Every week there is a tidal wave of new music released unto the world. Each Friday we’ll round up some of the best new music available, some we’ve reviewed, some we haven’t, but all worth checking out!

GHOUL released their Noxious Concoctions EP in 2024 via Tankcrimes. The EP reaped critical acclaim from humans nationwide ultimately earning placement on various Billboard charts upon its first week of release including #2 on the Current Hard Music chart, #5 on the Top New Artist chart, and #19 on the Independent Record Label chart.

All tracks on Noxious Concoctions were digested, dissected, fermented, and cremated by the members of GHOUL, except “1-900-DTH-LINE,” originally composed by Funerot. The EP was recorded by Scott Evans at Antisleep Audio and Sharkbite Studios, mastered by Dan Randall at Mammoth Sound Mastering, and includes gang vocals by The Moron Cavern Shakled Choir and “swamp hag” vocals by Laurie Sue Shanaman.

It’s possible that no drummer has ever operated under the scrutiny that Anika Nilles has experienced on Rush‘s Fifty Something tour. Replacing the irreplaceable Neil Peart was always going to be a huge task, but the German musician has approached the task with enormous skill, drawing praise not only for her performances behind the kit, but for the infectious joy with which she performs.

Still, the scrutiny persists. And during Rush’s first show at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas, this week, Nilles provided onlookers with another stellar moment. During the much-loved drum fill section of set closer Tom Sawyer, she lost her grip on one of her sticks, sending it cartwheeling away from the kit and out of reach.

Lesser mortals might have panicked, but Nilles recovered immediately, grabbing a spare stick and continuing her path around the toms. As usual, the completed fill was greeted with roars of approval from the crowd, many of whom wouldn’t have noticed the mishap.

Video of the moment suggests that Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson picked up on the near-calamity, with an amused Lifeson eventually picking up the stray stick and tossing it into the audience, and it was smiles all round as Tom Sawyer finished.

This isn’t the first time Nilles has lost a stick on the tour. Ninety seconds into the opening number on the first night of the tour, Xanadu, the same thing happened. A fumbled stick. An instant recovery. Onwards and upwards.

For as long as I can remember, America’s Got Talent has felt like an endless parade of cheesy magicians, manufactured sob stories, and whatever out-of-touch nonsense Simon Cowell decides to praise. But against all odds, the show finally managed to crown a winner with actual talent. Sixteen-year-old Thai rock guitarist and singer Nene Royal just took home the grand prize for Season 21.

Seeing a genuine alternative rock and metal artist dominate a network television competition is a massive breath of fresh air. During the grand finale, Nene Royal completely stole the spotlight while performing alongside Linkin Park, proving she is already way beyond the scope of a basic talent show. The young musician is now gearing up for the real rock world and is set to open for Avenged Sevenfold at their upcoming show in Singapore.
