Following his acclaimed 2020 album The Red Planet, Rick Wakeman makes a triumphant and inevitable return to Mars with Return To The Red Planet, a sweeping new progressive work that fuses science, imagination and musical virtuosity into one of the most ambitious recordings of his career. Return To The Red Planet will be released on the Madfish label on October 16th.

At a time when space exploration has moved back to the forefront of human endeavour – with missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond once again capturing the world’s imagination – Return To The Red Planet feels both timely and visionary, rekindling the cosmic spirit that helped define progressive rock’s golden age.
Where its predecessor opened the story, this album explores the planet’s ancient lakes, vast canyon systems, shifting dust storms and geological epochs, drawing directly on the remarkable images and research that have transformed our understanding of Mars in recent years, Wakeman immersing himself in planetary research, data, and mission reports before a single note was written.
Recorded between August 2025 and January 2026, the project also marks a welcome return to full band recording, with all musicians working together at Decoy Studios – a creative approach Wakeman considers essential to capturing the spontaneity and energy of progressive rock at its best.
The album is performed by Wakeman’s English Rock Ensemble, featuring bassist Lee Pomeroy, guitarist Dave Colquhoun, drummer Adam Falkner and vocalist Mollie Marriott, daughter of legendary Steve Marriott. The album was mastered by renowned engineer Simon Heyworth.
Among the album’s centrepieces is Bowie’s Vision, a deeply personal homage to Wakeman’s friend David Bowie, whose fascination with Mars helped shape popular culture’s image of the planet. The connection is more than thematic: Wakeman performed the iconic piano on Bowie’s Life on Mars?, making this tribute both musical and autobiographical – a reflection on a shared history, a lasting friendship and one of rock’s most celebrated recordings.
The music was initially composed as keyboard “templates” at Nursery Studios, before being expanded collaboratively by the band at Decoy Studios and engineered by Toby Wood. Final overdubs and mixing with producer/engineer Erik Jordan bring the vision into sharp focus – from sweeping symphonic passages to intricate rhythmic sequences and haunting choral textures.

On Wednesday, July 22, Birmingham will hold its first-ever “Ozzy Day,” a free, citywide program of live music, public art, and tributes honoring Ozzy Osbourne’s life and his lifelong connection to the city that raised him. The date isn’t incidental — it’s the one-year anniversary of Osbourne’s death, and the program transforms locations across the city center, including the now-famous Black Sabbath Bench, into a living tribute.

What’s Actually Happening On July 22
The day is organized by Central BID and OPUS (Outdoor Places Unusual Spaces), in partnership with Birmingham City Council, Birmingham New Street, and Westside BID. It centers on the places that shaped Osbourne’s own story: the Black Sabbath Bench and Bridge, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, Birmingham New Street Station, Bullring, Selfridges, and Martineau Place.

A special performance by musicians from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra takes place outside Selfridges in Bullring at 12:15 p.m. Visitors can get free commemorative Polaroids with a specially dressed “Ozzy the Bull” at Birmingham New Street from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m., and the Birmingham Music Archive will be on hand collecting fan stories and memories for a commemorative guestbook meant to become a lasting part of the day’s legacy.
There’s real weight behind Bostin Brass’s involvement specifically. The same five-piece band performed at Osbourne’s public funeral procession last July, playing “Iron Man” as the cortège paused at the Black Sabbath Bench — a moment that became one of the most quietly devastating images of that entire week. Having them return to play multiple sets across the same city center, on the anniversary of his passing, closes a real loop rather than just filling a schedule.
The Museum Exhibit And The Shirt With 52 Shows On It
Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery’s “Ozzy Osbourne: Working Class Hero” exhibition — including his actual stage throne — remains open as part of the day, alongside Central BID’s “Celebrating Black Sabbath In The City” trail, a self-guided map covering the bench, the Ozzy mural, and other landmarks tied to the band’s history. A limited-edition Ozzy Day t-shirt goes on sale at Selfridges starting July 22, featuring artwork from his final performance at “Back To The Beginning” on the front — the reunion concert where Ozzy, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward shared a stage one last time — and, on the back, a full listing of all 52 shows he played in Birmingham across his solo and Black Sabbath career.
For anyone newer to the story, the Black Sabbath Bench wasn’t originally built as a memorial — it became one. Fans began leaving flowers, signs, and messages there within days of Osbourne’s death, turning a piece of public art into a genuine gathering place practically overnight. Osbourne himself had planned to visit it in person before he passed, joking in a video with Sharon that he’d get there “even if I have to crawl.” Birmingham City Council formally recognized Black Sabbath’s contribution to the city with Freedom Of The City on June 30, 2025 — a month before Osbourne’s death.
Councillor Deborah Harries, the city’s cabinet member for culture, summed up the day’s purpose simply: “Ozzy Osbourne is one of Birmingham’s foremost cultural figures, and we continue to honor his legacy here in the city, where his journey began.”
