Two-time Grammy Award winner Tyler Bryant has released a new song, “Screwed & Tattooed,” a track born from a spontaneous studio session with acclaimed songwriter Rodney Crowell.
The song came together organically at the tail end of Bryant producing Crowell’s latest album, Airline Highway. Sitting in Bryant’s studio with a pair of acoustic guitars, the two musicians leaned into their shared appreciation for low down dirty blues. What started as a loose idea quickly evolved into a finished track, recorded less than an hour after Bryant introduced it to friends during a jam session the following day.
Bryant shared the story behind the collaboration:
“Tyler says, “It’s not everyday that you get to make up a tune with a hero. As a Texan, I grew up on Rodney Crowell’s records. My early blues explorations landed 15-year-old me at a party in California where I met Rodney for the first time. I had no idea then that, 19 years later, I’d be producing an album for him. At the tail end of making Rodney’s latest album, ‘Airline Highway,’ we found ourselves sitting in my studio with a couple of acoustic guitars. We both have a deep appreciation for low down dirty blues and when my right thumb started riding the A string of my old Kalamazoo acoustic, Rodney started spitting out lines. We laughed this song into existence.”
Bryant adds, “My friends came over the next afternoon to jam and I pulled out this idea. It was recorded less than an hour later. This is precisely the magic I hoped my studio would inspire for me and other artists. I’ve always been drawn to “in the moment” captures when it comes to recording. Especially now that we have AI breathing down our necks… It’s time to be as real as humanly possible.”
Bryant has long favored recordings that capture immediacy and human connection over studio polish. The creation of “Screwed & Tattooed” reflects that philosophy, preserving the raw feel of musicians creating in real time. In an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and digital precision, Bryant continues to emphasize authenticity and spontaneity in his work.
After years fronting Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown, Bryant is now carving out a distinct path as a solo artist. Releasing music independently has allowed him to follow his instincts without compromise. He describes this new chapter as intuitive, unfiltered, and fully self-directed.
“Screwed & Tattooed” stands as an example of that approach, a blues rooted collaboration built on chemistry, history, and the magic of the moment.
