Phantasmal Scourge is the latest offering spawned from a long-running partnership with Delaware’s Rotted Life Records. Guitarist Joe Arida has
spoken of the band’s desire to keep their scandalous/stifling death-doom hybrid sufficiently gross and dumb. Mission accomplished! Night Hag’s rumbling, blurry slo-mo death metal finds its most lethal expression thus far in the warped, haywire blasting at the beginning of “Drowned in Death,” a miserable monolith of savage bass-heavy dissolution. “Effluvia Tendrils” is a demented crawl through a forest of woe that accelerates into a thick East Coast hardcore beatdown. Recommended for those that like ugly things.

JANVS — Fatum est |

With 12 years since their last album,
Nigredo (which was released six years after the previous album,
Vega), melodic black metal act JANVS make it clear that time is key to their writing. Lead single “Filo d’Arianna” is a heartwrenching epic: told in only four minutes but so colossal that it displays years of change. The song starts with a soft melody that yanks the tears from their ducts and throws itself into battle. Each tempo change, from the furious 1000-mile per hour pace to the breakdown which collapses the country, returns back to the melodic refrain. Each iteration is slightly different, modified enough to conjure a more intense reaction. 12 years later, JANVS return to the same structures, but beneath, we feel the transformation.

Lugubrious Garment — In the Wide Vale of Uncreated Night |

Compared to his other projects, Vertebrae Atlantis, Cosmic Putrefaction, and Hadit, whose music takes the form of Biblically-accurate angels, Gabriele Gramaglia’s Lubugrious Garment is an intentional de-stressor. Describing it as streamlined and simplified extreme metal comes with the caveat that this is in relation to Gramaglia’s more celebrated works. For instance, a swaggering riff appears early in “Profaned Fountain of Leaden Waters,” one so tantalizing that it’d definitely be excluded on any other Gramaglia release.
In the Wide Vale of Uncreated Night presents everything clearly, albeit in a mass of limbs and gurgles.

All That Glimmers is Gloam adds industrial elements to the fold as both percussive actors and otherworldly atmospheric signposts. Besides that, this is business as usual for the Pennsylvania duo–psychedelic blackened death metal with meaty riffs and impractical song structures.

Nychta Psychis would likely pass over most people if not for the name attached to Urarv: Aldrahn of Thorns, Dødheimsgard, and Zyklon-B. Urarv sound as if they’ve long discarded what black metal should be while retaining their love for the genre. So,
Nychta Psychis feels both like an affront to the scene that birthed Aldrahn and a fascinating reinterpretation of it.
