What else is on Disney+

Disney+ is one of the many TV and film streaming services available, but while I’d like to see more music-related content, there’s still plenty to get excited about.

The service is home to the likes of Peter Jackson’s Beatles doc Let It Be, and the three-part series Get Back. Other musical highlights include Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story, Summer ’82: When Zappa Came To Sicily, Abbey Road: If These Walls Could Sing, Hip-Hop And The White House, and the 2024 biopic The Beach Boys.

For me, the real draw of Disney+ and the reason I’ve had a subscription for years is that it’s home to the entire Star Wars universe – all the classic movies are here, alongside spin-offs such as The Mandalorian, Andor, The Book Of Boba Fett and The Clone Wars animated series. There’s even an option to watch everything in timeline order.

Marvel content is another draw, and like the Star Wars content, it’s crammed with flicks, series and shorts – and the ability to binge on the entire MCU complete timeline.

There’s also all the classic Pixar movies and shorts, the National Geographic Channel, and the Hulu network (featuring the excellent comedy crime drama Only Murders In The Building starring Steve Martin, Selena Gomez and Martin Short.

Former W.A.S.P. guitarist Chris Holmes has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and has already begun radiotherapy in France. It is the second cancer battle for the 68-year-old, who beat throat and neck cancer in 2022. His wife and manager, Catherine Savean Holmes, has launched a GoFundMe after an administrative error left him on emergency-only health coverage — a mistake that meant he waited three months before receiving any care at all, and has left the couple with €20,000 in medical debt and climbing.

What Happened

Holmes has lived in France with Catherine since 2014, and that’s where he’s now receiving treatment. The radiotherapy has started. That part is underway.

The problem is everything around it.

Because of an administrative error connected to their marriage registration, the French health insurance system placed Holmes under emergency-only coverage. In practice that meant a three-month wait before he received any care whatsoever — and it means only the radiotherapy delivered during the month of July is actually covered.

Everything else is on them. The hormone therapy, both standard and new generation. The scans and the PET scans. The biopsy. The blood tests. The daily travel back and forth to the hospital. That has already put the family €20,000 into medical debt, and Catherine says it keeps climbing every month the treatment continues.

There’s a second trap inside all of this. Holmes has to stay in France to keep receiving the radiotherapy, because leaving the country would risk his emergency status lapsing. So he can’t travel. And if he can’t travel, he can’t tour. And if he can’t tour, he can’t earn.

That’s the situation in full: a 68-year-old man with cancer, stuck in place, watching the bills stack up while the one thing he’s done for a living for forty-plus years is off the table.

The GoFundMe

Catherine has set a goal of €50,000, roughly $57,000 US, to cover medication, medical exams and the transport Chris needs to finish his treatment safely.

In their message on the page, the couple were open about how hard it was to ask again — they’d been through this in 2022, when a GoFundMe carried them through his throat cancer treatment, and they said at the time they hoped they’d never have to ask twice. They also made a point of saying that if you can’t give, messages and support mean just as much.

He’s Been Here Before

This isn’t Holmes’ first fight. In February 2022 he was diagnosed with throat and neck cancer, immediately postponed his touring commitments, and went through seven weeks of radiation therapy. Five months later he told fans the cancer was gone.

Looking back now, there were signs this one had been building for a while. In April, Holmes cancelled a UK and Scandinavian tour that had been scheduled for May. The Abyss club in Gothenburg, where he was due to play on May 27, announced he was scrapping the shows over health issues requiring immediate attention. A week later, Catherine told fans it was a minor prostate issue that was already being taken care of, and that Chris would be back on his feet and on stage soon.

Nobody was being dishonest. That’s just how these things go — you hope it’s small, right up until it isn’t.

Why Chris Holmes Matters

If you’re younger and the name isn’t immediately landing, here’s the short version.

Chris Holmes joined W.A.S.P. in 1982 and played on the run of records that built the band — the self-titled debut, The Last Command, Inside The Electric Circus, The Headless Children. He co-wrote “Wild Child” with Blackie Lawless. He stayed until 1990, came back in 1996, and left again in 2001.

He’s also responsible for one of the most infamous pieces of footage in the entire history of heavy metal: the swimming pool scene in Penelope Spheeris’ 1988 documentary The Decline Of Western Civilization Part II, floating in a pool, pouring vodka over his own face while his mother sat at the side. Whatever you think about that scene — and people have been arguing about it for nearly forty years — it is permanently part of the culture. Ask any metalhead over forty. They know exactly which scene you mean.

His story since then has been genuinely difficult, and the 2021 documentary Mean Man: The Story Of Chris Holmes covered a lot of it — the fallout from W.A.S.P., the struggles with addiction, and the move to France for a fresh start. The man has taken a hell of a lot of shots and kept getting back up.

Blackie Lawless Is On The Loaded Radio Podcast Next Week

One more thing worth knowing, and the timing on this is genuinely strange.

Anybody who’s followed this band knows the relationship between the two men has been complicated for a very long time. We’ve covered it from both directions: Blackie saying he had no desire to reunite with Holmes, and his comments around the 40th anniversary run about which former members he was and wasn’t still in contact with. He’s also been consistently clear that a classic-lineup reunion isn’t something he’s willing to give fans, even while touring the debut album in full.

At this point, Peter Gabriel is more than halfway through the long rollout of his new album o\i. Rather than releasing a few advance singles, he’s sharing new songs all year, with another one arriving whenever there’s a full moon. Today, he shares the sprawling and tender “One by One,” which lasts for nearly 10 minutes and which presumably functions as the album centerpiece. It returns Gabriel to the character of Mozo, a mythical recurring figure in Gabriel’s work who first appeared on Gabriel’s worth with Genesis in the ’70s.
