Lustmord Lombardo, the pairing of two of heavy and experimental music’s most respected musicians, ambient heavyweight Lustmord and percussive force Dave Lombardo, release “The Desolate Shore Part I: Submergence” from the duo’s forthcoming album, The Pulse of Atoms (Oct. 2, Ipecac Recordings).

“’The Desolate Shore’ is a meditative landscape that feels like a slow descent into the abyss,” Lombardo says of the newly released track. “There is a sense of the ground moving beneath you as shifting rhythms make it feel like nothing is ever completely still beneath the surface.”

The pair previously released “Paleomagnetic Resonance,” an eight-minute meditative composition that Consequence described as “a brooding atmospheric drone track.”

Lustmord, discussing the duo’s approach to the album, shared: “One thing about an album like this is that you can’t really point it out as being part of any specific genre or, hopefully, any specific period. Is it from last year? Is it from 10 years ago, is it from 20 years ago, is it from 5 years in the future? It’s trying to create something that has its own sound, not tapping into whatever musical language or history you’re familiar with. It goes way, way further back. This is the sound of planets dying or of stars being born. It’s about a bigger picture. It’s the sound of the birth of the universe and the death of the universe; it’s not rock and roll.”

The two musicians met backstage at a Fantômas show, introduced by mutual friend Buzz Osborne, around the time that Lustmord and Melvins released their collaborative album. Nearly two decades later, Lombardo and Lustmord convened as Lustmord Lombardo, crafting an album that is as cold and distant as it is frantic and engaging. The Pulse of Atoms showcases an unheard side of Lombardo and brings Lustmord back to his industrial roots.

Rather than composing songs in a traditional sense, Lustmord built evolving walls and vortices of sound, leaving room for Lombardo to add percussion and various synthesizer layers. Once the editing and arrangement were complete, Lustmord mixed and mastered the record, which was a balancing act between the two players’ large, loud musical presences.

Album pre-orders, including a pair of limited-edition vinyl variants (Clear and Smoke), CD, and digital pre-saves, are available now.

Lustmord is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of dark ambient and industrial music. Active since the early ‘80s, his work draws on field recordings, low-frequency drones, and cinematic sound design to create immersive, atmospheric pieces. Lustmord‘s catalog spans dozens of solo releases and collaborations, and his influence extends into film and game scoring, as well as experimental electronic production.

Dave Lombardo is a GRAMMY Award-winning drummer whose playing style helped define the sound of thrash and extreme metal. He is also one of the most versatile percussionists in heavy music, known as a founding member of Slayer, as well as for his work with Fantômas, Suicidal Tendencies, Dead Cross, Mr. Bungle, the Misfits, and a wide range of collaborations. In 2023, Lombardo released his debut solo album, Rites of Percussion, which NPR praised as “a very different side of one of metal’s most punishing drummers.”

Hustle Culture: Good name for a band, especially a post-punk band. This particular post-punk band comes from Cincinnati, and their debut EP Kill A Computer came out last year. Kill A Computer: Good title! Today, Hustle Culture follow that record with a single called “New Government Pyramid Scheme,” and I’m sensing a pattern here. Hustle Culture are good at naming things. They’re also good at making bracing, urgent, cynical stompers, and “New Government Pyramid Scheme” is one of those. Listen below.

Dutch composer Jozef Van Wissem and legendary American filmmaker Jim Jarmusch have announced two new collaborative albums, Bocca di Lupo and Mouth Of The Wolf, arriving together this fall. The lead single “Never Like You Said” is out today, and it features Courtney Barnett, who released her new record Creature Of Habit earlier this year.

There are many ways you can get people’s attention at the start of a record. I’ll never forget the first time I heard Pantera’s The Great Southern Trendkill and was blown away by how an album could open with that level of ferocity. The drums that fill your ears like gunfire at the opening of Mastodon’s Blood Mountain also spring to mind when it comes to memorable album openings but the daddy of them all, to these ears at least, comes in the form of naming more drugs than the anti-heroes of Trainspotting could consume in a weekend. Feel Good Hit Of The Summer’s thudding, trance inducing call to arms is as captivating an album opener as you will find and is the prefect starting point for this trippy, all encompassing journey from Queens of the Stone Age.

On an album that goes from pure rock fury to laid back, baby-making vibes, the one true constant throughout the album is groove. Sweet, sweet groove that grabs you like a velvet chokehold on each and every one of these tracks (even when those fucking trumpets come in at the end of the album) and never relinquishes her grip.

Whether that groove is found on the pumping, hip-shaking feel of Monsters In The Parasol, the campfire beauty of acoustic instrumental Lightning Song or the psychedelic stop-start vibes of Leg Of Lamb, each song is driven by beats that enthrall and hook you to the point that they could go on forever and you’d be too lost in it’s constraint to give a single, solitary fuck.

Something that Queens aren’t given enough credit for is the catchiness of their songwriting and Rated R is rammed full of all-time classic songs that have vocal lines the size of mountains. The Lost Art Of Keeping A Secret brims with flamboyant guitar licks and that irrepressible liquid bass but when the guitars go off like a landmine, that chorus is the stuff of legend. The desert punk of Quick And To The Pointless might have a Nick Oliveri vocal that could best be described as unhinged but, by god, that “Baby, baby you’re so sweet” refrain is a motherfucker to dislodge from your head. I’d also mention Homme’s smooth as butter delivery on Better Living Through The Chemistry but, frankly, we don’t want to make ovaries all over the world explode.

In truth, you could pick any of QOTSA’s first three albums and describe them as a classic record. Dave Grohl’s powerhouse tub-thumping on Songs For The Deaf adds the stuff of legends on top of stellar songwriting and that debut album is all rock and roll abandon and ‘couldn’t give less of a fuck’ attitude but Rated R gets our vote just for its ability to take you out of the world and make you truly lose yourself in the music. There’s magic in that. We can romanticise it all we like but there’s nothing like experiencing it.

Play it now and surrender.
