MOD SUN has shared another piece of his new era, and it’s readymade for the Summer in all the best ways possible.

It’s called ‘2am’ and it is all about those nights that stick with you forever and the people that make them special. The essence of what it is to be human and to connect with each other, it’s as much a love song about a person as it is about a place. It’s also a love song about yourself, and what it means to take the reigns and do things that are right for you over everyone else. At this point in MOD SUN’s journey, that is a sentiment that shines the brightest, and this song demonstrates it in screaming colour.

MOD had this to say about it:

“I made “2am” on my first trip to Nashville before I officially moved there. I wrote it about one of my first nights out when I fell in love with the city.  I met a girl who dragged me around her favorite spots. We had the greatest time, but when the lights went on, she was gone, and I never saw her again.”

John Mayall’s legacy as one of the most influential figures in blues and rock music will be celebrated with the release of Guitar Heroes: The Decca Years 1965–1967 on October 9.

The collection will be available as a four-LP all-analogue (AAA) vinyl box set and a four-SACD deluxe box set, bringing together four landmark albums recorded during Mayall’s influential years with the Bluesbreakers.

The box set includes John Mayall Plays John Mayall (Live at Klooks Kleek) (1965), Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton (1966), A Hard Road (1967) and Crusade (1967). Together, the albums document the arrival of Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor, who each served as guitarist for the Bluesbreakers before going on to form Cream and Fleetwood Mac or join The Rolling Stones.

The release captures a pivotal period in British blues history, as Mayall’s Bluesbreakers helped transform American electric blues into a distinctly British sound that would become the foundation of the blues-rock movement.

The collection also features newly commissioned liner notes by music historian and author Harry Shapiro, examining the evolution of the Bluesbreakers, the succession of Clapton, Green and Taylor, and the band’s lasting influence on British blues and rock.

The vinyl edition has been newly mastered using an all-analogue signal path at Abbey Road Studios directly from the original Decca master tapes, preserving the original recordings without digital processing.

Both the vinyl and SACD editions include a 40-page hardcover book featuring an expanded essay on the lineage of the Bluesbreakers’ guitarists and their influence on popular music, along with a specially commissioned visual family tree tracing their connections to Cream, Fleetwood Mac and The Rolling Stones.

More than six decades after the recordings were originally made, Guitar Heroes: The Decca Years 1965–1967 revisits the formative years of John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers and the role the band played in shaping the future of British blues and blues-rock.

Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson made a surprise appearance at San Diego Comic-Con last night (July 23), joining Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong’s rock and roll covers band The Coverups to perform Mott The Hoople classic All The Young Dudes.

The 67-year-old British metal icon’s unannounced cameo at the event, a Fandom / Z2 Comics party launching the weekender, came five songs into The Coverups’ 26-song set. Dickinson had previously covered the song, written by David Bowie and recorded for Mott The Hoople’s Bowie-produced fifth album in 1972, on his 1990 solo album Tattooed Millionaire.

The Coverups set also included faithful takes on Buzzcock’s Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve) ,Ramones’ I Wanna Be Sedated, Nirvana’s Drain You – dedicated to late L7 bassist Jennifer Finch – and classic songs by Cheap Trick, Ozzy Osbourne, Motley Crue, The Strokes and more.

Bruce Dickinson previously collaborated with Z2 on his science-fantasy comic book series The Mandrake Project, a tie-in with his acclaimed 2024 solo album bearing the same title.

While the album was the first solo release from Iron Maiden’s singer in almost 20 years, Dickinson has promised that there is more new music to come.

“it’s not over,” he promised in 2024. “I’m going to be writing music in two or three weeks, I hope, with [longtime guitarist and collaborator] Roy[‘Z’ Ramirez] again, because we’ve got more stuff we wanna do. So, yeah, there’ll be another album, because we already have 10 or 12 different ideas for it.”

The Mandrake Project reached number 3 in the UK charts upon its release in March 2024, and peaked at number 176 on the Billboard 200.

Barring future surprise appearances, Dickinson will next be onstage on August 29 when Iron Maiden resume their Run For Your Lives world tour at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Canada.

Major League are well and truly back with their first release since 2014, and they are rolling back the years in style.

Titled ‘Heavenly Hell’, it’s a track that feels like a summation of every chapter of the band in shimmering colour. From the bouyant riffs, similar to the ones found on 2010 EP ‘The Truth Is’, to the stark emotionally admissions, not dissimilar to the ones that defined 2014’s ‘There’s Nothing Wrong With Me’, it is pure pop-punk in every regard. Catchy, honest and brimming with energy that feels as nostalgic as it does fresh.

The band had this to say about the track and what it represents for them:

“‘Heavenly Hell’ was born out of patience and transparency. Thepatience to allow yourself to grow and the transparency to share that growth in meetingpeople where they are. When we first began talking again after 13 years, the only cleargoal we had was to be friends again. And as much as I’d like to think music was never onthe table, I think truthfully it never really left the table to begin with. We always felt like wewere meant to do this together. This song is proof.”

Everyone was mad about the Auto-Tune. I wasn’t mad about the Auto-Tune. Sure, Julian Casablancas kind of sounds like a malfunctioning robot, but what sucked about “Going Shopping” and “Falling Out Of Love” is how utterly forgettable they were. The Strokes are one of this century’s most important rock bands because they can make a song sound simultaneously lazy and masterful. Today the Strokes’ seventh album is out, and fortunately it’s not all as uninspired as its advance singles.

Louisiana blues artist Jovin Webb has released his new single, “Every Time I Roll the Dice,” along with an official music video. The track is the third single from his upcoming sophomore album, Son of a Sinner, which arrives September 18 via Blind Pig Records.

Originally recorded by Texas roots-rock legend Delbert McClinton, Webb’s version was produced in Nashville by multi-GRAMMY Award winner Tom Hambridge, who also previously played drums with McClinton. The recording showcases Webb’s powerful vocals while paying tribute to the original, including a harmonica solo in the same spot as McClinton’s version.

“Delbert’s recording is one of my favorites—that voice is one of a kind,” Webb said. “I wanted to bring my own energy to it without losing what makes the song so special. Getting to do it with Tom, who actually worked with Delbert, made it even more special.”

“Every Time I Roll the Dice” follows the previously released singles “Gunpowder & Lead” and “Pray for Me,” both of which appear on Son of a Sinner. Produced by Hambridge, the 11-track album blends blues, gospel and Southern rock while continuing the storytelling approach Webb introduced on his debut album, Drifter.

Son of a Sinner will be released September 18 on Crimson Red vinyl, CD and digital formats and is available for pre-order now.
