  • R.I.P. Alan ‘Smudger’ Smith

    Alan ‘Smudger’ Smith (26 August 1943 – 4 November 2025)

Beloved roadie, colleague, mentor, and friend.

Alan ‘Smudger’ Smith, an unshakeable presence in the world of live music production and a longtime roadie for The Who, passed away peacefully on 4 November. He was 82.

Born with an instinctive knack for all things mechanical and musical, Smudger found his calling early on the road – long before touring became the highly engineered enterprise it is today. He joined The Who’s crew in the 1970s, becoming part of the tight-knit family that helped deliver the band’s legendary sound to audiences across continents. He was Pete Townshend’s guitar tech in the early 70s before another Alan (Rogan) took over. Smudger could look after, repair and tune a guitar, but couldn’t actually play the instrument! Through the 1970s and into the 80s, Smudger was known for his steady hand, calm mind, and uncanny ability to fix anything – often in the dark, under pressure, and with thousands waiting for the next explosive chord.

Smudger brought this same dedication and expertise to The Who’s production company, ML Executives Ltd based at Shepperton Studios, where, along with Roger Searle, Mick Double, Dick Hayes, Ronnie Turpie, Paula Rosewell and the rest of the team, he looked after The Who’s touring equipment with the same pride he’d carried on the road. He became an essential part of the operation, the person everyone trusted to know the gear, the history, and the standards required for a band whose live shows have always been larger than life. Colleagues remember him being a veritable encyclopaedia of know-how, meticulous in his work, and endlessly generous with his time.

Beyond his technical skill, Smudger will be remembered for his warmth, his wicked sense of humour, and the stories he could tell – usually over a cup of tea, often beginning with “So there we were in [fill in name of city] on the such-and-such tour . . .” He made people feel welcome, whether they were rock legends, fellow crew members, or the newest kid trying to learn the ropes.

Alan ‘Smudger’ Smith is survived by his wife Jennifer, his daughters Mig (above) and Aimee, his family and friends, plus a vast community of musicians and crew whose lives he touched over several remarkable decades in live music. His legacy lives on in countless shows, memories, and the quiet confidence he instilled in those who worked beside him.

The stage won’t be the same without him.

We’ll leave the last word to Peter ‘Dougal’ Butler, Keith Moon’s long-suffering PA . . .

Well, it’s with great sadness that we have lost one of our great road crew guys from the 70’s – Alan ‘Smudger’ Smith. A lovely guy. I recall Pete paid to have his teeth fixed, and we did have some laughs. Rest in peace, Alan. Our thoughts are with you and the family.

  • EPICA Unveils New Single “Avatar – The Final Incarnation” In Support Of Their Upcoming European Tour

Symphonic metal titans Epica proudly release their explosive new single “Avatar – The Final Incarnation”, a track that deals with the final incarnation (Avatar) to rid the world of unrighteousness and restore truth and purity. The single is accompanied by a stunning visualizer featuring artwork taken directly from the band’s forthcoming Epica Oracle Card Set, launching worldwide on January 7th.

Mark Jansen shares insight into the inspiration behind the track: “In Hindu philosophy, Kalki represents the final avatar who restores balance at the end of the age. That idea of breaking free from cycles—through self-realization, detachment from desires, and inner transformation—resonates deeply with me. ‘Avatar’ channels that journey toward liberation, something both powerful and universal.”

Simone Simons adds: “We absolutely can’t wait to kick off the European tour. Sharing the stage with our incredible fans night after night is the heartbeat of what we do, and this new song will definitely warm you up for the journey we’re about to take together.”

From January till March, Epica will embark on ‘The Arcane Dimensions’ European Tour with Amaranthe and Charlotte Wessels’ The Obsession, that brings three of the genre’s most dynamic forces together for an unforgettable live experience.

But more is more: On January 7th, the band will release the Aspiral Oracle, a beautifully crafted deluxe boxset containing a 12 card oracle deck (one card per song title and one extra artist card called ‘The Map’), a handbook with an in-depth rule-sheet and a stunning incense holder, all designed and sculpted by Hedi Xandt who previously created the artwork for Aspiral. This boxset is a true must have that will give you deeper insights into the meaning of all the Aspiral songs, but can also serve as a tool that can give you guidance in your personal journey.

You can now pre-order it here.

  • Modern Life is Strutter’s Single Out Now

    Good Day Noir Family,
“Modern Life” by Strutter carries a moody charm that settles into the listener’s mind with surprising ease.

Modern Life is Strutter’s Single Out Now

The track opens with a guitar tone soaked in chorus, a choice that frames the song with a lightly nostalgic haze.

It feels familiar, as if it sits somewhere between early-2000s alternative and a dusk-lit Americana drive. Moreover, the band leans into that mood with confidence, giving the song a strong identity from the first phrases onward.

The vocal delivery deepens the track’s character. The singer’s lower timbre adds weight to every line, shaping the story with a sense of quiet urgency. Nothing is overstated. Instead, the voice guides us through a landscape that feels introspective but never heavy. As the arrangement grows, the guitars expand around the central melody, creating a feeling of motion that suits the song’s restless energy.

Additionally, the rhythm section deserves attention for its steady pulse. The drums keep the song moving without ever overwhelming the dynamics, while the bass fills the spaces with subtle tension. Together, they provide the backbone for a track that invites listeners to drift, think, and travel—literally or mentally. There is a twilight quality to the entire piece, a sense of being halfway between day and night, future and past, desire and doubt.

The chorus opens the horizon even further. Here, Strutter reveals their ability to build emotion through simplicity: open chords, rising melodies, and a tone that brushes against the style of early Stereophonics without losing originality. The hook sticks with you, not because it shouts, but because it resonates in a deeply human way. It feels like a moment of clarity arriving quietly during a long drive.

“Modern Life” stands out as a thoughtful and atmospheric alternative-rock track, shaped by strong songwriting and an instinctive emotional touch. Strutter show a clear artistic identity, and this single hints at a promising future filled with heartfelt, nocturnal, road-ready music.

  • Swedish Death Metallers LIK Release Video for “They”

    – December 11th, 2025 –

Announce European headlining Tour for March/April 2026!

LIK, the modern-day purveyors of classic Swedish death metal, gloriously return to action with a video for “They“, taken from their latest full-length Necro which was released last April. Directed by the band’s own Joakim Antman, you can check out the video HERE.

LIK will return to stages next March when they kick off the Necrofeeling Over Europe Tour 2026! Comments the band: “In March & April we drag NECRO across European soil – a procession of stinking, rotten, & unspeakable volume. Join the march or be buried beneath it.”

    NECROFEELING OVER EUROPE

Standing loud and proud over so many imitators, Necro is the musical equivalent of a classic shock-horror movie that’s drenched in blood and gore and packed with over-the-top extremities. Delve beyond the zombified cover art created by Stockholm-based tattooist and artist Jens Olsson (Ink Fanatics), Necro serves as a reminder of just how special and exciting the genre is: packed with blood-curdling fantasy stories about war, death, zombies, world apocalypse, and murder all stacked with disgustingly-good rotten riffs.

Once again using uber-producer Lawrence Mackrory (Meshuggah, Katatonia, High Parasite, Decapitated), all music was recorded live over a three-day period, before vocalist/guitarist Tomas Åkvik headed to Uppsala to record his vocals at Mackrory’s Rorysound Studios. Mackrory has worked with LIK – whose name translates to “corpse” in Swedish – since their 2015 debut Mass Funeral Evocation and throughout their Metal Blade Records’ career that started with 2018′s Carnage.

Within Necro‘s ten tracks, LIK has created a seamless album, diverse in tempo but without losing any of their blood-soaked intensity and relentless in-your-face-attitude listeners have come to expect. There are twists and turns that keep LIK on a progressive path without straying from their old-school trademark sounds inspired by the godfathers Dismember, At The Gates and, of course, Entombed.

We didn’t really want to repeat ourselves, but of course we wanted the LIK sound,” explains Åkvik on the writing trajectory of Necro.

This album is fucking crushing! Everything else is shit!” – Nick Holmes, Paradise Lost/Bloodbath

Vicious and raw, sick and heavy, perfect embodiment of the brutality of classic Swedish death metal.” – Matti Kärki, Dismember

This is non-processed death metal magic, just like it was meant to be. It brings me right back to the school bus in the ’90s, where it seemed I discovered a new killer band from Stockholm every week in my Walkman, on my way to school. It often made me want to stand up and bang my head off while in motion and rip the bus seats to shreds. Yet LIK fills a void in today’s death metal scene and sound surprisingly refreshing. This time around, aside from the speed, they also bring extra sludgy heaviness to the necro table. An absolute must have!” – Björn “Speed” Strid, Soilwork

I got to hear the new album Necro from my friends in LIK and what a ferocious onslaught I was presented with! Relentless pounding á la Stockholm City with the perfect nods to the heydays of death metal!” – Jonas Renkse, Katatonia

The essence of Swedish death metal – LIK at their finest! Necro sets the genre’s benchmark for 2025 with killer hook lines, cutting leads, and riffs straight outta hell!” – Ben Liepelt, Endseeker

    LIK:
    Tomas Åkvik – vocals, guitar
    Niklas “Nille” Sandin – guitar
    Chris Barkensjö – drums
    Joakim Antman – bass

  • Richie’s Renegades “Don’t Cry” / “Baby It’s Me” on Polaris

    Richie's Renegades Daily Item 1966 May 13

Richie’s Renegades in the Daily Item, April 17, 1966

Richie’s Renegades came from Lynn, Massachusetts. After winning a state-wide battle of the bands in May, 1966, the group cut a fine single on the Polaris Records label, “Don’t Cry” / “Baby It’s Me” released in August.

    Members included:

    Richie Reynolds – lead vocals
    William Dunn – guitar
    Robert Leger – guitar
    Robert Peck – organ
    Brian Michaels – bass
    Kevin Robichaud – drums

Erik Lindgren’s notes to The Polaris Story CD note that they cut the single at Fleetwood, while alternate versions of the single and a Pepsi commercial “Come Alive” featured on the CD were done at Ace.

The Lynn Daily Item ran photos of the group on April 26 and May 13, 1966:

Richie’s Renegades, a Lynn band, will be one of 18 competing for sate-wide honors tomorrow at Boston Gardens. They are on of a group of winners selected from more than 600 band taking part in local and regional contests, sponsored by the Jaycees.

The accompanying article noted that “Plans are now underway for a national competition next year, the Jaycees said.”

May 16, 1966 notice of their win

The May 16 Daily Item noted that the band won the final competition “which brings with it a $500 cash award, new musical instruments, recording contracts and other awards.

Inscribed to Edlita Adams (Miss Essex County and a Jaycee finals judge) by Billy Dunn, Bob Leger, Bob Reader (?) and Kevin Robichaud.

I found a copy of their record inscribed to Edlita, with four signatures: Bob Leger, Bob Reader [surname correct?], Ken Robichaud, and Billy Duran. Bob Reader isn’t in the lineups I’ve found online, and I read Robichaud’s as Kevin instead of Kenneth.

Kevin Robichaud is the correct spelling, as Lou Ames Music Store ran ads in September and October, 1968 with Kevin’s photo as a drum instructor, “featured with ‘The Playn Jane” and formerly with ‘Richie’s Renegades.’”

I found a notice in the Daily Item on August 25, 1966:

Richie and the Renegades of Lynn … will give two performances at the Pepsi booth as a highlight of the Family Day program at Topsfield Fair on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

The group will autograph their just released recordings “Baby, It’s Me” and “Don’t Cry” and, in addition, will offer autographed photographs.

One of the judges of [the Boston Garden battle] was Miss Edlita Adams, 19, of Lynn, reigning “Miss Essex County.”

That notice, and a couple others I found, list Robert Teck instead of Robert Peck.

The Boston Globe ran a brief item in April, 1967 about the group going to Worcester for the national competition with the same lineup listed as in 1966.

November 24, 1967 notice in Greenville, New Hampshire with William the Wild One, Tall Paul Floyd, and the Young Adults.

A December 20, 1966 notice in the Daily Item ran:

The Lynn Young Democrats held a Christmas party for needy children, highlighted by the appearance of a local band, Richie’s Renegades …

Members of the Renegades, donating their services for the occasion, were Brian Michaels, Bob Leger, Bill Dunn, Bob Peck, Kevin Robichaud, Dick Tarnborini, Bill Barry and Richie Reynolds.

The inclusion of Bill Barry is interesting, as he is also known as William the Wild One, who cut a great 45 on Festival in 1966, supposedly with Richie’s Renegades providing backing. A Fitchburg Sentinal notice mentions the Renegades playing a show with William the Wild One at Appleton Academy in December, 1966, noting that William “toured the country with the Dave Clark Five. He and Reynolds are cousins of Dave Barry, a student at the academy.”

By 1968, Richie’s Renegades became Playn Jane, mentioned in the February 29, 1968 Daily Item:

The third annual Battle of the Bands sponsored by the Lynn Jaycees will be held Saturday night at Classical High.

The competing teenage bands are Danny and the Dreamers, Passing Times, Playn Jane, Psychedelic Innovation, Satisfaction and the Sinders …

Dancing will be allowed during the competition.

Robert Leger passed away on January 7, 2020.

  • My Mind’s A Warzone is Tallboy’s Single Out Now

    Good Day Noir Family,
Tallboy strike hard with My Mind’s A Warzone, delivering a track that feels like stepping through a thin veil between two worlds.

My Mind’s A Warzone is Tallboy’s Single Out Now

One moment you stand in a dim alley, wrapped in a muted hum; the next, the door swings open and a wall of metalcore force hits with zero hesitation.

The contrast is sharp, and Tallboy clearly enjoy playing with that tension.

The opening section carries a foggy, almost industrial breath. However, once the full band erupts, the track reveals its true identity: aggressive, volatile, and fueled by a deep emotional charge. The guitars slice through the mix with precision, while the drums create a heartbeat that never relaxes. Yet the band avoid monotony, since the arrangement constantly shifts. Breaks collapse into sudden surges, and heavier phrases transition into melodic passages that offer short but meaningful releases.

The vocal approach elevates everything. The guttural delivery cuts like broken iron, though the melodic sections introduce an unexpected clarity that widens the emotional field. This balance—violent and fragile at once—gives the song its distinctive character. It also shows a desire to push beyond genre tropes, since the structure never settles into predictable patterns.

Additionally, the track hints at industrial influences. Textures echo the tension-heavy world of Nine Inch Nails, yet the execution remains far more brutal and contemporary. Tallboy are not replicating; they are mutating ideas into their own hybrid form.

Ultimately, My Mind’s A Warzone feels like a controlled demolition. It hits hard, but it also thinks deeply. The band showcase vision, purpose, and a refusal to follow trends. Instead, they aim to unsettle and ignite.

My Mind’s A Warzone is Tallboy’s Single Out Now!

    Ferocious!

TALLBOY are a UK-based alternative metal five-piece known for crushing riffs, atmospheric darkness, and raw, emotive vocals. Blending modern heaviness with a sharp, forward-thinking edge, they deliver a sound that hits hard both on record and on stage.

Their explosive live shows and evolving, boundary-pushing style have quickly marked them as one of the UK’s most promising new forces in heavy music—crafting songs that resonate with anyone looking to fill the void with something louder.

  • The Nibelung Saga is Ratlehole’s Album Out Now

    Good Day Noir Family,
Ratlehole dive into ambitious territory with The Nibelung Saga – A Rock Opera, a project that feels less like a simple album and far more like a sprawling theatrical universe.

The Nibelung Saga is Ratlehole’s Album Out Now

They embrace the structure of classic operatic storytelling yet reimagine it through a modern hard-rock lens enhanced by AI-assisted visuals and textures.

Rather than relying on technology as a crutch, the band use it as a brush to paint a wide mythical canvas while keeping the music grounded in raw human energy.

“The Curse Begins (Chapter 1)” opens the journey with an atmosphere soaked in tension. The guitars rise slowly, almost like war horns echoing across a battered fantasy realm. Because of this mood, you sense the scale of the narrative immediately. There is a medieval grit here, one that foreshadows conflict while letting the vocals lead you through the unfolding prophecy.

Then “Dragonblood (Chapter 2)” erupts with bright, baroque-influenced prog elements. The riffs slash forward while the harmonies grow more fiery. It feels ritualistic, dramatic, and designed to pull you deeper into the mythology. The choir-like passages and metallic accents shape a world where danger and glory coexist.

Later, “Blood and Betrayal (Chapter 4)” hits with incredible force. The tempo surges, the rhythm section drives like a runaway engine, and every musical phrase feels sharpened. Moreover, the band use sudden rhythmic pivots to give the chapter emotional weight. It becomes one of the most intense moments in the saga, almost cinematic in scale.

“Siegfried’s Last Stand (Chapter 7)” shifts the mood toward something sacred. The choral parts echo ancient traditions, calling to mind Wagner and even echoes of Carmina Burana. The song feels like an invocation, preparing the listener for the climax of the tale.

As the saga nears its conclusion, “Twilight of the Gods (Chapter 10)” turns reflective. The tone softens, yet it remains heroic. You can sense the aftermath of battle, the falling embers, and the emotional dust settling after an immense struggle. It operates as the emotional hinge between destruction and renewal.

“Yule of the Nibelungs (Xmas)” closes the album with surprising warmth. Although the arrangement remains dense and ornate, the overall mood leans toward hope. The festive color in the orchestration offers relief after the saga’s darker chapters. Still, the technical solos and triumphant melodic lines keep the operatic style intact, reminding you that this is still part of a larger mythical cycle.

Ratlehole’s work is bold, theatrical, and richly imaginative. The narrative flow, the dynamic arrangements, and the controlled use of AI combine to form an experience that aims far beyond typical rock releases. It is a world-building effort that rewards listeners willing to enter its epic domain.

The Nibelung Saga – A Rock Opera is Ratlehole’s Album Out Now!

    Mythic!

Ratlehole is a virtual metal-rock and multimedia project by Austrian musician Franz Habegger, blending human-written lyrics with modeled voices, algorithmic orchestras, and synthetic guitars. Born in a Vienna rehearsal cellar called “the rat hole,” the project explores the space where composition meets AI.

The Year In Metal Show revisits the best heavy albums issued in 1976!
