  • “Formidable songwriter, entry-level strummer. Bit of a dick.” Ian McNabb tells a Noel Gallagher story Noel Gallagher won’t want you to hear

    In July 1994, Ian McNabb, leader of Liverpudlian alt.rockers the Icicle Works, released his second solo album, Head Like a Rock. Recorded in Los Angeles with serial Neil Young collaborators Crazy Horse, the album was well-received and was nominated for that year’s Mercury Prize.

    To mark the album’s release, McNabb and Crazy Horse played at that year’s Glastonbury Festival, with a pair of warm-up shows scheduled at Manchester Academy and at King’s College London Student Union.

    At the latter show, Noel Gallagher joined the band onstage, riding a wave of critical acclaim as Oasis geared up for the release of the debut album, Definitely Maybe, the following month.

    “We played Pushin’ Too Hard by the Seeds, which has two chords (Am and G),” says McNabb, posting on Facebook. “He struggled to fit into this basic pattern, and when I told him to take a solo, he royalled [messed up] his Callards [‘trousers’ in Cockney rhyming slang].

    “The show was recorded. When he learned I was releasing it, he demanded he be allowed to redo his performance. When I said it was a live album, and that’s what was going out, he ordered his name be taken off the credits as I was ‘cashing in.’ Formidable songwriter, entry-level strummer (still). Bit of a dick.”

    McNabb’s story appears to have been inspired by footage from an old interview with Gallagher, which has recently gone viral. In the interview, filmed in Tokyo on Oasis’s Standing on the Shoulder of Giants tour in 2000, Gallagher describes Eric Clapton as “fucking awful.”

    “Eric Clapton is not ‘fucking awful’, advises McNabb. “He’s nowhere near the rapture afforded him, but his work with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Cream, The Beatles, Plastic Ono Band, Blind Faith and Roger Waters was sterling. After Blind Faith, he changed beyond recognition, seduced by the minimalism of The Band, J.J. Cale and Jamaican music.”

    The version of Pushin’ Too Hard recorded with the uncredited Gallagher was eventually released on Ian McNabb’s Merseybeast album in 1996. McNabb’s latest solo album, 65, was released in April.

  • Ukrainian Post-Punk Trio Small Depo Explores Love, Loss, and Fear With “Pryhody” (Adventures)

    Ukraine’s Small Depo return from their long break with Pryhody, and the album comes in like a van with bad brakes, a cracked windshield, and somebody in the back still arguing with God. The Kyiv post-punk band, founded in 2014, has always known its way around 80s tension, but here the old machinery gets dented, kicked, and made to run on nerve. Think Midnight Oil’s open-road charge getting dragged through Ministry’s metal shop, with the fumes of loss, love, fear, and bad decisions coming up through the floorboards.

    The title means “Adventures,” which sounds cheerful until the record starts throwing elbows. These are adventures in the adult sense: years that take your face in both hands and make you look directly at what changed. Pryhody carries the marks of distance, exhaustion, friendship, fear, and the slow, unglamorous business of accepting what cannot be fixed by volume alone. Small Depo do not prettify any of it. They bang it into shape.

    Rozkazhy (Tell Me), the lead single, works through choice, responsibility, and the ending that waits for everybody with a cigarette behind its ear. The song moves with a hard, clipped urgency, as if the band has no patience left for decorative despair. The vocals sound cornered but lucid, the rhythm section keeps pushing, and the guitars scrape at the edges with enough bite to keep the room awake.

    Previously released singles Elektromerezhi (“Power Grid”) and Limb slot into the album like old bruises you forgot to explain. Limb, especially, has a tense physical charge, all motion and damage, and its video, made with the music label of the Third Army Corps and director Sofiko, extends the album’s sense of uncertainty, transformation, and inner search without turning the whole affair into art-school fog.

    The record’s real engine sits inside frontman Maksym Ishchenko’s account of how it came together. “A year of crisis and profound changes in life,” he muses. Thousands of kilometers traveled. Six months of consistent work in the studio and on myself. Standing shoulder to shoulder with people who believed in me and continue to inspire me. All of this has poured into our new material.”

    The band came back because the songs had weight, and because staying quiet would have meant letting the pressure win. A collaborative track with Скажи щось погане adds another voice to the wreckage and keeps the album’s momentum from becoming too sealed inside its own skull.

    Small Depo’s music already has a strange second life through Chernobyl Radio in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl and the documentary Episodes: Shadow of Chornobyl. Pryhody should push them further out. It is loud with memory, rough with change, and alive in the way a busted amp is alive when somebody still has the nerve to plug it in.

  • BRIT FLOYD Welcomes MACHAN “MARGARET” TAYLOR & SCOTT PAGE As Special Guests For Their Ongoing “The Moon, The Wall and Beyond” North American Tour

    Brit Floyd — described by Rolling Stone as “widely recognized as the world’s premiere Pink Floyd experience” — has announced that legendary Pink Floyd vocalist Machan “Margaret” Taylor will join the band as a special guest for select dates on their ongoing “The Moon, The Wall and Beyond” 2026 North American tour, beginning July 10 at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. The group will also welcome saxophone sensation Scott Page — known for his work with Pink Floyd, Toto, and Supertramp — for two shows: July 10 in Los Angeles and July 11 in San Diego.

    Nearly four decades after performing with Pink Floyd on the A Momentary Lapse of Reason and Delicate Sound of Thunder tours, Machan Taylor — credited as Margret Taylor during her time with the band — is rejoining Brit Floyd to reprise some of her most celebrated performances. She is also the author of the new memoir Naked Out Loud, which traces her journey from her childhood in Japan and New Jersey to singing alongside Pink Floyd on two of the band’s landmark world tours.

    “We are incredibly honored to welcome Machan Taylor back to the Brit Floyd tour this summer,” said Andy Robbins, CEO of Palladium Entertainment and producer of Brit Floyd’s world tours. “Her voice helped define some of Pink Floyd’s greatest live moments and having her share the stage with us is a real privilege. We know fans will be thrilled to experience the magic she brings to these songs.”

    The “The Moon, The Wall and Beyond” tour, produced by Palladium Entertainment, celebrates 15 years of Brit Floyd — founded in 2011 — and stands as the group’s most ambitious production to date. The concept spotlights two of Pink Floyd’s most iconic and best-selling albums: The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall. Setlists feature “Time,” “Money,” “Comfortably Numb,” and “Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2,” alongside selections from Wish You Were Here, Animals, and other fan favorites. On select nights, fully dedicated thematic performances for each album will create two distinct concert experiences within the same tour.

    The run is part of a larger 123-date North American tour. Brit Floyd will also team up with Get the Led Out — a tribute to Led Zeppelin — for two special collaborative engagements: Aug. 1 at the Broadview Stage at SPAC in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and Aug. 8 at Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater in Bridgeport, Conn.

    Founded in 2011, Brit Floyd has performed more than 1,600 shows worldwide. Over the years, the group has shared the stage with several alumni of Pink Floyd and Roger Waters’ touring ensembles, including Guy Pratt, Scott Page, Durga McBroom, Roberta Freeman, Machan Taylor, Harry Waters, and Graham Broad. In 2025, Brit Floyd collaborated with legendary producer and engineer Alan Parsons for a run of shows across California and Nevada, drawing nearly 20,000 fans.

  • IRON MAIDEN to Complete “Run For Your Lives” Tour Film at Knebworth’s Eddfest

    Iron Maiden has announced new filming plans for their forthcoming cinematic tour documentary, confirming the project will be completed at Eddfest — their 50th anniversary celebration at Knebworth — on July 11, following a power outage that cut their June 22 concert at La Défense Arena in Paris dramatically short.

    The Paris show, part of the band’s current “Run For Your Lives” world tour, had been playing to more than 30,000 fans in the middle of a ferocious heatwave — with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees — when a total power cut struck the building approximately 50 minutes in, toward the end of “Two Minutes to Midnight,” plunging the entire stadium into silence and darkness.

    Full power was eventually restored, and the band retook the stage roughly an hour later. Local police granted a curfew extension to 11:35 PM — but no further, as Paris public transit closes shortly thereafter and officials did not want more than 30,000 fans stranded in the city’s streets in the extreme heat. In the time remaining, Iron Maiden was able to complete their main set, closing with “Iron Maiden,” though the three planned encores — “Aces High,” “Fear of the Dark,” and “Wasted Years” — were not performed.

    Steve Harris addressed the situation in an official statement: “You all know what happened in Paris, we all know what happened in Paris, so we’re gonna finish it off at Knebworth, and we’ll see you there.”

    Bruce Dickinson added: “We’re not going to lose what we did in Paris but we’re going to add to it with some amazing stuff from Knebworth. So Knebworth, be on ya best behavior!!”

    With fans from both the Paris concert and Eddfest now set to be part of the finished film, the decision means the “Run For Your Lives” production — currently halfway through its world tour run — will receive a proper cinematic conclusion at one of the most storied venues in rock history.

    Eddfest will also feature Iron Maiden’s “Infinite Dreams” museum experience, bringing to life the band’s pictorial book of the same name with more than 50 items spanning nearly 50 years of history. Among the artifacts on display: the iconic pharaoh’s head from the World Slavery tour, Eddie’s ray-gun from the 1986 Somewhere on Tour, the electric chair from the The X Factor era, the tank commander Eddie from the A Matter of Life and Death tour, the baphomet from The Number of the Beast, the Phantom of the Opera organ from the Maiden England tour, and personal mementoes from the late Paul Di’Anno onward.

    Longtime Iron Maiden manager Rod Smallwood said: “We’ve raided Eddie’s archive, Steve’s garden and our very own offices, warehouses and homes to bring you some actual pieces of our history! More than 50 items from almost 50 years of history will be on display for tens of thousands of you to see. Try to be there early, because sadly there likely won’t be time for every one of you to take everything in, especially as we have so many other exciting things happening on site. This weekend is for you, our fans. We are trying to do something special and a bit different in celebration of 50 years — a full-on MAIDEN experience from the moment you arrive on site to the minute you leave.”

    The festival’s “Maidenville” on-site village will be open to campers throughout the weekend. Friday’s entertainment includes live performances from former Iron Maiden vocalist Blaze Bayley and Gypsy’s Kiss, as well as Eddie’s Dive Bar, the Unfair Funfair with Eddie-themed rides and games, and Eddie’s Emporium.   • Brian May and Rick Wakeman join stellar lineup at 2026 Starmus festival

    Queen legend Brian May and prog icon Rick Wakeman have been confirmed as performers at this year’s Starmus conference in the Canary Islands.

    Starmus VIII – The Search For Truth promises to bring together “Nobel laureates, legendary astronauts, pioneering scientists, technology leaders, and world-renowned artists”, and will take place on the islands of Tenerife and LaPalma from October 17-26.

    Joining May onstage will be Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, with whom he performed a version of Queen’s Who Wants To Live Forever in Lajatico, Tuscany, in 2024, plus soprano Sarah Brightman, the Las Palmas Symphony Orchestra, and the Starmus All Stars Band. Wakeman will be performing with Moldovan violinist and composer Rusanda Panfili. Further artists will be announced.

    “From Neil Armstrong to Richard Dawkins to Jean-Michel Jarre and beyond, past Starmus festivals have delivered their promise of uniting top-level art and science,” says May. “Starmus VIII will continue that quest with its theme ‘The Search For Truth’, and our hopes are very high.”

    Starmus VIII will also celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Starmus Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication, which has previously been awarded to May, Hans Zimmer, Jean Michel Jarre, Brian Eno and Laurie Anderson, and see the introduction of a new award, the Starmus Jane Goodall Earth Medal, named in honour of the late primatologist and anthropologist. Goodhall was a speaker at Starmus in 2025.

    “Jane Goodall and Stephen Hawking are two human spirits who changed the way we see the world,” says May. “One by looking to the stars, the other by reminding us of the urgent need to protect the life beneath our feet, and the need for true humanity in science. Bringing their legacies together at Starmus is something profoundly moving and deeply necessary for our time.”

    Brian May founded Starmus with astronomer/musician Garik Israelian in 2011. Tickets for this year’s event are available from the Starmus website.

  • Joe Bonamassa extends record with 31st top Billboard Blues album

    Joe Bonamassa has extended his own record for the most #1 albums on the Billboard Blues chart after his latest live release, The Spirit of Rory: Live From Cork, debuted at #1.

    The album, which pays tribute to legendary Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher, marks Bonamassa’s 31st #1 on the Billboard Blues Albums chart, further adding to one of the most successful chart runs in the history of the genre.

    Recorded during Bonamassa’s tribute performances in Cork, Ireland, The Spirit of Rory: Live From Cork celebrates Gallagher’s lasting influence while showcasing Bonamassa’s interpretations of songs from the late blues rock icon’s catalog.

    “When I started making records I never thought I would be in a position to have survived long enough to make enough albums in the first place, let alone hold the record,” says Bonamassa. “Live albums have always been my favorite to listen to as a fan and as an artist to make. It allows you to expand beyond the constraints of a studio. Having fewer options live drives the sense of urgency and creativity I have found.”

    Bonamassa thanked fans around the world for helping the album reach the top of the chart in a social media post.
