  • Ghost’s ‘Skeletá’ Nominated for Six Swedish Grammis Awards

    Ghost-Shadows-and-Strobes-5

This is almost becoming an annual thing at this point, but Ghost has once again received a number of nominations for this year’s Swedish Grammis awards. But that should be expected when they put out such a kick ass record in Skeletá.

Announced earlier today, the nominations are for the band itself, as well as Tobias Forge and his fellow writers Max Grahn, Vincent Pontare, and Salem Al Fakir. The Swedish Grammi Awards will take place on April 29 at Annexet in Stockholm.

    The nominations are as follows:

    • Årets Artist / Artist Of The Year
    • Årets Album / Album Of The Year
    • Årets Hårdrock/ Metal / Hard Rock & Metal
    • Årets Producent / Producer
    • Årets Kompositör / Songwriter
    • Årets Textförfattare / Lyricist

If you’ve been keeping score, Ghost has been nominated for seven Swedish Grammis in the past, winning the “Hard Rock & Metal” award four times for Infestissumam, Meliora, Popestar EP, and Impera. Only time will tell if Skeletá will be able to make it five wins in that single category.

This news comes just days after Forge announced that he would be taking a long-awaited hiatus from the band to recharge. The band’s been pretty much going non-stop for the last 15 years or so, so the dude deserves some R&R.

  • Track Premiere: Harboured – “Dead Ringer”

Post-black metal trio, Harboured, in spite of the spelling of their moniker, are not from England, Canada or Down Under, places where they like to put a “u” where we Americans don’t. Nope, these are Denverites, and in fact are well established in the Denver metal scene as current members of Allegaeon and Oak, Ash & Thorn. Harboured—Michael Stancel (guitars/synths/vocals), Brandon Michael (bass), Cierra White (drums)—however, offer a different extreme metal take than those bands, as evidenced by the potent mix of post-black metal fury and heavy ’90s alt rock emotional passion on new single, “Dead Ringer,” from their upcoming second full-length, We’re Only the Love That We Lead.

We’re Only the Love That We Lead was produced by by Scott Evans, Harboured and Benjamin Kaplan. Recording and mixing was done by Scott Evans and mastering was done by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege. It’s set for release on May 29 via Lost Future Records. Place your preorder here.

Guitarist/vocalist Michael Stancel described the creation of the new album as such:

“When writing for this record, we really wanted to make something that felt more personal and emotionally attached to us, but didn’t want it to be too ‘heart on your sleeve,’ ‘oversharing’ or ‘whiny ex-boyfriendcore.’ It took me a really long time to figure out how to disguise these things in a way that felt more unique or less obvious. I’ve always had an interest in engineering and infrastructure, specifically the failures of both, and found I could use these failures as metaphors for the failures we have as people, whether that’s in our personal lives, our relationships, or our morality. I felt writing in that way would let me express myself from the heart, without it just being a bunch of songs about people and relationships, like a million records before.

We also wanted to give our sound a clearer direction. Our first release was more on this darker /’blackgaze-y’ sound, and it was great, but I found that this one needed to be something that brings more mood and more depth. I really leaned into my love of alternative/indie bands and brought in elements of that genre into the sound. Often thinking in directions like What would Pheobe Bridgers do if she listened to Failure and Alcest? and trying to make something that I love and maybe other people who don’t listen to a ton of heavy music might love too. I definitely feel we’ve made something that we’re all really proud of and that people will really enjoy and hopefully resonate with.”

  • Phil Anselmo Pushes Back on A.I. Rumors About His Health: “I’m Healthy As a Horse”

    philanselmo_aihealth

We’ve all heard of A.I. fucking up people’s Spotify pages and spreading misinformation, but never both of those uses coming together. Well, that was until recently when a series of A.I. generated posts on social media claimed Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo was diagnosed with blood cancer.

As you might suspect given this post’s headline, it’s total bullshit. At 57 years old, Phil Anselmo hasn’t announced a cancer diagnosis. In fact, he posted a video on his official social media page — which you can watch below — to shut that rumor down, ultimately reassuring fans he’s doing just fine.

“Ladies and gentlemen, Philip H. Anselmo here. There’s an A.I. page that is going bananas about me, and it’s putting out bullshit, bullshit, bullshit. I’m healthy as a horse. There’s incredible stuff going on. Mixing the new Down. King Parrot is coming into town. Performing the new En Minor in the studio, trying to get that finished. There’s a zillion things going on. Anyway, I hope everybody else is healthy, as we are over here. Much love to you, and thank you everyone who wished me a speedy recovery and all that. Come on. Damn A.I. shit.”

As Anslemo said in his video, the dude’s crazy busy as of late, having just finished a long run with the Pantera tribute act. Now he’s got a new Down record in the works and apparently he’s working on new En Minor — which if you haven’t listened to that particular project and like your music downtrodden and sad, you need to listen to En Minor.

Either way, this is just another case that proves that A.I. fuckin’ sucks.
