  • Ulver Drop Digital Single “Hollywood Babylon (Gazelle Twin Remix)”

    Ulver_05577_by_Haavard_Joergensen

Earlier today, Norwegian avant-garde black metal/electronic outfit Ulver released a surprising remixed version of their track “Hollywood Babylon” that features the highly atmospheric and distinctive sound of Gazelle Twin (aka Elizabeth Bernholz). So if you know the track from Ulver’s 2024 album Liminal Animals, you may want to check this new variant out.

Created to sort of play in both artists’ musical worlds, “Hollywood Babylon (Gazelle Twin Remix)” leans into the experimental side of things. This comes just a few weeks after the band’s latest album Neverland finally got its physical release on February 27.

Speaking of this new version of the track, Ulver mastermind Kristoffer Rygg said they were excited to see what Bernholz would be able to do with it.

“We became instant fans of Gazelle Twin when we both played at Austria’s Donau Festival in 2017, and we are thrilled to have Elizabeth lend her unique vision and voice to ‘Hollywood Babylon’. Her approach captures the song’s essence while adding new and different layers of emotional depth and contemporary resonance.”

Likewize, Bernholz said she enjoyed working on the project, stating that she was excited to get her own darker side of things played into the track.

“I have really enjoyed working on ‘Hollywood Babylon’ – it is such a great song. I love the vibe, chord sequences, vocals and lyrics, which feel ever more prescient. I wanted to bring all those things to the foreground, plus add a bit of GT darkness and my voice.”

You can check out the remixed version of “Hollywood Babylon” below. Neverland is available now wherever you get your music.

  • Video Premiere: Annihilus Mundi – “Absolute Terror”

Extreme prog metal one-man band Annihilus Mundi return with their newest single and music video “Absolute Terror.” Check out the video below.

The track features an intense vocal performance from Noah Magnelli, delivering the song’s conceptual narrative with visceral energy, as well as a blistering guest guitar solo from Chris Jones of Aether Realm.

“Lyrically, ‘Absolute Terror’ draws inspiration from the metaphysical Absolute Terror Field (AT Field) concept from Hideaki Anno’s landmark anime Neon Genesis Evangelion,” Daniel Saillant, the man behind the band, explains. “In the series, the AT Field appears as a protective barrier used by the EVA units against the Angels, but it also represents a deeper philosophical idea: the emotional walls humans construct out of fear that prevent genuine connection with one another.

“The song explores the psychological struggles of two of the anime’s central characters, Shinji Ikari and Asuka Langley-Soryu. The first verse reflects Shinji’s desperate longing for approval from his emotionally distant father, while the second delves into Asuka’s trauma after witnessing her mother’s suicide. Through the chorus and final verses, the song expands on the philosophical meaning of the AT Field, portraying fear itself as the invisible barrier separating individuals from meaningful human connection.”

  • Gradience Drops “Master to the Slave” Video/Single

    – March 19th, 2026 –

Watch/stream “Master To The Slave” HERE

Danish metallers GRADIENCE are pleased to drop their new single and companion video for “Master To The Slave.” The track is taken from the band’s forthcoming new full-length, set for release on their new label home of Metal Blade Records later this year.

The usually clear-cut boundary between apocalyptic, sludgy blackened death metal and dark urban trap-rap is thrillingly pulverized by GRADIENCE. Lines of musical convention are further blurred by disarmingly emotive and intimate vocal lines, and a vibrant sound picture heaving with glacial synths and hypnotic sonic details. At first it might daunt and confuse those who like their boundaries clear-cut, but at the heart of GRADIENCE‘s brash and radical new sound is an authentic and heartwarming new friendship. In 2022, guitarist Jakob Harris and vocalist Gavin Mistry struck up an immediate creative rapport at a Copenhagen show for local deathcore heroes Cabal. Although from very different backgrounds – Jakob a visual artist and musician playing in “a popcore band,” Gavin is a main player “in different hip-hop constellations” – they quickly found common ground in an area both were keen to explore.

It just feels completely natural for us to mix everything,” notes Harris. “We’re really up for whatever label people want to put on us. We’ve actually found it difficult for ourselves to narrow it down Harris but we like to think of ourselves as just being a metal band. We’ve used the description ‘blackened rap metal’ just to catch people’s attention. But to me, rap is just a tool we use to convey an emotion or feel, just like we use screams and melody. We’ve found different styles of rap and singing that suit Gavin really well, and when we’re writing vocals for a song, we’re only thinking about what would be the best fit with the energy and vibe. For us, there needs to be an emotional connection in order for heavy music to resonate with the listener on a deeper level.”

Harris comments further on the band’s new single, “The song is about Gavin’s struggle with managing his self-destructiveness and we wanted the video to feel like a physical manifestation of Gavin’s internal war. The moment in the music video where the hangman’s noose becomes a crown of rope is a deliberate visual metaphor of Gavin gaining the upper hand of what could potentially destroy him.

  • AN NCS ALBUM PREMIERE (AND A REVIEW): DEIMLER — “DARKNESS FALLS”

(written by Islander) Death metal does not have to be interesting, innovative, or even moderately intelligent to be enjoyable. We all know this and most of us will freely admit it. In fact, sometimes it’s at its most enjoyable when its dumber than a box of rocks. And conversely, sometimes it can become so busy, […]

  • Hanging Garden – Isle of Bliss Review

For nearly twenty years, Hanging Garden have quietly dabbled in the same sort of melodic melancholy as their more well-known counterparts, Katatonia, Insomnium, and Swallow the Sun. I first wandered into their brand of gothic sadboi melodoom with 2021’s Skeleton Lake, thanks to Steel’s glowing writeup. While I’ve enjoyed what I’ve heard from them since, what really hooked me was their 2025 EP, The Unending. They really honed their melodic game, particularly with an incredible hook on “Morgan’s Trail,” and I was hopeful this EP was a sign of a new direction for the band. Well, they do take a new direction, but not quite the one I expected. Despite its cheerful name, Isle of Bliss proves to be a much darker work than you may be accustomed to from this septet. Their newfound darkness opens up layers of depth, proving the band capable of bringing out beauty from even the darkest depths.

Despite the darker direction, Hanging Garden still dabble in a wide range of moods. On Isle of Bliss, they skillfully blend crushing riffs and Toni Hatakka’s deathly, muscular growls with gentle arpeggios and soft croons from Riikka Hatakka. Opener “To Outlive the Nine Ravens” illustrates this perfectly, as it blends dark growls with lovely trem melodies and a gentle duet with some more feel-good trems in an energetic tune that starts the record off right. Isle of Bliss then takes an unsettling turn on “Eternal Trees of Turquoise,” which features a duet of a different nature, where Toni’s menacing growls mix with Riikka’s sinister blackened rasps. Her performance reminded me a lot of the demon vocalist from Vesseles earlier this year, and it is a chilling turn away from the usual foil to Toni’s harsh growls. Things take yet another turn on the appropriately named “Isle of Bliss” and deceptively named “To the Gates of Hel.” These cheerful tunes feature uplifting guitar tones and some wonderfully catchy choruses sure to put your fearful heart at ease. In sum, Isle of Bliss is a moody beast that will hit you in all the feels.

Isle of Bliss contains lush beauty thanks to its patient and melodic songwriting. At times, Hanging Garden shines a light through the darkness with soaring choruses and powerful melodic guitar leads that turn gloom into cheer. On “The Blights Nine,” a trem lead dispels the terrifying horror of Riikka’s rasps, while on “Arise, Black Sun,” the guitar melody transforms a growling duet into a piece of blackened beauty. The tremolos and the tour-de-force vocal performances from the Hatakka pair are not the only aspects that elevate the music. Hanging Garden use chugging, thick riffs to cast a doomy pall, whispery synths to invoke dreamy atmospherics, and piano segments to produce feelings of tranquility. All of these elements coalesce on the atmospheric climax, “Her Wailing Light,” whose beautiful chorus is a wonder in a sea of some great moments throughout Isle of Bliss.

As much as I didn’t want this record to end, there are a few areas where Hanging Garden could have done some trimming. “To Outlive the Nine Ravens” and “To the Gates of Hel” creep nearly into the seven-minute range, where their repetitive, formulaic nature begins to grow thin. Yet they are such terrific songs that the desire to stretch them out is forgivable. Perhaps the biggest letdown is the finale, “Beneath the Fallen Sky,” an atmospheric piece that lacks the punch of preceding tracks. “Her Waning Light” feels like a much more appropriate closer, with its emotional trem lead followed by such a tranquil conclusion. “Beneath the Fallen Sky” may fit a narrative arc as a resolution, and it’s really not a bad song, yet I think it’s just in the nature of resolutions to sometimes feel unsatisfying in the wake of highly emotional moments that precede them.

While I am a relative newbie to Hanging Garden, as far as I can tell, Isle of Bliss is their finest achievement to date. The addition of darker aspects to their sound, while remaining true to their roots, brings depth to their songwriting. Almost every song packs a wallop thanks to powerful singing and incredibly catchy and evocative guitar leads. This band poured their heart and soul into this one. It is a stunning record that will leave you in a state of bliss from start to finish.

The young London rapper fakemink has a whole lot of hype around him, and his music has enough fuzzed-out weirdo energy to justify that. He was one of our favorite new artists of 2025, and he ended the year by playing his first few North American tours, including a set at Tyler, The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival. This year, fakemink released his EP The Boy Who Cried Terrified, and his album Terrified is supposed to arrive in spring. He was already set to play US festivals like Coachella, Rolling Loud, and Lollapalooza. Now, he’s announcing a whole North American tour, followed by runs in the UK and Europe.
