Fake Names will release its third album, Punk Ruins, on Oct. 23 through Epitaph. It is the band’s first new music in three years, and the lyric video for the new single “If You Could See Me Today” is out now.

The song grows jangle pop out of the band’s D.C. post-hardcore roots, pairing crackling guitars with gritty basslines and easygoing, magnetic vocals while looking back on remnants of a distant past.

The lineup features guitarists Brian Baker (Minor Threat, Dag Nasty, Bad Religion) and Michael Hampton(S.O.A., Embrace, The Faith), vocalist Dennis Lyxzén (Refused, Invsn), bassist Johnny Temple (Girls Against Boys, Soulside) and new drummer Mario Rubalcaba (Rocket From The Crypt, Off!). Together they mix D.C. post-hardcore with modern power-pop on Punk Ruins, a record that picks apart political manipulation and the social neurosis of modern life while still holding onto punk as a source of salvation.

The album was tracked at Electrical Audio in Chicago with producer Matthew Barnhardy, whose credits include Superchunk and Bob Mould. The band describes the result as a blend of fury and fun.

“We recorded twelve songs in five days, and all of them are on the album,” Baker explains. He adds that Lyxzén finished his vocals in a single day.

Asked how the group pulled together a finished record in the time some of its members’ other bands spend on pre-production alone, Baker points to the perks of working from home.

“One of the advantages of us all working at home is there’s plenty of time to figure out what you’re going to do,” Baker says.

“I know what the guitar solo is going to be because I’ve already done it at home and sent it to Michael to tweak it,” he adds.

“It’s not as hard as you think.”

“This album is a collective expression and a lot of the fun is seeing how the hell it is going to turn out,” Baker explains. He says the chops of the other players took his and Hampton‘s early ideas well past what they had expected.

“Diamond Buzz” settles into a hypnotic groove, while the title track puts the band’s D.C. hardcore sound up front, with Lyxzén belting over razor-sharp hooks.

Baker calls Fake Names a “mutual admiration society,” and the band draws on 1970s U.K. punk, classic hardcore energy and guitar-driven power-pop. Its self-titled debut arrived in 2020 with a classic rock lean, followed in 2023 by Expendables, produced by Adam “Atom” Greenspan (Idles, Yeah Yeah Yeahs), who gave the band a cleaner, richer sound.

Fake Names will tour in early 2027. The European run begins January 28, and the U.S. leg opens February 18 in Brooklyn.
