  • AN NCS VIDEO PREMIERE: TOOMS — “WHITETHORN”

(written by Islander) On May 29th of this year Cursed Monk Records released Karst, the powerful second album from the Irish sludge metal band Tooms. Leading up to the release we premiered a song from it named “Lowlander“. In that context, we described the music as “dismal and disconcerting,” but “galvanic as well as distressing, […]

  • Take Back The Sun Modern Treason Review

Take Back The Sun Modern Treason Review

The song begins with a beautiful guitar note, signaling an adrenaline-infused experience. It’s a guitar-driven anthem that makes you want to raise your fist to the sky. The track mixes classic rock vibes, evoking artists like Alice Cooper, especially in the delivery of the lyrics. Additionally, there are nuances of The Smashing Pumpkins, bringing a ’90s flavor to the overall sound.

Take Back The Sun Modern Treason

“Modern Treason” feels instinctive and liberating. Despite its energetic vibe, it resonates with contemporary issues, reflecting the political instability felt around the world. The song effectively conveys emotions of tension and rebellion. The lyrics inspire, especially propelled by the revolutionary spirit of music.

The solos are magnificent, accompanied by rhythmic and harmonic variations that keep listeners engaged from start to finish. While the song can come across as dystopian, as if the world is spiraling downward, the chorus—enhanced by beautiful backing vocals—creates a sense of longing for revolution. These elements invite listeners to join the fight for change.

Modern Treason – Sound and Atmosphere

The overall energy of the track brings with it a breeze of transformation, one that I recommend everyone experience. This band provides a refreshing breath in a world inundated with artificial intelligence and inauthenticity. Their genuine sound showcases outstanding chemistry among the members, culminating in a remarkable song.

“Modern Treason” serves as a rallying cry for those yearning for upheaval and change. The lyrics strike a balance between raw emotion and technical skill. The musicianship is tight and purpose-driven, enhancing the thematic essence of the piece.

As we navigate through the song, each segment enhances the feeling of urgency. The instrumentation captures chaos and hope, reminiscent of the movements that have shaped music history. The contrasts within the composition reflect the dual nature of our existence, wrestling between despair and hopeful rebellion.

Modern Treason – Performance and Production

The music is undeniably infectious, encouraging listeners to reflect and act. It’s through this connection that the song truly shines, blending serious commentary with rock’s liberating spirit.

Musically, the track is a masterclass in how to blend various influences. It honors the past while pushing forward into new territory. Each chord progression feels intentional, shaped by an overarching desire to contribute meaningfully to the music scene.

The emotional gravity of “Modern Treason” establishes it as a must-listen in today’s climate. It invites discussion and reflection, serving as an anthem of resistance and a beacon of hope.

“Modern Treason” is not just a song but a significant statement. It blends classic rock influences with modern sensibilities, touching on themes of rebellion and hope.

  • Black Bananas Announce New Album Bad Bunch: Hear “Turkey Burgers”

The deathlessly cool underground figure Jennifer Herrema was half of the notorious noise-rock duo Royal Trux, which means she’s been kicking around the weird-ass music universe for decades. Her music isn’t getting any less weird. Herrema got back together with her Royal Trux bandmate Neil Hagerty in 2015, and they released the album White Stuff in 2019, but that reunion turned out to be both chaotic and short-lived. In 2023, Hagerty was charged with three felonies for attacking Denver cops, but those charges have since been dropped. For her part, Herrema is ready to reactivate her old project Black Bananas.

EP Review: Dead Sleep – Repulsion

    Reviewed by Matthew Williams

Like the bastard child of classic thrash and extreme metal, Sweden’s Dead Sleep emerge with an EP that is raw, aggressive and full of punk energy. The trio refuses to stick to any rules, and these 5 songs see the band with a sharper, heavier sound that’s coming directly for you.

Vocalist and bassist Anna Wagner says that “the songs revolve around themes of power, motherhood and society’s long-standing fear of women who step outside imposed rules” and they waste little time getting up to speed on fiery opener “Repulsion”. With drummer Per Olofsson hitting the crap out of those skins, guitarist Marcus Bader plays some scintillating riffs, before the phlegm sounding vocals appear. The interplay around the 3-minute mark makes for joyous listening with a gritty bass line to boot.

A glorious guitar tone comes flying out for the start of “Hell Hath No Fury” and continues to pummel your senses furthermore. It’s a short, punk fuelled blast of rage filled with raucous drum rolls accompanied by darker, venomous lyrics, and then without pausing for breath, they blast your eardrums again with “Children of the Blade”. With lyrics inspired by the biblical myth of King Soloman and the two mothers fighting over a baby, the lead solo has me smiling before they settle into a steady but awesome rhythm that will get heads banging all over the place. It’s not complicated, but it’s focused where it needs to be and more refined to deliver maximum effect.

With drums and guitars swapping positions at the start of “Leech from Cachtice, Wagner’s bass comes to install more evil into the song. They speed up about a minute into the song, and you get that sense of early Venom and black metal with controlled yet over the top solos that have a real presence. The rhythm throughout the song is a great listen and works so well, before we arrive at the final blast, “Bring Me The Head” that has a mighty scream and a chuggy thrash riff that is impressive. Their relentless pace is ramped up further with more blistering guitars and devastating drums as their stripped down and unpolished music is unapologetically brutal.

  • Chelsea Wolfe Share Two New Tracks ‘The Dark’ and ‘Death Is Not The End’

Chelsea Wolfe has returned with her first new music in two years, sharing two tastes of what will become her 9th full-length album.

The two tracks in question follow on from 2024’s ‘She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She‘, and showcases her uniquely gripping sound in some style.

‘Death Is Not The End’ is a true slow-builder, with layer upon layer of delicate tranquility flowing into each other, before a crushing crescendo sends you hurtling into the depths.

Whilst ‘The Dark’ is a country-twinged piece of acoustic storytelling, that strips back everything even further than they already were.

The result of both is absolutely beautiful, the sort of music that stops you in your tracks and lingers on your skin. A glimpse of what is to come, and what is to come is going to be spellbinding.

  • Johanna Samuels – “Blue Vs. Pinkerton”

How timely to be releasing a song called “Blue Vs. Pinkerton” this week! Just a few days ago Olivia Rodrigo sat down with YouTube music critic Anthony Fantano and named Weezer’s blown-out sophomore LP as one of her all-time favorites. Now Johanna Samuels has used the eternal debate between the band’s first two albums to illustrate the teenage search for identity.
