuaVerse. The project seamlessly evolved into a standalone entity, releasing over fourteen albums in just a few years.
To create HARDWAREZ, the technologist worked by live streaming his desktop on YouTube while composing new music. Everything is programmed via MIDI. Intensive touring augmented with live musicians helped Love make the decision to include real guitars to achieve a massive sound and boost the enhanced frequency spectrum of the instrument. Additionally, the tracks feature sections without overdubs and with updated drum samples and a new mixing approach, creating a more vibrant and punchy drum sound.
HARDWAREZ, earned the #3 spot on Billboard’s Current Electronic Albums chart upon its first week of release. Elsewhere, the record took the #11 position on the Current Hard Music Albums chart, #17 on the Top New Artists Albums chart, and more!

RAINBOW “The Temple Of The King 1975-1976” 9CD Remastered Boxset Is Landing In March
Rainbow‘s The Temple Of The King 1975-1976 is the most comprehensive collection of the opening phase of Rainbow’s career to date, and is the first in a series of anthology sets covering the career of legendary guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. The 9-CD set, newly mastered by Andy Pearce & Matt Wortham, is housed in Deluxe 7” packaging featuring a 24-page booklet featuring memorabilia, photos, and sleeve notes by music writer Rich Davenport.
The set spans the band’s first two years and includes their debut album, Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow; their breakthrough record, Rising, and the extended German concerts that were compiled as part of the double live album On Stage.
The final two discs comprise rare recordings, many of which are featured on CD for the first time, including band rehearsals, single edits, and rough mixes. Pre-order the boxset here.
Rainbow was initially formed as a Ritchie Blackmore solo project in the early months of 1975, after a Deep Purple tour of the previous year. On that tour, they were supported by the American band Elf. The singer of Elf, Ronnie James Dio, left an impression on the already legendary guitarist Blackmore. Blackmore asked him to sing on a cover of the song “Black Sheep Of The Family”. The sessions went so well that a full album began to take shape, with Blackmore and Dio collaborating on original songs. Blackmore had such foresight in this project that he solely financially funded the work and thus began the mystical musical world of Rainbow. The resulting record, Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, was recorded between February and March 1975 at Musicland Studios in Munich, Germany. With Blackmore‘s composing prowess and Dio‘s mystical lyrics, the band was set to take fans to a new level.

The album’s unusual stylistic blend of hard rock and classical music was partly inspired by Blackmore taking up the cello to help him break free of the confines of conventional guitar chord progressions. Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow was a top 15 hit in the UK and top 30 in the US, and was such a positive experience that in the Summer of 1975, that Blackmore left Deep Purple to commit himself fully to Rainbow.
Recruiting bassist Jimmy Bain, keyboard player Tony Carey, and ex-Jeff Beck Group drummer Cozy Powell, Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow undertook their first tour. By 1976, the band’s name had been shortened to Rainbow, and a second album, Rising, was recorded in February of that year once again at Musicland. Rising, with its iconic sleeve of a fist holding a rainbow in a mystical scene, only features six tracks, including two epic compositions on side two, one of which, “Stargazer”, is widely regarded as a Rainbow classic and a landmark in hard rock. The original musical stylings are often touted as the 1st neo-classical metal band. It was the perfect melding of Ritchie‘s guitar wizardry and Ronnie‘s soaring, powerful vocals.
Taking the album on the road in 1976, the band added Deep Purple‘s “Mistreated” to their setlist, and song lengths were stretched to include improvisational sections. The band recorded shows in Germany and Japan, which were edited and compiled as the live album On Stage, released in the summer of 1977. Three of the German shows from Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Nürnberg are being released together for the first time outside of Japan on The Temple Of The King 1975 – 1976.
By the end of 1976, Rainbow had established itself as one of the cornerstones of British rock, and, under the leadership of the never-predictable but ever-astonishing guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, would become synonymous with some of the most loved and popular rock songs of the seventies and eighties.

Night Beyond is Jánnos Eolou’s Album Out Now
Good Day Noir Family,
Some albums aim to impress through volume, and others quietly reshape your inner landscape.Night Beyond is Jánnos Eolou’s Album Out Now
Night Beyond by Jánnos Eolou clearly belongs to the latter category.
While listening for the first time, it becomes evident that this record is less about individual songs and more about a continuous emotional journey that unfolds patiently and with purpose.
The album opens with “Unwatched Stars,” and a sense of vastness emerges. The melody feels fragile yet confident, almost mirroring the flicker of distant constellations. Moreover, the arrangement avoids excess, allowing space to breathe. As a result, the listener is invited to slow down and simply exist within the music. This introduction sets the tone for what follows: introspective, cinematic, and deeply human.
Shortly after, “Your Breath” shifts the emotional temperature. While maintaining restraint, the track carries warmth and quiet hope. The melodic flow suggests intimacy, and therefore it feels perfectly suited to underscore a tender cinematic moment. In contrast to the opener’s cosmic solitude, this piece leans toward connection and closeness.
Then comes “Breakwater,” which subtly introduces more organic textures. The presence of traditional elements, including mandolin-like tones paired with sweeping strings, creates a dreamlike environment. Consequently, the track feels rooted in folklore while still drifting somewhere beyond time. Similarly, “Unwritten Letter” continues this reflective mood, offering a sense of peace that feels almost visual. One can easily imagine open landscapes and slow-moving skies while the music gently unfolds.
As the album progresses, “Perseids” stands out for its expansive emotional reach. Here, the music captures wonder and humility, reminding the listener of their small place within something immeasurable. Meanwhile, “Night in Pieces” introduces a more fragile atmosphere. The track feels like an emotional fracture, capturing the stillness that follows separation. However, it never descends into despair, choosing instead to observe sorrow with grace.
Finally, “After You Left” closes the album with quiet resolve. Memories surface like faded photographs, and although there is melancholy, there is also acceptance. By this point, the album feels complete, having traveled through longing, reflection, and quiet understanding.
Night Beyond is a carefully constructed work that values subtlety over spectacle. Jánnos Eolou demonstrates a refined artistic vision.

YUNGBLUD Opens Up on “The Howard Stern Show” & Shares Cover For BLACK SABBATH’s “Changes”
Yungblud appeared on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show on Monday morning, December 15, to promote his Grammy-nominated album Idols. During the interview, he performed a cover of Black Sabbath’s “Changes” and reflected on his experience playing at Back To The Beginning, Ozzy Osbourne’s final live show.
Yungblud’s profile has continued to grow throughout the year, beginning with his performance of Black Sabbath’s “Changes” at Ozzy Osbourne’s farewell show in July, just weeks before Osbourne’s death. For Yungblud, a lifelong fan, the moment carried deep personal meaning.
“I was riddled with ADHD, angry, full of energy, like my teachers didn’t know what to do with me, so I immediately identified with this character who was celebrated for his individuality and his madness,” he said of the late frontman.
Reflecting further on the experience, Yungblud spoke about the significance of being welcomed into Osbourne’s world.
“I can never be more thankful to Sharon and Ozzy for giving me that moment to show the world what I can do,” Yungblud continued. “When you feel Osbourne’s arms around you, you have to try your fucking best to honor that moment and honor him forever.”
During the conversation with Stern, Yungblud also revealed that it was Ozzy Osbourne himself who encouraged him to include the performance on Idols, which became Yungblud’s fourth studio album.
“He was like, ‘Hey … have you seen the reviews of your cover of “Changes?” You’ve got to fucking put it out, man,’” the rocker recalled.
The discussion later shifted toward the state of rock music today and how it continues to evolve. Yungblud pushed back against the idea that the genre needs saving by a single figure.
“It’s such a sacred genre,” he declared. “Every fucking dad says to his kid, ‘I don’t like that – it sounds like what I knew,’ and it always happens.”
“People always put so much pressure on one person bringing it back … That’s a load of bullshit,” the rocker continued before referencing current bands like Turnstile, Amyl And The Sniffers, Geese, and Knocked Loose.
Explaining his own creative approach, Yungblud emphasized ambition, risk, and scale as guiding principles behind his recent work.
“What I wanted to do was bring a sense of theater and showmanship and adventure and nine-minute songs in a 2025 way,” he explained. “It was a fucking risk … [but] we have a fanbase that will go with us.”

Weight Of Thought is 2K Damage’s Single Out Now
Good Day Noir Family,
2K Damage is here with “Weight Of Thought,” a track that stretches the boundaries of modern heavy music while diving into a world of tension, contrast, and emotional volatility.Weight Of Thought is 2K Damage’s Single Out Now
The song opens in a haze of dramatic pads that feel like storm clouds gathering on a distant horizon.
The atmosphere is thick, uneasy, and almost cinematic. Yet, before the listener can fully settle into that space, the duo unleash a fierce guitar riff that hits with the force of a sudden downpour.
The impact is immediate, yet the band move with precision. Their approach reveals a clear vision: they want intensity, but they also want control. Consequently, the transition into the verse is striking. The music pulls back slightly, as if held by an invisible leash, and the vocal enters with a tone that shifts between restrained melody and sharpened aggression. Because of this balance, the track avoids falling into predictable patterns and instead develops into something more layered and thoughtful.
As the chorus arrives, the tension breaks open. The riff expands, the drums lock into a punchy groove, and the vocal gains new height. There is weight here—emotional, rhythmic, and structural—yet it never feels bloated. The duo know how to pace themselves. Then, after the chorus, the song drifts into a stunning ethereal section. It’s a moment that feels like stepping out of a storm into a brief pocket of still air, only to be pulled back into turbulence seconds later.
The vocal performance carries a surprising range. Sometimes melodic, sometimes sharpened with a well-timed scream, it elevates the emotional profile without tipping into excess. Additionally, the rhythmic variations lift the entire track—especially in the outro, where the patterns twist and contract like a machine overheating before shutting down. It is unpredictable, urgent, and thrilling.
“Weight Of Thought” feels like a track built to reward repeat listens. Every shift in mood speaks to the duo’s desire to push their craft into new territory. Their sense of atmosphere, aggression, and experimentation places them among the most intriguing modern heavy acts emerging today.
Weight Of Thought is 2K Damage’s Single Out Now!
Visionary!

BRIAN MAY Teams Up Again With TALIA DEAN For “Praise Your Name”
Singer-songwriter Talia Dean has reunited with Queen guitarist Brian May for a new holiday release, unveiling the official music video for the Christmas song “Praise Your Name.” The video, directed by Simon Lupton, also features the award-winning St Anne’s Catholic High School for Girls Gospel Choir.
The collaboration marks another creative chapter between Dean and May, who have worked together multiple times. According to May, the project has been quietly in development far longer than fans may realize.
“Only the most EPIC Christmas track EVER!!! It’s a tour de force — a beautifully simple yet powerful and joyous song of praise for Christmas, written by Talia herself”, Brian said.
“Yes, I did have a hand in its production — we’ve been secretly working on this since before last Christmas! It’s been worth the wait”.
Dean also shared her own thoughts on the release, emphasizing the effort that went into bringing the song and video to life: “This is going to be epic. We’ve worked hard on this… almost caught pneumonia making this music video”.
Brian May’s connection with Talia Dean extends beyond this release. Last year, he appeared in her widely noticed music video for “You Made Your Bed,” further cementing their ongoing creative partnership.
