  • Premiere: Ghalia Volt – “Burn the House Down”

In a Blues Rock Review exclusive premiere, listen to Ghalia Volt’s new single “Burn the House Down,” the title track from her upcoming album due out May 15 via Ruf Records.

The new song captures Ghalia Volt’s fearless blend of blues, rock and roots influences, pairing gritty grooves with a deeply personal lyrical core. Anchored by a swampy rhythm and pulsing energy, “Burn the House Down” offers another glimpse into an artist who continues to push beyond traditional boundaries.

“In this song, I hold onto every photograph, every memory, the lyrics sweat nostalgia while the music pulses like a heartbeat, swampy and greasy tracing my flamenco roots into my very own sound.”

Burn the House Down is Ghalia Volt’s sixth studio album and was recorded in Nashville with producer JD Simo. Across 11 songs, the album explores the full spectrum of her influences, from the John Lee Hooker-inspired swagger of “Lucifer’s Grip” to the juke joint grooves of “Let Yo’ Hair Down,” the Hill Country blues of “Where Do We Go,” and the late-night rock and roll feel of “Mine.”

Tracked live in the studio over two days, the album was recorded with a tight-knit band featuring drummer Chris Powell, bassist Brian Allen, and Simo on guitar. The sessions embraced spontaneity, with amps bleeding into one another and performances captured in the moment.

“Being true is always what resonates with me,” says Ghalia. “Often, bands make music for the fans or to fit into a certain genre. I believe that if you make art for yourself, if it feels right, if you feel good doing it then it will translate. People will appreciate it more because it’s real. It’s you.”

She also praised Simo’s approach behind the board.

“I love to compare JD to a photographer,” she explains. “He captures a moment, an energy, and all those action shots translate into a record. We only did a few takes of each song. It’s raw, it’s real, it’s simple. It’s all about spontaneity and feel.”

With “Burn the House Down,” Ghalia Volt delivers a track that feels both intimate and electrifying, rooted in memory while charging forward with undeniable spirit.

The rise of Mumford & Sons out of London, England, came from a tight-knit group of musicians who built their sound around acoustic instruments and emotionally direct songwriting. Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall, and Ted Dwane formed the band in the mid-2000s, developing their identity on the London folk circuit before breaking through globally. Their debut album, Sigh No More, released in 2009 and produced by Markus Dravs, introduced a banjo-driven sound that quickly separated them from the mainstream. Songs like “Little Lion Man,” “The Cave,” and “Winter Winds” connected immediately, with “The Cave” reaching number one on the

The B-side to “No Gods” is a high-voltage cover of Blur’s 1997 hit, “Song 2.” Monk’s take on this classic track aggressively elevates it to the next level while still being respectful to the source. If you liked Monk’s previous release, “Dark Side of the Mind,” “No Gods” is the perfect coda to a hardcore record done right.
