Artist To Watch: sadie
In 2022, New York-born Anna Schwab released ā4am,ā her first song under the moniker sadie. It’s a sleek, low-key bedroom-pop sprawl with a subtle trap beat and Schwabās gently Auto-Tuned vocals singing about driving around with the windows down, talking to someone about mutual loneliness. It feels casual and cosmic at the same time, and the combination is addictive.

Kacey Musgraves Brings Out Miranda Lambert For āHorses And Divorcesā At Gruen Hall
It’s the country equivalent of the first time that Jay-Z and Nas performed “Black Republican” together. For a solid decade, Texan country greats Kacey Musgraves and Miranda Lambert were at odds with one another. Musgraves co-wrote the absolute banger “Mama’s Broken Heart,” and she wanted to keep it for herself. Instead, Lambert recorded that song and had a hit with it in 2013. That doesn’t sound like start of a bitter blood feud, but those two evidently did not like one another. Their personal issues only just ended, when the two of them came together to write and record the duet “Horses And Divorces,” from Musgraves’ triumphant new album Middle Of Nowhere.

What is the Gothic Aesthetic? A Visual Guide to the Culture
What is the Gothic Aesthetic? A Visual Guide to the Subculture
The term “Gothic” conjures images of shadows, lace, and ancient stone. But beneath the surface lies a rich, complex history that connects architecture, literature, and modern music. Here is your definitive guide to understanding the Gothic aesthetic.
Defining the Gothic: More Than Just Black
At its core, the Gothic aesthetic is not merely a color palette; it is a philosophy. It is an appreciation of the sublime, the melancholic, and the beauty found in things that are decaying or forgotten. Whether it is in the pages of a 19th-century novel or the sharp riffs of a noir rock song, the Gothic seeks to find light within the darkness.
Architectural Roots: From Cathedrals to Modern Noir
The visual language of Goth began in the 12th century with soaring cathedrals, pointed arches, and intricate stained glass. This obsession with verticality and awe-inspiring architecture set the stage for how we perceive the “Gothic” today.
Modern interpretations have evolved, but the DNA remains. We see it today in industrial cityscapes, shadows cast by urban streetlights, and the “noir” aesthetic that prioritizes high contrastāthe interplay of blinding light and absolute shadow.
The Cultural Lexicon: Literature, Music, and Style
The Goth subculture is a tapestry woven from multiple creative threads:
- Literature: From the brooding works of Edgar Allan Poe to the psychological depth of modern thrillers, Gothic literature remains the heartbeat of the culture.
- Music: From the early post-punk days to the modern noir rock scene, music provides the soundtrack to the aesthetic. It is about atmosphere, rhythm, and emotional intensity.
- Fashion: It is a language of identityāvelvet, leather, lace, and silverāused to express an internal world that finds comfort in the night.
Embracing the Modern Gothic
The Gothic aesthetic today is inclusive and expansive. It is for those who look at the world and see the poetry in the shadows. It is about creating your own atmosphere, whether through the art you hang on your walls, the clothes you choose to wear, or the music that drives your day.
Listen to Edgar Allan Poets, The Noir Rock Band, inspired by Poe
The beauty of the Gothic is that it never stays still. It evolves with every generation that embraces its mysteries.

The shadow is not the absence of light; it is the presence of depth.
