When Goon released their album Dream 3 last summer, at least one great song was left over. The folky, poppy, psych-y Los Angeles band has now found an outlet for that track. “Atrium” will be released next month on a 7″, backed by the previously released “Death Spells.” The music, which has hit the internet…
Held., the new trio featuring Douglas Robinson and Sal Mignano of The Sleeping alongside Josh Eppard of Coheed And Cambria, have dropped “Constant Tension,” the second single from their debut album Grey. The record is set for release May 15 through MNRK Heavy.
The five-minute track follows their first single, “New You Anthem,” which featured Frank Iero and drew early attention. Revolver highlighted its “lightning-strike guitar… and thunderous drums,” while Alternative Press called it “rousing,” and idobi described it as a “dazzling post-hardcore tune.”
Where “New You Anthem” focused on connection and release, “Constant Tension” shifts inward. The song digs into internal conflict, backed by a video directed by Adam Thomson that continues the narrative introduced in the band’s first clip. The visual approach leans into sci-fi territory, matching the themes that run through Grey.
Robinson breaks down the meaning behind the track in detail: “‘Constant Tension’ stems from an everlasting battle within myself to embrace who I am via internal reflection. It’s all of my strengths fighting against all of my weaknesses. There is a ‘constant tension,’ a violent push and pull within my mind every single day. I let myself down so much, to the point where I often feel like I have to somewhat abandon myself and step outside to try and see the bigger picture, but the hurt inside of me pulls me back into my own thoughts. I go completely blank to try and focus, which oddly enough resorts to more tension, and more clouded thoughts. It feels like an endless cycle. The lyrics to ‘Constant Tension’ mirror all of this.”
To mark the release, Held. have scheduled an intimate Grey listening party on Thursday, March 5, at Selva in Brooklyn. The band will be present from 7 to 10 p.m., and no RSVP is required.
On Grey, Held. pull from decades of combined experience in the post-hardcore and alternative scenes. Robinson sees the album as a defining step in his evolution as a writer. “The album as a whole truly feels like it’s everything I have ever wanted to write in my time growing as a musician,” he says. “This record has, in many ways, healed me…. or, it’s at least trying to.”
The album was produced and mixed by Jon Markson — known for his work with Drug Church, Drain, and The Story So Far — and recorded at the Animal Farm in Flemington, New Jersey. With “Constant Tension,” Held. continue to set the tone for a debut built on confrontation, reflection, and weight.
