The Vikings are rowing back to shore. Amon Amarth have announced their 13th studio album, The Allfather Awakens, arriving October 2 via Metal Blade Records — the Swedish melodic death metal institution’s first full-length since 2022’s The Great Heathen Army. The 10-song album is led by opening track Gjallarhorn, out now with an official video, and it lands alongside plans for an entirely new stage production inspired by Oden’s legendary Golden Hall. The Allfather Awakens: What We Know

Due October 2 through Metal Blade Records — the label Amon Amarth have called home for their entire three-decade recording career — The Allfather Awakens is built around Oden, the Norse all-father of war, wisdom, death, magic, and poetry who has loomed over the band’s lyrics and artwork since the beginning. Notably, the band stress this is not a concept album; instead, it’s a collection of historically inspired epic tales of conflict and sacrifice for a greater good, with Oden as the connecting thread.

The cover art is a striking portrait of Oden painted by Tom Thiel, marking his seventh album cover for the band, and song titles like Eight Legs Of Thunder, Kvasir’s Blood, and Oden’s Hunt make it clear the Norse mythology well is nowhere near running dry. In classic Amon Amarth fashion, even the album’s marketing leans into legend: the campaign invokes Oden’s sacrifice of his own eye at the Well of Wisdom in exchange for cosmic foresight, and challenges fans to seek out “the eye” themselves.

The album announcement arrives with its opening track, Gjallarhorn — named for the mythical horn that signals the coming of Ragnarök. A New Way Of Forging A Viking Album

Here’s the part longtime fans will find genuinely fascinating: Amon Amarth completely rebuilt their process for this record. Rather than waiting to get off the road, the band wrote while touring, then recorded The Allfather Awakens across two separate sessions months apart at producer Jacob Hansen’s studio in Denmark — the first in spring 2025, with final recording wrapped in March 2026.

The bigger shift was inside the sessions themselves. Guitarist Olavi Mikkonen explained that the band worked on a single track at a time and made each song as good as possible — finishing drums, guitars, and vocals completely before even starting the next song. The result, by design, is an album where every track was treated like a single. The band even changed their guitar tone philosophy, moving away from modern 5150 amps and back to classic Marshalls for a slightly less polished, more organic attack. Fittingly, the song that gave the album its name, The Allfather Awakes, was the final one written.
