This opening song evokes a sense of nostalgia similar to that found in Black’s “Wonderful Life.” The emotional depth conveyed in the lyrics and instrumentation sets a high standard early on.

Following “Savage,” the album continues with “The Routes We Choose,” a track characterized by its intensity. In a raw and revealing exchange on a recent edition of the Loaded Radio Podcast, The Amity Affliction frontman Joel Birch has finally pulled back the curtain on the “irreparable breakdown” that led to founding member Ahren Stringer’s departure.
Speaking with candid intensity, Birch rejected the fan-driven “No Ahren, No Amity” narrative, confirming that the internal situation had reached a critical ultimatum. According to Birch, the split wasn’t a choice of preference, but a mechanical necessity for the group’s survival, stating that the alternative was the total dissolution of the band.
Why did Joel Birch issue a “Him or the Band” ultimatum?
The split from Ahren Stringer was the result of a situation so dire that it threatened the very existence of the group. Birch was blunt about the stakes involved, telling Loaded Radio: “There’s a good reason it happened and it had to happen and it was—it was that or the band stopped being a band. It was that serious and three of us didn’t want it to stop being a band.”
Birch further clarified that the decision was not a unilateral power move on his part, despite online assumptions. “I don’t think I did posture myself as the person that ran the band,” Birch noted. “There are a lot of assumptions that got made once we split with Aaron that I kicked Aaron out. It’s not how it went down… Everything with us is a discussion.”

“People online saying ‘no Ahren, no Amity‘ and it’s like, yeah, true—like if you want,” Birch countered. “But also no Dan, no Amity. No me, no Amity. Because it wouldn’t have sounded like the [expletive] band you like.” He emphasized that while Stringer wrote the Chasing Ghosts album “top to bottom,” the creative engine has since shifted, with Brown writing “everything really” by the time Misery was released.
What is the current creative and legal status of the band?
Despite the “grief” that comes with separating from a long-time vocal partner, Birch insists that from a creative standpoint, “nothing changed.” He credited Stringer for his ability to “put feeling behind my words” over the years but maintained that the split was entirely separate from Stringer’s musical contributions.
Legally, the situation remains complex. Birch acknowledged that Stringer is “still technically, you know, co-owner, director of the band’s company.” While the band navigates this new chapter with Jonny Reeves, they remain “legally tethered” to the past through the band’s business entity. Birch noted that while the media and the public may be in the dark, “the [expletive] music industry mostly knows what happened… and that’s why you haven’t heard bands coming out and saying anything [expletive] about us.”

Aurora Borealis – Disillusioned by the Illusion (2026)
Over the last few years, death metal has been steadily invaded by speed metal and late hardcore just like black metal because these genres are easy to produce so everyone can participate, but Aurora Borealis pushes back against this trend with an album full of roaring old-school riffs and speed thrills.
There are moments of course of bouncy riffs, but the pure looped-and-layered style of rhythmic speed metal is gone, replaced by melodic nodes in charging chromatic riffs and structured dialogue between riffs to make each song.
Unlike anything else recently, this is a futurist tribute to death metal, a clarion call for it to move forward by being what it always was instead of strictly trying to imitate the past or make a false future from outside influences. Instead pure darkness unfolds into infinite light.

Spanish black metal/punk force PVRGATORII is set to release a new EP, “Profane Rites For Cursed Times”, on May 29, 2026 through Night Terrors Records. Marking a significant new chapter in the band’s trajectory, the record will be issued as a strictly limited edition: a one-sided 12″ black vinyl with OBI strip, double-sided insert and an extensive 16-page fanzine entirely dedicated to the band, limited to 100 copies.

Far from being a mere accessory, the accompanying fanzine stands as a crucial extension of the release itself. Across sixteen pages, it delves deep into PVRGATORII’s world, tracing the band’s history, exploring the Barcelona underground that shaped them, documenting their approach to instrumentation, and offering a broader insight into the ethos that fuels their work. It is both a document and a statement, reinforcing the physical and cultural weight of the release in an increasingly intangible musical landscape.
Formed in Barcelona in 2018, PVRGATORII have consistently defined their sound as “Black Metal ov Death,” a volatile fusion of raw black metal abrasion, punk urgency, and noise-laden hostility. Yet their approach deliberately resists contemporary trends: while rooted in aggression and immediacy, their music avoids the swagger and looseness often associated with black’n’roll. Instead, “Profane Rites For Cursed Times” remains steeped in a sinister, malevolent atmosphere, where tension is never released into levity and every element serves a darker purpose.
Following their debut album “Con Las Uñas Clavadas En La Cara De Dios” (2021) and the subsequent “Marching Through Thee Night Guided by a Black Fire” (2024), this new EP sharpens the band’s identity even further.
