Burton C. Bell and The Void will head to Canada this December for a special four-show warm-up run, setting the stage for a busy 2027 and bringing Bell’s next creative chapter to Canadian audiences.

As the founding vocalist and lyricist of Fear Factory, Bell was the band’s only consistent member for more than 30 years. His unmistakable voice, lyrics and creative vision helped define a catalog that became highly influential in industrial and modern metal.

For the past two years, Bell has focused on building what comes next, bringing together a new group of musicians and creating Burton C. Bell and The Void. Heavy, groovy, dark and moody, the project brings his signature vocal presence into a new creative space, with its own identity and a vision firmly focused on the future.

The December performances offer fans an opportunity to experience this new chapter live as Burton C. Bell and The Void build momentum heading into 2027.

Deafheaven has dropped a new EP with no advance notice. At Work In The Fields Of The Bomb is streaming everywhere as of Friday, and vinyl variants are on sale in the band’s store.

The three-song release was recorded with producer Arthur Rizk. It opens with “Hunter,” which comes with a short film made by Deafheaven vocalist George Clarke, director Nico Poalillo of Pulse Films and Academy Award-winning cinematographer Janusz Kaminski.

The title and core idea come from Robert Del Tredici‘s photo book At Work In The Fields Of The Bomb, which documents the everyday places and workers behind the making of nuclear weapons. The EP leans into the uneasy gap between world-ending consequences and the routine tasks that make them possible. It looks at the decisions and systems that steer people toward a point of no return, and at how disaster can grow out of ordinary details. Once extinction is on the table, nobody is left to see it.

The EP follows Lonely People With Power, the band’s 2025 album and its Roadrunner Records debut. That record landed on year-end best-of lists at Rolling Stone, The Ringer, Stereogum, Consequence, Paste, Revolver, Decibel, Flood, The Needle Drop and others, and it spawned the singles “Magnolia,” “Heathen” and “Winona.”

Deafheaven is currently on a U.S. run with Mastodon, with a show at the Fox Theatre in Oakland, Calif., on Friday night. The fall leg wraps Oct. 24 at the Fort Worth, Texas, edition of Sick New World. For a complete list of dates and to purchase tickets, check here.

The band formed in San Francisco and is made up of Clarke, guitarists Kerry McCoy and Shiv Mehra, bassist Christopher Johnson and drummer Daniel Tracy. Deafheaven broke through with 2013’s Sunbather, which pushed the boundaries of heavy music and earned a place on Rolling Stone‘s list of the 100 greatest metal albums of all time and Pitchfork‘s list of the best albums of the 2010s. The band kept bending genre rules on 2015’s New Bermuda. The 2018 LP Ordinary Corrupt Human Love brought a first Grammy nomination, in the Best Metal Performance category. The 2021 album Infinite Granite pushed further into lush textures and softer melodies. The band’s live show has a reputation of its own, and Deafheaven has played festivals such as Coachella and Primavera Sound. It has also shared stages with acts ranging from Slipknot and Knocked Loose to Chelsea Wolfe and Mono.

Every Mastodon record has Mastodon on it, but the new pressing of Marrow Deep has mastodon in it. The Atlanta metal legends have announced a new version of their latest album featuring actual mastodon fossils. The records, which will be limited of 170 copies, were pressed at Waxworks Records with help from the University of Georgia’s geology department, using “bone dust” created by grinding down a bag of fossilized mastodon teeth the band received as a gift more than two decades ago.

Davey Rimmer is picking up a second iconic bass job without giving up the first. The bassist has been confirmed as the replacement for Ian Hill in Judas Priest, and he will keep playing with Uriah Heep as well.

Uriah Heep responded to the news on Friday with a social media statement, saying: “Following today’s announcement that Davey Rimmer will be joining Judas Priest from the start of their 2027 touring, we would all like to wish Davey our very best in this very coveted position in one of the giants of heavy metal and hard rock.

“Davey will continue to play with Uriah Heep in 2026 and on all shows in 2027 where schedules permit. For the shows that don’t, we will be announcing a replacement in due course.”

Hill announced his retirement from Judas Priest on Friday morning, effective immediately. The 74-year-old pointed to “advanced” arthritis as the reason. He said he was still able to handle his bass parts on the songs for the band’s upcoming album, but “there were questions whether I’d be able to complete the recent European tour without incident.”

Hill said he “decided to retire and spend the remaining years doing things with [my family] before it involves one of ’em pushing me around in a wheelchair.”

The bassist had no doubts about his successor, calling Rimmer “the obvious choice for my replacement,” and describing him as “a great bassist, and a genuinely nice bloke who’ll fit the job perfectly, and I wish him the very best of luck!”

Rimmer has already gotten a taste of the job. He filled in for Hill at the Sept. 21 Judas Priest show at the Eventim Apollo in London after Hill hurt his arm, an injury described at the time as “a badly damaged tendon in his left arm.”

A Liverpool native, Rimmer picked up the bass at 11 and learned his craft by playing along to vinyl from the likes of Queen, Uriah Heep, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. He moved to London in the 1990s and dug into the local rock scene. That led to touring and two albums with Zodiac Mindwarp & The Love Reaction: Rock Savage (2005, Cosmodelic Records) and We Are Volsung (2010, SPV/Steamhammer). His bass heroes are a very British bunch, including John Entwistle, John Deacon, Trevor Bolder, Bob Daisley and Neil Murray.

In the early 2000s, Rimmer was a regular in Metalworks, a Camden Town covers band whose lineup included Richie Faulkner of Judas Priest and former Judas Priest drummer Les Binks, plus assorted guests. He joined Uriah Heep in 2013, first covering for an ill Bolder. After Bolder passed away, Rimmer took the job full time and played on Outsider (2014) and the albums that followed, including Living The Dream (2018) and Chaos & Colour (2023). His run with the band has become one of its longest stretches without a lineup change. In 2022, he teamed up with Faulkner, Ronnie Romero and others in Elegant Weapons.

Hill was the last original member standing in Judas Priest, which formed in 1969. Singer Rob Halford came aboard in 1973, followed by guitarist Glenn Tipton in 1974. Halford left in the early 1990s to front his own band and returned in 2003. Founding guitarist K.K. Downing exited in 2011, and Faulkner took his spot.
