“…the new “mythical” album is taking shape, believe me, the best is yet to come!”

Earlier this summer, Mark Read shared these words on social media.

This is huge news for the international A1 community. Fans have been buzzing with excitement, expressing their anticipation and joy. The announcement has reignited a sense of community and nostalgia among the international A1 fanbase.

A new album seems to have been planned for a while, maybe even several years ago.

The covid pandemic affected many of us, including A1. Back in 2020, Christian Ingebrigtsen told me this.

Due to the pandemic, the new album had been delayed. As Mark promised, Christian said the band’s upcoming album would probably be one of its best.

This is an outtake of my interview with Christian:

The full interview includes Christian speaking about Armour, a song that may appear on their upcoming album. You can see the full interview here.

    This is Armour:

ON STAGE: Christian Ingebrigtsen discussed A1’s upcoming album with Michael Hartmann in 2020. -It’s going to be one of our best, Christian said.

  • Wacken Open Air 2024: Paradise Found

Wacken Open Air 2024 was more than just a festival; it was a pilgrimage for metalheads from around the globe, and for me, it felt like coming home. Walking through those iconic fields, surrounded by fellow fans with the same undying passion for heavy music, was magical.
This year’s lineup, the crowd’s energy, and the performances’ raw power created an atmosphere that words can hardly capture. Being there reminded me of why Wacken is a rite of passage for any metal fan—a place where the music, the people, and the experience combine to form memories that last a lifetime. Let’s dive into what I can already say was one of the finer years in the 20 years I’ve been attending.
Wacken Open Air 2024 delivered yet another unforgettable experience, solidifying its reputation as one of the world’s premier metal festivals. This year’s edition, held from July 31 to August 3, attracted 85,000 metalheads to the small village of Wacken in northern Germany. The festival offered a packed lineup featuring performances from legendary bands like Korn, Amon Amarth, Scorpions, Blind Guardian, and many more.
The festival’s theme, “Witches & Warlocks,” lent a mystical and enchanting atmosphere, influencing everything from stage designs to performances. Fans embraced the theme, adding to the festival’s unique and immersive vibe. But honestly, the people make this festival such a pleasure to attend.
The crowd at Wacken Open Air is among the best you’ll ever find at any festival. There’s a unique camaraderie among the sea of black-clad metalheads, where everyone becomes part of one massive, welcoming family regardless of where they come from. It’s a place where strangers instantly become friends, whether you’re sharing a beer in the campsite or headbanging side-by-side in the front row.
The spirit of unity is palpable, more than ever in the 2024 edition of the festival. People look out for each other, lifting up those who fall in the mosh pits and cheering with genuine joy during epic guitar solos. This collective passion and respect for the music and each other make Wacken’s crowd not just attendees but an essential part of the festival’s heart and soul.
One of the standout aspects of Wacken 2024 was the weather. This year’s event was blessed with predominantly sunny skies after the rain-soaked struggles 2023, where heavy rain caused severe disruptions. This change not only improved the overall experience but also allowed for a smoother flow of activities, with fans arriving early thanks to a new access system that eased the traffic and crowd control issues that have plagued previous years.
Musically, the festival did not disappoint. Headliners like the Scorpions overcame initial skepticism from the metal purists to deliver a powerful performance that captivated the crowd. Korn’s set was another highlight, with their nu-metal anthems echoing across the festival grounds, proving their enduring appeal.
Blind Guardian’s performance, particularly their rendition of “The Bard’s Song,” was a moment of unity among the crowd, with thousands singing along as the sun set behind them. The energy was palpable, and the band’s connection with the audience was one of the most talked-about aspects of the festival.
The festival also provided a platform for emerging and established acts to shine. Bands like Dragonforce brought their signature high-speed metal to the stage, generating one of the fastest circle pits in Wacken history. Meanwhile, Amon Amarth’s Viking-themed performance, complete with a collective “Row!” chant, added to the festival’s epic scale.
Aside from the music, Wacken 2024 offered a variety of activities and experiences that have become staples of the festival. From metal yoga sessions to medieval-themed sword fighting in the Wackinger Village, there was something for everyone. Adding new camping options, including the ability to arrive several days early, further enhanced the festival experience, allowing fans to settle in and soak up the atmosphere long before the first band hit the stage.
Regarding logistics, the festival ran smoothly, with significant improvements over previous years. Introducing a new ticketing system, allowing for early access to the camping areas, was well-received and helped prevent the traffic jams and chaos that have occasionally marred the festival’s opening days. Additionally, the event’s live stream, which garnered millions of views globally, allowed those who couldn’t attend to experience the magic of Wacken from afar.
However, not everything was perfect. Some festival-goers noted that the Scorpions’ set felt overly commercial, with the crowd’s enthusiasm seemingly dipping during less iconic tracks. Additionally, the minor rain showers, although providing some much-needed cooling, reminded attendees of the unpredictability of Wacken’s weather, though it did not lead to any significant disruptions.
In conclusion, Wacken Open Air 2024 was a resounding success. It merged an incredible lineup, improved logistics, and a vibrant, enthusiastic crowd to create a festival experience that few others can match. Whether a veteran attendee or a first-timer, Wacken 2024 offered something for every metal fan, reaffirming why it remains a pilgrimage site for metalheads worldwide. With the festival already sold out for 2025, it’s clear that Wacken Open Air continues to set the gold standard for what a metal festival should be.
The festival’s official after-movie and live performances are available online for those who missed out, offering a glimpse into the electric atmosphere that only Wacken can deliver. Expectations are already sky-high for what the organizers will pull off next year.
Please get your tickets for the 2025 edition here before they sell out!
  • BFnD, Featuring Jeff Westlake (Hydrogyn) and Rising New Talent, Sammi DeVille, Set To Drop Debut Album

The debut album from BFnD has been a year in the making, and it is hot. So hot that it’s called Fire.

What started out as an experiment by veteran rocker and Hydrogyn founder Jeff Westlake with enigmatic singer-songwriter Sammi DeVille quickly turned into a full EP. Soon, it had turned into a full album.

“This album is scorching,” Westlake says. “From Sammi’s killer lyrics and her incredible vocals to working with fellow newcomers Jamie Hollow and Kayla Watson, this entire experience is refreshing. It really has built itself into a frenzy.”

Two singles and videos – “I’ve Seen The Devil” and “Don’tcha Walk Away” – already have served notice to the rock community that this band is a force to be reckoned with. It is, in fact, a BFnD.

The rest of the track listings are:

    X I’m Watching

    X Gasolina

    X Fire

    X Cannibal

    X No risk no reward

    X On and On

X And at least one bonus track

Many familiar names from Westlake’s music career step in to provide assistance to the band. Those include Jeff Boggs, Ryan Stepp, John Cardilino, Todd Long, Jacob Freed, Patrick Liotard, Anthony Dura, Mickael Jublin and Joe Migz. There’s even an appearance by late Hydrogyn bassist Chris Sammons.

Pre-sales of Fire start next week, so keep an out for that. Work nearly has finished on BFnD’s second release that is expected to be out for the holidays, and the band already has begun the writing and demoing process for the third release.

Trust us when we say this is one Fire you’re going to want to play with – and play repeatedly.

  • Wychmore Hill Suite (Anthony Phillips, 2024)

We all know Ant Phillips lives in a musical world of his own, a very charming one. This track comes from his 2024 “The Golden Hour” album, twelfth installment of the “Private Parts and Pieces” series, an archival project begun in 1978. This 19 minutes suite for classical and 12 string guitars was recorded around 1989 and IMHO is the brightest gem of “The Golden Hour”: varied, well balanced, full of beautiful themes and built up on a coherent, dynamic pattern. One wonders why such a beauty had to wait a release for more than 35 years.

Ant Phillips took himself this beautiful cover photo.

Its four movements ( I. Country Mile – II. Ring of Steel – III. Peaceful Land – IV. Jack The Lad ) each feature two or three recurring themes and alternate fast and calm moments, so they’re never boring and conjure up folk, gypsy, pastoral and classical roots, sounding fully English the way only Phillips can do. A parting note about the title: a Wychmore Hill doesn’t exist, Ant was inspired by Northern London’s Winchmore Hill: he switched to a sharper and almost medieval sound.
