  • The Other Side is Steven R. Hansen’s EP Out Now

    Good Day Noir Family,
Steven R. Hansen opens his EP The Other Side with “My Own Funeral,” and the track jumps to life with immediate intensity.

His vocal timbre carries a slight punk edge, and the compositional style hints at early 2000s alternative rock.

The production feels crisp and modern, anchoring the song firmly in the present. The balance between atmospheric passages and more energetic bursts reveals strong songwriting instincts.

Then comes “Suspended,” which begins with a strummed guitar colored by a subtle flanger effect. A doubled vocal treatment makes Hansen’s voice feel especially present in the mix. The melodic lines avoid predictability. Harmonic and rhythmic variations give the song depth, and it gradually builds momentum without abandoning its nostalgic rock core. That steady growth keeps the listener engaged.

With “Talking to Myself,” the EP shifts gears. A driving riff injects fresh energy, and soon the rhythm drops into a half-time section that leans fully into punk territory. The track surges forward like a bullet train, delivering urgency and momentum. The melodic structure remains tight and controlled, preventing chaos from overtaking the arrangement. It’s the kind of song that fuels determination at the start of the day.

“Small Delights” closes the EP on a high note. The rhythmic cadence feels infectious, and the chorus invites sing-alongs almost instantly. In fact, it may be the most radio-friendly moment on the record. The hook sticks, and the production polish enhances its accessibility. The track could easily fit within the soundtrack of a film or television series.

In Hansen’s vocal delivery, I sensed echoes of Smash Mouth, along with broader nuances of Sum 41 and Blink 182. Yet he maintains his own identity. The influences appear as subtle shades rather than direct imitations. Overall, The Other Side offers a cohesive blend of punk spirit, alternative melody, and contemporary clarity. It’s a refreshing discovery that deserves attention.

  • Leave Me And Stay Away is Daniel Nicolini’s Single Out Now

    Good Day Noir Family,
Daniel Nicolini’s “Leave Me And Stay Away” opens with a mysterious and slightly nostalgic chord progression that sets a reflective tone.

Leave Me And Stay Away is Daniel Nicolini’s Single Out Now

The guitar lays down a gentle but deliberate pattern, inviting the listener into an emotional landscape that feels intimate and expansive.

Nicolini’s voice enters—sincere, direct, and unfiltered. His delivery carries authenticity, and that honesty becomes the emotional anchor of the track.

The song inspires movement. There’s a subtle urge to grab the car keys and disappear down an open road, letting the melody accompany solitary thoughts. This isn’t just a road song; it’s a carefully structured composition. The harmonic construction reveals sophistication. Verse, pre-chorus, and chorus unfold with fluid transitions, and the dynamics rise and fall naturally. This emotional ebb and flow sustains engagement without feeling forced.

The rhythm plays a crucial role. It cradles the narrative, offering steady support while allowing space for melodic expansion. As the track progresses, additional layers enrich the arrangement. Strings gradually emerge, widening the sonic palette and giving the song a cinematic quality. Background vocals enter subtly, adding depth without overshadowing the lead performance.

I also sensed faint nuances of Pink Floyd, particularly in the chorus. The harmonic lift and atmospheric openness echo that influence. Yet Nicolini never loses his own identity. His phrasing and melodic choices establish a distinct voice that stands apart from comparison.

The arrangement grows with intention. Each added element feels purposeful, enhancing the emotional resonance rather than cluttering the mix. The interplay between instrumentation and vocal lines strengthens the storytelling aspect. The song becomes a space for reflection, a moment to step back and breathe.

“Leave Me And Stay Away” balances introspection and momentum with refined compositional skill. Daniel Nicolini delivers a track that feels personal yet universal, ideal for those quiet drives when you need distance and clarity.

  • Report: Bucharest Deathfest 2026

Bucharest Deathfest kicked off on March 7th, in Quantic club, with Walk Alone, which unfortunately I missed to see, but the show went on with the second band, Vomit Erection, and as the their name suggest, you can already think the genre and the performance that was full of energy, and along with the Bulgarians, the crowd was slowly gathering. Next on, Romania’s Putred, a band that impressed me nicely. The Romanians delivered an amazing, brutal, and classic death metal set, fitting perfectly on the festival’s bill, with the must-be moshpit for extra madness and energy. Big kudos to Putred, a must-see band if you have the occasion. These guys are worth it.

The madness continued with Incineration from Greece, the atmosphere was already on fire, the unfailing moshpit, and crowd surfing too. I gotta mention how responsive and active the crowd was, and with Incineration was just half of the festival going. Afterwards, both Guts and Toxaemia delivered ace performances, with a true death metal sound, and like previous bands that hit the stage, Guts and Toxaemia totally captivated the crowd in full force, killing it to the maximum. More, Toxaemia played a song dedicated to and in the memory of late Entombed’s Lars Petrov.

Three more bands on board, and before saying more about the next performances, I want to mention the presence of a younger generation in large numbers, which makes me say there’s still hope for the scene and these kids today, listening to great metal music, and attending such events. Again, there’s still hope! Let’s continue, not tired yet, with Vulvectomy next on stage, well, here was like another chapter of the evening- Toxaemia’s vocalist, Dennis, joined the Italians on stage to film with his phone, then he placed himself right in the middle of the moshpit. Just imagine how this was, and Vulvectomy was top of the top. I think they could be enough to end this edition of Bucharest Deathfest, and moreover, they were present not just on stage, but before and after at the merch stand with the fans. Vulvectomy was a real madness. This band is also a must-see, for sure.

General Surgery, so to speak, performed a ”surgery” and cut out the stage with lots of energy, still keeping the crowd hooked, and prepared it for the last, and not least band of the evening. BDF closed with some old-school Austrian death metal, Disharmonic Orchestra, the connoisseurs of this band felt, I believe, a little nostalgic too. Why do I say this? The other night, on March 6th, at the Encore club, there was a warm-up gig with Gore Thrower, and Rotheads, and there, one guy came with an old Disharmonic Orchestra cassette tape, and showed it to the band, as they were present at the warm-up gig too. They were like, ” Wow”! The Austrians nailed it till the end, bluntly, and that’s how you call it a perfect evening.

This was the third edition of Bucharest Deathfest that I attended, and this one seemed to be, so far, the best, and the strongest, crowd-wise speaking too. Good news as well, in 2027, this festival will have two days of madness, so stay tuned and check the announcements for next year. As always, Coro, the festival host, made it a great event, with killer bands and great atmosphere. Everyone was satisfied. That’s all I got to say, folks!
