  • INTERVIEW: ANDY LA ROCQUE of LEX LEGION talks formation & future; the music & the friendship that led to their debut album

On Episode 20 of 50 Shades Of Slaids we catch up with guitarist and Producer Andy La Rocque who has a new band Lex Legion.

Who is Lex Legion you may ask?

Lex Legion was founded and forged from friendships over the last four decades Lex Legion are four fifths of the classic King Diamond band from the late 80’s Mikkey Dee, Pete Blakk, Hal Patino and Andy La Rocque. Remaining friends over the years although doing their own individual things came together. Pete Blakk & Andy La Rocque started writing together in 2008 and during the pandemic it added Hal Patino & Mikkey Dee. The band has taken stayed true to their heavy metal roots and tweaked it for the now giving it a modern twist as only they can. If nothing more, it’s what has been missing from the world and fills a void as only they can. The final piece to the puzzle was finding a vocalist and frontman Nils K. Rue, formerly of Pagans Mind. Rue was the obvious choice and someone La Rocque had worked with before and fits like a glove with some of the finest metal vocals you will ever hear.

In this chat we talk all things Lex Legion with La Rocque, the formation and the future of the band; the music and the friendship that led to their debut self-titled album.

Lex Legion is nothing short of a masterpiece and is simply a must hear record. It’s everything I fell in love with about metal as a teenager and then steps it up for today. It’s the furthest thing from nostalgia. This band could very well change the face and influence of metal all over again.

Thanks go to John, MNRK and of course Andy for making this possible.

    Andrzej Zyl Zostawiliśmy dom! Review

A beautiful guitar riff opens this single, creating an atmosphere that feels dystopian and futuristic. The music maintains a steady tension, beginning with an ambient tone. When the vocals enter, they do so with a striking intensity that resonates deeply. The voice pierces the soul. As the verse progresses, it gradually builds momentum with guitars entering and the rhythm becoming increasingly intense.

Then, the song reaches a powerful explosion in the chorus. The melody carries a nostalgic and intense feeling, reflecting layers of emotion. This single is a rollercoaster ride of sentiments, infused with a remarkable intensity. It draws inspiration from genuine experiences of leaving behind family, memories, and a sense of familiarity while pursuing a better future.

Listening to this song evokes the desire to take a drive, losing yourself on the roads with many thoughts swirling in your mind. This piece encapsulates the moments of farewell in the search for a more fulfilling life. It highlights that the quest for a better future often comes with a hefty price, leaving behind emotional scars that linger within. The song’s construction is melodically impressive, enhancing its emotional depth.

Zostawiliśmy dom! – Sound and Atmosphere

The impactful melody keeps listeners engaged throughout. The gradual buildup of the song guides the emotional landscape. It resonates with anyone who has faced difficult goodbyes or longed for something greater. The tension created in the intro draws listeners into the world of the song. The eventual transition to a full chorus elevates the experience, taking them on an emotional journey.

Andrzej Zyl’s voice carries weight, delivering the lyrics with power and vulnerability. The way he navigates between softness and intensity artfully captures the essence of the journey described in the song.

Zostawiliśmy dom! – Performance and Production

The clarity of each instrument ensures that every layer of sound contributes to the overarching theme.

Listeners will find themselves immersed in this track, reflecting on their own experiences of leaving something cherished behind. The thematic elements are universal, making it accessible to a wide audience.

It’s a beautiful tune. I wholeheartedly recommend “Zostawiliśmy dom!” for its emotional impact and melodic construction.

  • Album Review: Converge – Hum of Hurt

What a year to be a Converge fan. They drop Love Is Not Enough in February, their first solo album for nine long years and which (in my humble opinion) is a real career highlight. It’s a proper no-frills, no-messing-about Converge album but if you want more in-depth thoughts on that one, you can check … Continue reading Album Review: Converge – Hum of Hurt
