  • The Portrait of Us is Sharbel Wahbee’s Single Out Now

    Good Day Noir Family,
There is an immediate sense of gravity in “The Portrait of Us” by Sharbel Wahbee, a track that opens with piano and strings moving together in a carefully shaped introduction.

The Portrait of Us is Sharbel Wahbee’s Single Out Now

The atmosphere sets an emotional frame that prepares the listener for something expansive rather than intimate. The song establishes its identity within seconds.

The voice enters with a theatrical tone that feels confident and controlled. The vocal delivery does not rush. It takes its time and allows each phrase to land with clarity. Moreover, the performance carries a cinematic quality that would not feel out of place in a film score. The music seems designed to support imagery, movement, and narrative rather than simple repetition.

The arrangement grows steadily. Each section adds weight without cluttering the structure. The sense of ascent becomes central to the listening experience. The track is like a staircase leading upward, step by step, until the chorus arrives with force. When that moment hits, the use of higher tonal ranges and broad orchestration creates a powerful release.

One of the most effective elements lies in the way dynamics are handled. Wahbee clearly understands when to hold back and when to push forward. Tension and release work together rather than against each other. In addition, the secondary vocals play a vital role. These voices support the main melody and lift it further, adding emotional density without overwhelming the lead.

The cinematic aspect continues throughout the track. Eevery arrangement choice serves the emotional arc of the song. The listener is guided rather than surprised, which strengthens the emotional payoff.

What ultimately stands out is the artist’s command of structure and atmosphere. Wahbee does not rely on complexity for its own sake. Rather, he builds intensity through clarity, repetition, and scale. The song leaves a lasting impression without relying on trends or formulas.

“The Portrait of Us” is intense, elevated, and carefully constructed. It rewards focused listening and reveals an artist who understands how to transform emotion into a broad musical statement.

    Monumental!

Sharbel Wahbee is an independent composer and artist creating cinematic, emotionally driven music that explores human connection, memory, and shared identity.

Blending modern orchestration, ambient textures, and alternative influences, his work focuses less on traditional genre boundaries and more on storytelling through sound.

  • Drown In Ashes is Sonya Rising’s Single Out Now

    Good Day Noir Family,
There is something immediately unsettling about “Drown In Ashes” by Sonya Rising, and that tension becomes the song’s greatest strength.

Drown In Ashes is Sonya Rising’s Single Out Now

The track seems to emerge from a distorted, dystopian space, as if the band is transmitting from another dimension rather than performing in a studio.

Drown In Ashes is Sonya Rising's Single Out Now

Right away, fuzzy guitars create a dense wall of sound, while distant background voices echo from what feels like an underground bunker. Escape is not an option once the song pulls you in.

Sonya Rising show strong control over dynamics. The verses deliberately strip the arrangement back, leaving room for atmosphere and unease to breathe. Then, when the chorus arrives, the song expands again with force and intent. The contrast between restraint and release becomes one of the most effective elements of the composition.

The band clearly draws energy from ’90s influences, yet they refuse to sit comfortably inside nostalgia. Instead, those references act as raw material for a sonic blend that feels personal and forward-looking. The background vocals play a crucial role in shaping the identity of the track. Their almost screaming presence, layered beneath the main vocal line, adds intensity without overpowering the core structure. The song maintains clarity while still feeling aggressive and volatile.

There is also a cinematic quality running through “Drown In Ashes.” At times, the music feels suited for high-stakes action scenes, bringing to mind the harsh landscapes and chaos of films like Mad Max. Still, Sonya Rising never rely on visuals alone. They translate that cinematic tension directly into sound through texture, rhythm, and controlled noise.

As the track moves toward its conclusion, another transformation takes place. The final section leans further into metal territory, increasing weight and urgency. Consequently, the ending feels heavier and more confrontational, closing the song on a note that refuses resolution. That choice reinforces the band’s darker vision and commitment to discomfort.

What stands out most is the band’s refusal to follow trends. Rather than chasing familiarity, Sonya Rising focus on shaping a sinister and cohesive identity. Their vision feels deliberate, raw, and unpolished in the best sense. “Drown In Ashes” is not designed to please casually. Instead, it challenges the listener and rewards attention with depth and intensity. Sonya Rising prove that carving a unique path still matters, especially in heavy music.

    Relentless!

Sonya Rising, hailing from CHELMSFORD, United States, is making waves in the music scene with their original single “Drown In Ashes.” Drawing inspiration from Nu metal and infusing it with hard-hitting melodies and raw emotion, Sonya Rising’s music is a powerful blend that captivates listeners. Influenced by bands like Deftones and Breaking Benjamin, Sonya Rising’s sound is a unique fusion that sets them apart in the industry.

This band is full of talent that spans decades! We asked the 2 founding members to give a little history of the band. This is what they told us, a little window into the history of  Buffalo’s very own- “Sentinel”

Enjoy the following “Tales from Sentinel Band History🎸

    From Nick Notaro:

Ok. So the band was started in 1986 with myself, Jimmy Blahowicz on guitar, Steve Caprio on bass and Rich (Dino) Fortune on vocals. We played a lot of Rock wars at Salty Dog and Sinbad’s. We played one of our biggest shows at Carousel roller rink. Once, when we played at the old Skate Haven which became the Fun house and now Lucarelli’s, we were doing an original instrumental. It was heavy double bass. Unbeknownst to me, the singer jumped on the drum riser the song before and caused the platform to separate. During the song, the front foot of my throne started to fall into the crack. I knew there was a break coming up so I stood up and turned the base. When I sat back down, the back foot went into the crack and caused me to fall backwards off the stage. Some little kid ran up to me yelling ” mister, are you ok?” I jumped back on the stage to see Jimmy and Steve in hysterics.  We finished the song and I got a standing ovation.”

There were several lineup changes over the years which saw me replaced by Jim O’Donnel, Jay McGurrin and Darrin James. I will forward you a message from Jimmy with some stuff from those years. Jimmy eventually went on to some big area bands such as Silk and Steel and Nasty Habits. We had lost touch for over 20 years. But in 2016 I called all the original members to get together at my house and that started the reunion turning. We played the Exposure concerts for several years, each year with a different lineup. Dino found after the first show that his voice could no longer hold up. We went through several singers and lineups. Steve had to leave due to health reasons which brings us to today. The new lineup is 2 years old and ready to rock!

    From Jimmy Blahowicz:

We were playing a place called Pete Piero’s Steak House that actually was more of a bar. The 2nd set we were opening with Sweet Emotion and you know how long the beginning of the song can be. We started the set playing the beginning of the song with no signs of the singer coming on stage. We must have played the beginning of the song for over 10 minutes with the audience starting to look around and making strange looks at the band. The singer finally ran in stage and went right into singing the song. It ends up he was banging one of the waitresses in the back kitchen with her sitting on the counter top. When he started singing the audience erupted cheering. I didn’t know if it was because they really liked the song or just glad he showed up and started singing. lol

We played in a bar that had a front room that I thought was a restaurant and when we finally hit the stage the girls started walking in the bar when we started playing and got up on the bar and tables and started dancing. They started taking off all their clothes and flung some of their bras and panties on stag. When we finished the song I asked my guitar tech what is going on? He said, how didn’t you notice the front of the bar was a strip club? To make it even better the whole side of the building was dirty motel rooms.  We partied there for a while. Lol

We played at Darien Lake and after the show some of the audience had photos of the band that were available. Some gathered on the side of the stage and wanted me to sign it for them. I was thrilled. The last girl that was in line came to me and I put out my hand with a sharpie ready to sign the picture she had in her hand. She smiled and lifted her shirt up with no bra on and said I want you to sign this!!! I was shocked and just signed the area she wanted with my sharpie. We took a picture together like she wanted. I thought jeez, haven’t done that before!!! lol

I was playing a bar in a Buffalo and my roadie called me early the next morning and sounded out of breath. It was strange because we played and got back when the sun was coming up and it was like unlike him. He said, bud I can’t find your guitar!!! It was and remains my prized possession because it was the first “real” guitar my dad bought for me. I bothered him for months to get it for me because I seen an add in Guitar Player magazine and it was my idol Eddie Van Halen advertising hod Kramer guitar. I called the bar and they were closed. He called me up a couple of hours later and said, bud I found it. Oddly enough, I was so glad he found it that I didn’t ask him where it was? Back then our roadies got paid in pizza and beer. Well, he must have got paid well that night. Probably a party pizza and full case of beer!!! lol

The bass play cut his hand badly at work on a meat slicer at work and we had a big show that night. Well, our manager said you have to play the show or else!!! He wound it the best he could with gauze and started the show. About halfway through the show the gauze came off and he stated bleeding all over his bass. The audience went crazy cheering like it was a Gene Simmons trick!!! It wasn’t but the show went on!!!

We played a dive bar called the Ken Lounge and had a big crowd and during the 3rd set they ran out of most liquor. Gladly most of the audience stayed but I felt it odd when we finish that every person that was there was drinking out of a plastic cup with a small straw in it indicating the were all drinking pop!!! Those are real fans

We were playing a rock wars at the Salty Dog when we just started the band. The band was there with most of their gear in stage. I was too young to be at a bar and went with my parents. The bouncer asked me and my parents where my proof was? My mother who never lies said she ruined it in the washer doing laundry. The bouncer smiled and knew what we were up to but let it go. During the show somebody bought us shots and the waitress brought them up to us. I was nervous as I hadn’t been on stage much and didn’t know what to do. Of course I drank the shot thinking mine had ice tea, it wasn’t!!! After it put it down with my face cringing I looked up and seen him the bouncer watching me smiling!!! To this day, I think he bought me the shot.

There was this guy who would follow the band all over the place. He was like a male groupie. I used to wear a white leather fringe sleeve jack, something like you would see Ozzy wear. After one of our shows he told me if I give him my jacket he would give me his motorcycle. I didn’t believe him and said, ya right!!! He showed up to a show the next weekend and said, ya still want the bike? I smiled like he was kidding and said ya sure!!! After the show I was packing up and he dangled the key in front of me. I took them and gave him the jacket. He was there with a couple of friends so he had a ride home. I thought I could leave my car with the equipment inside of it overnight instead of leaving the motorcycle.

Thanks for all of that fun band history guys!!!

  • Irma Thomas’s March 1966 British tour

In early March 1966, American soul singer Irma Thomas arrived in England to participate in a nationwide tour organised by Roy Tempest who hired Nottingham band, The Sons of Adam, to back her.

In some of the adverts, the group appears to be listed as The Excitements (or Exciters) unless this was another band that played on some of the tour dates?

The Sons of Adam line-up for the tour was Paddy Flynn (lead guitar), Harry Hopewell (bass), Barry Heald (tenor sax), John Sanderson (tenor sax) and Mick Franks aka Mick Maltby (drums).

The dates below (and band line-up) are listed on the Dungeon Mods website (https://dungeonmods.wordpress.com/2020/04/16/life-of-a-local-band/) and from advertised sources. After this tour with Irma Thomas, The Sons of Adam backed Screaming Jay Hawkins on a handful of gigs.

4 March 1966 – New All-Star Club, Artillery Passage, Bishopsgate, east London (Melody Maker) Doubtful this happened even though it was advertised

Morning and afternoon rehearsals took place at the Roebuck on Tottenham Court Road. Apparently, The Sons of Adam had to wait until Stevie Wonder had finished rehearsing before starting tour preparations with Irma Thomas and were introduced to him by Thomas. Evening rehearsals took place at the Titanine Sports & Social Club in Colindale.

11 March 1966 – Marquee, Wardour Street, Soho, central London with The Roscoe Brown Combo (https://dungeonmods.wordpress.com/2020/04/16/life-of-a-local-band/)

11 March 1966 – Club West Indies, Stonebridge Park, Harlesden, northwest London (Melody Maker)

11 March 1966 – Cue Club all-nighter, Paddington, west London with The Jet Set (Melody Maker)

12 March 1966 – Dungeon, Nottingham (Nottingham Evening Post)

13 March 1966 – Gainsborough Club, Salford, Greater Manchester and the Riverboat Club, Manchester (https://dungeonmods.wordpress.com/2020/04/16/life-of-a-local-band/)

14 March 1966 – 1pm recording for Scene at 6.30 for Granada TV in Manchester (https://dungeonmods.wordpress.com/2020/04/16/life-of-a-local-band/)

14 March 1966 – The Penthouse, Birmingham with The Fabulous Creseendoes (Birmingham Evening Mail/Concert ticket)

17 March 1966 – Irma Thomas and the band did a sound balance for ITV’s Ready Steady Go at 12.30pm (https://dungeonmods.wordpress.com/2020/04/16/life-of-a-local-band/)

17 March 1966 – Whisky A Go Go, Wardour Street, Soho, central London with The Excitements (Melody Maker). In the early hours Irma Thomas and The Sons of Adam played the Scotch of St James in Mayfair on an all-nighter.

18 March 1966 – ITV’s Ready Steady Go at 12.30pm and Flamingo, Wardour Street, Soho, central London with Ralph Denyer’s Rockhouse Band at 7pm (Melody Maker) From midnight Irma Thomas and The Sons of Adam played the El Partido in Lewisham, southeast London on an all-nighter.

19 March 1966 – Twisted Wheel, Manchester (Manchester Evening News & Chronicle)

19 March 1966 – Twisted Wheel, Manchester (late session) with Wilson Pickett (Manchester Evening News & Chronicle)

20 March 1966 – Roaring ‘20s, Carnaby Street, Soho, central London with The Powerhouse Six, The Excitements and Duke Lee (Melody Maker/Poster)

23 March 1966 – Catacombe Club, Eastbourne, East Sussex (Melody Maker)

24 March 1966 – The Rialto, Derby with The Sidewinders and The Tommy Owen Quintet (Derby Evening Telegraph) This was reviewed in the press

24 March 1966 – The Penthouse, Birmingham (Birmingham Evening Mail)

25 March 1966 – Canterbury Union Ball, Eliot College, Kent University, Canterbury, Kent with Manfred Mann and full supporting groups (InCant /Melody Maker/Poster)

25 March 1966 – New All-Star Club, Artillery Passage, Bishopsgate, east London (Melody Maker)

26 March 1966 – Caribbean All Star Club, Sheffield, South Yorkshire with The Excitements (Sheffield Star) The Sons of Adam gigs also list a second show at the King Mojo in Sheffield.

27 March 1966 – Flamingo, Wardour Street, Soho, central London with The Chessmen (Melody Maker)

In an interview for The Guardian from May 2025 (https://www.theguardian.com/music/2025/may/26/irma-thomas-galactic-soul-queen-new-orleans), Thomas talked about how badly organised the tour was and explained how she lost 15lbs and her voice for three months.

“I had no one looking after things for me and found myself singing night after night – and some matinees – for around three weeks,” she recalled.

“I had a very basic British backing band and went everywhere in an old van. It was exhausting and debilitating. I was told by a voice doctor that if I ever wanted to sing again, I couldn’t speak for three months. So, I didn’t. Which was really difficult, especially when you have small children.”

27 June 1966 – Whisky A Go Go, Wardour Street, Soho, central London (Melody Maker) Although this was advertised, it is probably a printing error and was actually Rufus Thomas who was touring Britain at the time.

If you can add anything, please leave a comment below. We would particularly like to hear about the songs performed and any other standouts.

  • Gene Champagne – "I Can’t Pretend"

You know I always love a good cover song, so I’m more than happy to welcome Gene Champagne’s new single on Rum Bar Records. It’s a splendidly executed rendition of The Barracudas’ 1981 classic “I Can’t Pretend,” a song which certainly rates as one of the greatest pure pop songs ever written. While Gene Champagne is well know as an ace drummer (The Killjoys, Teenage Head, Brad Marino, etc.), he has also shown a great knack for power pop/punk songwriting and singing with The Un-Teens and as a solo artist. And here puts his signature on an iconic tune. There is a really great history of covers of “I Can’t Pretend.” Teenage Head did a great version in the mid-’80s. Most people my age remember The Riverdales’ cover from 1995. Then The Yum Yums recorded it in 1998. That’s quite a formidable list of bands, and Gene Champagne fits right in. He takes on this song fully solo — producing, singing, and playing all the instruments. Like all the others that covered the song before him, he has the good sense to not mess around much with a perfect song. Anytime anyone covers this song, it inevitably compels a few people to seek out the album Drop Out with The Barracudas. Surely that’s going to happen again, and so we thank Mr. Champagne for being the latest to spread the gospel. If you’re a fan of his and are wondering if you might hear some more original songs from him this year, the Magic 8 Ball says, “Signs points to yes!”
