The shadowy Ordo Vampyr Orientis evade expectations and definitions. Like another mysterious American black metal label Wergild, Ordo Vampyr Orientis have no social media and have avoided all attempts to investigate them. They reroute all focus to their music, which ranges from Waltzing symphonic black metal to hypnotic raw black metal and, now, lovesick warlock black metal with Befouled Malediction, whose track “Ritual” we’re premiering today before their debut, Desperate Necromancy, releases at the end of October.

Lovesick is, of course, downplaying the situation on Desperate Necromancy. As the title indicates, the record tells the story of a warlock who haphazardly learns necromancy to bring his loved one back from the dead, only to discover that the resurrection wasn’t without its drawbacks. It’s a classic monkey’s paw tale of which “Ritual” is the inciting action. Much like necromancy itself, the track is part witchcraft and part science. It’s quietly refined, though not to a degree that the raw and tragic aspects are overlooked. The melodies mirror the warlock’s adrenaline as he’s on the verge of bringing his love back to life, with the track’s middle section, in which the percussion nearly dissipates, marking his trepidation. Just by following the structure on “Ritual,” you can deduce which step of the process the warlock is undertaking and his reactions to it. It’s effective storytelling in black metal, putting the genre’s attributes to narrative work.

Desperate Necromancy releases October 30 on Ampwall and Bandcamp. It will be available on vinyl on November 13 via Ixiol Productions and Dawnbreed Records.

Some bands have manifestos. GLIZZ have bad ideas, questionable appetites and apparently just enough available credit to keep recording them.

The Portland duo of drummer Aris Hunter-Wales—of Bewitcher, Soulgrinder and Order of the Gash—and guitarist/bassist/vocalist J. Bennett of Ides of Gemini and Black Mare made their first greasy impression earlier this year with debut EP Grenades. Now, barely seven months later, they’re back with another four-song dose of rock ’n’ roll degeneracy titled, appropriately enough, Fat Lips.

“Think of all the reasons you might have fat lips,” Bennett says. “Maybe you got punched in the mouth. Maybe you’ve got Botox. Maybe you talk too much. Maybe you’re Mick Jagger. They all apply here.”

Recorded in Portland with Matt Taylor of Dry Socket and Hybrid Forms, who also engineered Grenades, Fat Lips finds GLIZZ bringing a few friends along for the damage. Taylor contributes backing vocals to “Kiss It Goodbye” and additional guitar to “Just What I Needed,” while jazz vocalist Jenny Luna joins him on backing vocals for both tracks. Shadowland vocalist Tanya Finder lends her voice to “This Is Getting Old and So Are You.” Sanford Parker, who handled Grenades, once again mixes and masters.

And yes, “Just What I Needed” is exactly what you think it is. GLIZZ close the EP by putting their hands on the Cars classic, because apparently four decades of evidence that Ric Ocasek knew what he was doing wasn’t enough to keep these two away from it.

Hunter-Wales offers perhaps the most useful explanation of what’s going on here:

“Fat Lips is further proof that GLIZZ isn’t a band. It’s a libido with a credit card that’s maxed out. And a hangover. Plus, we do a Cars song!”

Hard to improve on that.

Any Gorillaz performance, like any Gorillaz record, tends to include a whole lot of guest performers. Right now, Damon Albarn and his various cartoon associates are touring North American arenas with Little Simz and Deltron 3030. You can be assured that Simz and Del The Funky Homosapien will join Gorillaz during their headlining set, as will touring staples like De La Soul’s Posdnous and the Pharcyde’s Bootie Brown. Sometimes, a Gorillaz show also includes a surprise or two. You never know when someone like Pusha T might show up.

She’s announcing her new album Howl today, and it’ll be first for her new label home Verve/Interscope — a major leap from Bayonet. The title track is out now, and it shows she’s deserving of the ascent.
