Arjen Lucassen’s Ayreon project took over Tilburg, Holland, for a week-long, 30th Anniversary celebration in September 2025. 15,000 fans from 71 countries experienced this first-hand. Now the rest of the world gets a chance to see this once-in-a-lifetime live spectacle with the release of 30th Anniversary – An Amazing Flight Through Time.

If you are not familiar with Ayreon or any of Arjen Lucassen’s other projects, this is the perfect introduction to the man and his music. If you are a certified Ayreonaut, then this is a must-have for your collection.
Playing songs from throughout Ayreon’s career, alongside songs from Lucassen’s various solo projects, An Amazing Flight Through Time is a once-in-a-lifetime set from a very unique band and an extraordinary band leader.
It is quite difficult to put Ayreon in a tidy journalistic box. The best I can do is describe their music as cinematic rock. There are a myriad of styles contained within Ayreon, progressive rock, classic rock, Metal and folk music, to name but four.
The guest performers have graced Ayreon albums and their stage for the last 30 years. Among the vocalists on stage for this run of shows were Tommy Karevik (Kamelot), Anneke van Giersbergen, Dino Jelusik (Trans Siberian Orchestra / Whitesnake), Maggy Luten, Heather Findlay, Marcela Bovio, Irene Jansen, Wudstik, Damien Wilson (Arena), Robert Soeterboek, Mike Mills (Toehider), and Lucassen himself.
The musicians assembled are all performing at the top of their game. Couple that with exquisite staging and a rabid crowd, and you have something very special indeed.
The show opens with a digital “dream sequencer” robot appearing on the big screen behind the band, welcoming everyone to the 30th Anniversary show. She tells us that we are going through an amazing flight through time.
Throbbing keyboards then lead us into My House On Mars. The mix is perfect, as expected, and you instantly know that you are in for a treat.
24 tracks are played over two sets, and it is just magical.
Ayreon may be a band that have a rabid cult following, but they deserve to be as massive as their sound. I guess Lucassen and the Ayreonauts are happy with the size that the band has reached, as Ayreon are THEIR band.
The thought and planning that went into this Tilburg residency is head-spinning. The show is a feast for the eyes as well as the ears.
We also get a concert film and extras containing a track-by-track breakdown from Lucassen himself. With the show coming in at just under two and a half hours, and the extras at over three and a half hours, nothing has been spared in giving Ayreonauts a high-quality, value live album.
The first single that was released from the album was Loser, from The Human Equation album. Lucassen has this to say about it. “I chose Loser because it’s not just a personal favourite of mine, but a massive highlight for the fans. The moment Jeroen Goossens plays those iconic opening notes on the didgeridoo, the energy in the room explodes.
“This performance truly captures the magic of the night: Mike Mills delivers an incredibly charismatic lead, Joost van den Broek tears through a wild Hammond solo, and Ed Warby provides his signature virtuoso drumming. My absolute favourite part, however, is when Mike lets the crowd take over the first verse. Hearing the audience roar ‘Loser!’ back at the stage is pure goosebumps.”
The entire show is full of goosebump moments, and that is no mean feat. As I mentioned earlier, everyone who took to the stage brought their A game for a truly unforgettable experience.
Arjen Lucassen has a very singular focus when working. The fact that this show weaves songs from multiple concept albums, alongside standalone releases, yet the flow of the gig never felt forced or staggered. That is before we get to the mix and the production.
I reviewed Ayreon’s Electric Castle Live And Other Tales album back in April 2020 and, if anything, this new live album has built on that. Lucassen is an insanely talented songwriter, arranger, musician and producer. If you buy anything that the man has been involved with, you can guarantee music of the highest quality.
This 30th Anniversary live album is the perfect introduction to Ayreon if you have not heard them before. For Ayreon, it is another top-drawer album from the heart and mind of Arjen Lucassen. This will be in my Top Five releases of 2026.
