    THE VINCENT JAMES EXPLOSION

The Vincent James Explosion – VJXIV CD Review

Left to right Vince, Jim and Jerry

The Vincent James Explosion is comprised of three of the most talented and versatile musicians currently performing on the Buffalo, NY music scene. The current members of VJX are Vincent James Mastrantonio: (Guitar) guitar teacher, producer, composer and entrepreneur, Jim Linsner: (Drums) published author and drum teacher and Jerry Sampson: (Bass), Jerry has won several Buffalo Music Awards for his outstanding bass playing. All three members of VJX are in several other high profile bands and they all are in demand as fill-in players.

VJXIV is the fourth release from The Vincent James Explosion and it is the best to date from the band. The Vincent James Explosion plays jazz/fusion, instrumental music.
The music also contains elements of funk, rock and avant-garde jazz. All of the performances on VJXIV are outstanding. The guitar playing is innovative and highlights Vince’s versatility on his instrument of choice. VJXIV also contains Vincent James singing debut on “Madness”.

VJXIV starts off with “Fanfare for a New Man”. This track sounds like a celebration of music and sound.  The solo guitar and keyboards sound huge and powerful. I can hear this song opening or closing out a movie. This song would also work well opening a major sporting event. I can also hear it playing when a team first arrives at the big game. Great opening track.

“Trial Exhibits” is a prime example of VJX doing what they do best. Rocking out on a jazz/fusion, guitar based groove. The unique sound of the opening rhythm guitar chords immediately caught my ear. The song breaks down into a bass groove which brings in the sharp and blazing guitar solo. The sound of the solo guitar is reminiscent of Joe Satriani/Steve Vai at times and Vince throws in some sweeping guitar techniques for good measure.

“Kinky B” features a couple of effects-driven and passionately played guitar tracks. The song starts with a jazzy sounding, chord riff but then a dissonant, distorted guitar chimes in and adds a completely different element to the song. The chords continue the dissonant sound of the track. Vince plays an absolutely blazing solo which leads into an off meter turn for the band. This song could be called a avant-garde, jazz/rock fusion all out jam. Vince at his best! One of my faves on VJXIV.

Next up is Vince’s lead vocal debut on “Madness”. I’ve heard this song develop over the years and this is the best version I’ve heard to date. “Madness” lyrics describe city violence and the end result which is pain and death. This song is a balls out rocker and once again Vince rips his way through an outstanding rock guitar solo. “Madness” is one of the best songs on VJXIV.

In stark contrast to “Madness”,  “Jimmy Mack” is a brief jazz/fusion track, with more emphasis on jazz than fusion. Clean jazz guitar accompanies a a single note melody which sounds like it could be a sonically effected, bended guitar or keyboard note. Cool soundz!

“The Truth” features jazzy guitar and blazing rock guitar solos but bassist Jerry Sampson gets a turn showing some solid and melodic chops on a 70 second solo during this track.

“Deep Blue” features Vince playing some great, bluesy acoustic guitar. Unaccompanied except for a rather spacy sounding backing track Vince displays his exceptional technique on the acoustic guitar.

The 7th song, “Carina” is “dedicated to my Carina” as Vince so eloquently says in the liner notes. Jim Runfola blows some killer soprano sax on this great instrumental.

The last song is VJX’s take on the classic “Mission Impossible”. The entire band tears it up and once again, Vince blazes through a melodic and polished guitar solo.

CD Review by Joey Tell (Joseph Militello)

Here’s a recent picture of Vincent James from the Buffalo News performing with Caitlin Koch and the Jamie Moses band.

    Thank you Vince and Carina!!

  • Lost Society Announces New Album, Releases first single.

    Edited by Anselm Anderson

Finland’s  Rising Nu-Metal stars LOST SOCIETY have announced their brand-new album Hell Is A State Of Mind, set for release on March 6th, 2026, via Nuclear Blast Records. Four years after the critically acclaimed If the Sky Came Down, the band returns with their most unapologetic album to date

For vocalist and guitarist Samy Elbanna, guitarist Arttu Lesonen, bassist Mirko Lehtinen, and drummer Tapani Fagerström, Hell Is A State Of Mind represents a bold step into the metallic territory they were always destined to claim. The music is unrestrained, unmistakable, and unapologetically their own.

Reuniting with their trusted collaborator Joonas Parkkonen, who serves as producer, co-writer, and mixing engineer, the album took a decisive turn when the track “Blood Diamond” reshaped their creative direction. What started as a simple melody evolved into a cinematic, string-driven masterpiece.

The album’s first official single, “Blood Diamond,” follows last spring’s early preview, “Dead People Scare Me (But the Living Make Me Sick).” It arrives with a raw, high-energy video that showcases Lost Society’s untamed stage presence. From the very first notes, *Hell Is A State Of Mind* makes it clear that Lost Society is at their most confident, confrontational, and uncompromising.

I loved every moment of writing this album and especially preparing the story that I’m singing to you all – soon it will all be yours.

  • Latest JUDAS PRIEST Documentary “The Ballad of Judas Priest” Will Have Its World Premiere At The Berlin International Film Festival

The Ballad Of Judas Priest, a new documentary centered on the Grammy-winning English heavy metal pioneers Judas Priest, is set to make its world premiere at the 76th Berlinale – Berlin International Film Festival, which runs from February 12 through February 22.

The Berlinale has long been recognized as a major destination for both artistic discovery and wide-reaching entertainment. It stands among the largest public film festivals in the world, drawing tens of thousands of attendees from across the globe each year. For professionals in the film industry and international media, the eleven-day event each February also serves as a key annual meeting point and an essential marketplace.

Since its founding in 1951, the Berlin International Film Festival has carried a distinctive cultural weight. Created during the early years of the Cold War as a “showcase of the free world,” the event was shaped by post-war realities and the experience of a divided city. Over time, the Berlinale evolved into a hub for intercultural dialogue and a platform for films that engage directly with social and political themes. It continues to be regarded as the most politically engaged of the world’s major film festivals.

The documentary is co-directed by filmmaker Sam Dunn alongside Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello, marking Morello’s first project as a director. The film explores Judas Priest’s influence on music and culture, emphasizing that their reach extends well beyond heavy metal. Featuring landmark songs such as “Breaking The Law” and “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’”, The Ballad Of Judas Priest focuses on the drive, perseverance, and long-term impact of a band whose story has resonated with fans for decades.

Dunn shared his excitement about the premiere, saying: “Super proud to announce that our Judas Priest doc The Ballad Of Judas Priest will premiere at Berlinale – Berlin International Film Festival this February. Beyond excited for all our German metalheads to get the first look.”

Emerging from working-class beginnings in Birmingham, England, Judas Priest rose to become one of the most influential forces in rock music. Often credited as key architects of the heavy metal sound during the 1970s, the band has sold more than 50 million records worldwide and released 19 studio albums. Their achievements were formally recognized in 2022 with induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. In 2024, they released Invincible Shield, becoming the first heavy metal band to issue studio albums spaced 50 years apart. That release earned widespread praise and received a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance. Later this year, the group will also embark on a co-headlining North American tour alongside Alice Cooper, covering 22 cities.

Reflecting on the project, Judas Priest stated: “We have lived and breathed metal for over five decades, and finally in this documentary we are summoning our congregation to officially witness our lives uncensored, in a never-before-seen way…the cassock comes off, revealing Priest in all its metal glory!”

Morello and Dunn also commented on the broader scope of the film, saying: “While some may know Judas Priest for their huge hits that have shaped the heavy metal genre, there is so much more to their story. Tracing their incredible 50-year journey, this film will capture how Judas Priest both defined the sound and look of metal, but also made it a more inclusive place along the way. We are grateful to the band for allowing us such intimate, unfiltered access to their lives and look forward to bringing this film to the metal masses around the world.”

The Ballad Of Judas Priest is produced by Banger Films and directed by Sam Dunn and Tom Morello. Producers include Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn, with executive producers Tom Morello, Rick Krim, Sheila Stepanek, and Jayne Andrews. Additional executive producers include Tom Mackay, Krista Wegener, and Abby Davis for Sony Music Vision, along with Sylvia Rhone for Epic Records. The documentary is presented and distributed by Sony Music Vision.

  • EXHORDER To Launch U.S. Headlining “Unforeseen Circumstances” Tour Later This Month

New Orleans thrash metal veterans EXHORDER have announced a U.S. headlining run set to kick off later this month. The “Unforeseen Circumstances Tour 2026” winter trek launches January 29 in Lafayette, Louisiana and runs through February 22 in Hobart, Indiana. Support on select dates will come from LUICIDALRINGWORMPHOBIA, and SLOWHOLE.

Commenting on the upcoming tour, vocalist Kyle Thomas said: “It’s about that time, y’all! 2026 is here, and we are back to work. Joining us will be the legends that are Luicidal, Ringworm, and Phobia! Up and comers Slowhole will also be on this tour for the entire run, and you do not want to miss them. Luicidal and Ringworm will be on select dates, so consider accordingly when you obtain your tickets. As always, we will be performing a little something from all four albums, so come on out and say hello!”

EXHORDER have also shared a live video of “The Tale Of Unsound Minds,” captured by Mike Holderbeast at the Fillmore in New Orleans last April, showcasing the band’s still-ferocious live attack in support of their latest album, Defectum Omnium.

Forged in 1986, EXHORDER’s career has been as influential as it has been turbulent. After a 27-year hiatus following their final Roadrunner Records release in 1992, the band returned in 2019 with Mourn The Southern Skies, widely hailed as one of metal’s strongest comeback albums. Despite lineup changes and setbacks caused by the pandemic, EXHORDER pushed forward and released Defectum Omnium in 2024. Produced by the band and mixed by Jens Bogren, the album marked a renewed focus on the savage roots that first defined EXHORDER’s sound.

At the time of the album’s release, BLABBERMOUTH.NET praised the record, writing that EXHORDER “still have the power to make metal folk disregard their own safety,” adding that Defectum Omnium “spits, it snarls, it has more killer riffs than seems strictly necessary.” Other outlets echoed the sentiment, cementing the album as one of the band’s strongest statements to date.

  • JOHN CORABI Will Be Supporting CINDERELLA’s TOM KEIFER BAND On Certain Dates

Veteran rock vocalist John Corabi, widely recognized for his commanding voice and long résumé with bands such as Mötley Crüe, The Dead Daisies, Union, and The Scream, is set to join Tom Keifer of Cinderella for select dates throughout the spring and summer touring season. Tickets for most of the scheduled shows are expected to go on sale this Friday, January 16.

Corabi recently marked a new chapter in his career by performing his first show under the “John Corabi & Friends” banner on December 30, 2025, at Basement East in Nashville, Tennessee. For that performance, he handled vocals and guitar, backed by an experienced lineup that included Michael Devin of The Dead Daisies and Whitesnake on bass and vocals, Paul Taylor from Winger on keyboards, guitar, and vocals, Jeremy Asbrock of Ace Frehley on guitar and vocals, Troy Luccketta of Tesla on drums, and Marti Frederiksen, known for his work with Steven Tyler, on guitar and vocals.

As previously reported, Corabi will release his debut full-length solo album, New Day, on April 24, 2026, through Frontiers Music Srl.

New Day represents his first complete solo album made up entirely of original material. The record was tracked in Nashville during the summer of 2025 and produced by multi-platinum songwriter and producer Marti Frederiksen, whose credits include work with Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, and Buckcherry. Musically, the album blends classic 1970s rock, soul, and blues influences into a sound that feels grounded and personal rather than nostalgic.

Beyond being a simple solo release, New Day functions as Corabi’s own statement on the lasting power of rock music. The album focuses on melody, feel, and honesty, with performances that emphasize commitment and authenticity from start to finish.

  • LAMB OF GOD Announce New Album Into Oblivion, Drop Title Track And Video

LAMB OF GOD Announce New Album Into Oblivion, Drop Title Track And Video

Richmond, Virginia metal heavyweights LAMB OF GOD have announced the release of their tenth studio album, Into Oblivion, due out March 13 via Epic Records. The record marks the band’s first full-length release in four years and finds the longtime metal titans embracing their status as veterans with nothing left to prove.

To coincide with the announcement, LAMB OF GOD have unveiled the album’s punishing title track, “Into Oblivion,” along with an official music video directed by Tom Flynn and Mike Watts. The song delivers the band’s trademark groove-driven aggression, paired with psychologically charged and socially reflective lyrics that continue vocalist Randy Blythe’s uncompromising approach.

Speaking about the creative mindset behind the album, guitarist Mark Morton said the band felt free from outside pressure while writing the material. “For me, the album is about having the space to breathe creatively and not feeling like we have to keep up with any trend or expectation,” Morton explained. “It feels nice to be untethered from any agenda beyond rallying around the notion of, ‘Let’s just make music that we think is cool,’ which is really where it all started.”

Blythe was more blunt when discussing the album’s title and themes. “Because that’s where we’re heading,” he said of Into Oblivion. “In general, the album is about the ongoing and rapid breakdown of the social contract, particularly here in America. Things are acceptable now that would’ve horrified people just 20 years ago.”

In the lead-up to today’s announcement, LAMB OF GOD released two new tracks that previewed the album’s scope. “Sepsis,” the band’s first new song since 2022, paid tribute to the early ’90s Richmond underground scene that helped shape their sound. Consequence praised the track’s slower, crushing pace, noting that Morton’s riffs were “bruising,” while comparing Blythe’s vocal delivery to “a heavy metal Nick Cave.” The follow-up single, “Parasocial Christ,” leaned into classic LAMB OF GOD territory, earning Revolver’s description as an “anti-tech thrasher.”

Into Oblivion was produced and mixed by longtime collaborator Josh Wilbur and recorded across several locations tied closely to the band’s history. Drums were tracked in Richmond, Virginia, guitars and bass were recorded at Morton’s home studio, and Blythe laid down his vocals at the legendary Total Access Studio in Redondo Beach, California — known for classic recordings by BLACK FLAG, HÜSKER DÜ, and DESCENDENTS.

Album pre-orders are available now, including multiple limited-edition vinyl variants and signed copies. An unannounced first pressing was quietly posted on the band’s website earlier this week and sold out immediately.

Pennsylvania metal merchants THE LAST TEN SECONDS OF LIFE will release their eighth full-length, The Dead Ones, on April 17th!

Intense and intensely personal, The Dead Ones marks the THE LAST TEN SECONDS OF LIFE‘s Metal Blade Records debut. For the ten original tracks of pulverizing deathcore produced by Carson Slovak and Grant McFarland of Pennsylvania’s Atrium Audio, the band focused on the guitar, bass, and drum tones as well as the mix/master to achieve what guitarist Wyatt McLaughlin calls, “a super-thick sonic output and ‘rolling-tank’-like feel.”

Four stellar guests are featured on the album – “Make It To Heaven” includes David Simonich of Signs Of The Swarm, Nate Johnson (ex-Fit For An Autopsy) appears on “Rat Trap,” “Dollar To A Dime” has Alan Grnja of Distant, and “XXXXXXXXXX” features original THE LAST TEN SECONDS OF LIFE vocalist Storm Strope.

In creating The Dead Ones, “everyone took what we learned from the past two releases and assembled what we thought would bring out the best of us,” reflects McLaughlin. “We examined all of THE LAST TEN SECONDS OF LIFE’s past work as well focused on how our fanbase digested and connected with our music. Focusing from the flow of structure all the way to every single word that was used. We have delivered a ten-song thriller that will bellow out through the ages.”

The Dead Ones was recorded with a six-string baritone Viper from ESP-LTD tuned to Drop F, the same tuning used on the band’s 2012 Warpath EP. To elevate the intensity, the band also used an Earthquaker Devices Sunn O))) and Keeley Octa Psi drop tune pedal on certain sections.

Lyrically, The Dead Ones follows 2024′s acclaimed No Name Graves full-length in the theme of death and rebirth, but in contrast, is directly focused on the human experience and the band members’ own struggles. Title track and first single, “The Dead Ones,” is specifically about how the actions of humanity can take an individual’s actual innate humanity away. McLaughlin elaborates, “We all know that feeling. The piercing desire to be able to have one more conversation or final words with a loved one who has passed. ‘The Dead Ones’ explores this in an illuminated way through the delivery of a sonic séance, where the realization that in becoming a vessel for the dead, darkness and light both demand their due.”
