  • ALBUM REVIEW: Demon Spell – Blessed Be The Dark

In 2024 a band called Demon Spell released a killer EP called “Evil Nights”. This occult heavy metal coven now present their debut full length album, via Dying Victims Productions on the 24th of April.

Menacing organs begin with an unsettling ambience combined with fuzzy guitars. Shortly after some pounding drums kick us into the onslaught of pure heavy metal thunder with sharp riffs that harken back to the debut Mercyful Fate EP but with their own flavour. The eerie vocals have this funereal and yet piercing feel to them, evoking the old spirits of morbid metal while delivering with total power to match the high-octane instrumentals ripping underneath. There is a really crisp old school mix to this record that fits the band perfectly. Galloping and jolting with energy, there is this wickedly unbound feeling to the music which picks off gloriously where their aforementioned EP left off. Some of the theatrics remind me of Hell, the English band, while sticking with that King Diamond influence that burns so brightly within them. Of course other bands such as Attic, Portrait and Midnight Priest have walked the same path, but to me each is quite different and this is the case with Demon Spell. Their sound is more akin to the EP or debut album “Melissa” than the more polished and melodic works to come after. Bewitching vocals soar atop crushing guitar riffs and excellently varied drumming; this is real heavy metal the way it was supposed to be.

Utilising their effective skills at conjuring this Hammer Horror sort of atmosphere; Demon Spell invokes something sinister and remarkably enjoyable that all headbangers will surely appreciate. There is a direct, no-nonsense approach to these tracks which go straight for the throat rather than wasting time. The shorter running time of the album means every second is used properly. Energy and momentum do not get lost and impact is never dulled. The conciseness definitely being an important factor in this. Back to the songs themselves, they follow a fairly similar format but do so in a way that is enchanting rather than grating. The variety in the vocal pacing and drumming embellishes those power-chord riffs to keep adrenaline flowing while the gritty mix only adds to the authentic feel of the record. Occasionally hitting more doomy moments with full power, these will certainly have some necks breaking before ripping back into the more intricate verses or scolding leads. Definitely a superb example of less sometimes being more, this album is moody, gloomy and effective in conveying majestic and dark metal with no pretences.

A lot of the finer details in the rhythm section such as the bass lines and drum fills give a huge push to the records energy while the vocals and guitars are consistently magical in their occult and eerie presence. Heavy metal and mystical have always gone hand in hand and the way in which Demon Spell craft their material perfectly aligns the two. Some of the slightly faster bits really ramp up the epic feelings on the album while keeping that menacing atmosphere intact. Similarly the solos are full of life and really inject more fury into things. The primitive rocking to the melodious electricity balance gloriously on this triumphant tome of evil and magic. Right ’til the end this album will grab you by the throat and keep you rocking to the macabre ways of old and you’re going to love every minute of it. There is little to say but how enjoyable and killer this record is. No messing around, just pure and simple great heavy metal that has a touch of mystique and a lot of charm to boot.

A scolding cut of classic heavy metal; the genre that cannot be tamed. Hearing the ancient metal of old created so profoundly well in 2026 brings me joy. This record is a ferocious listen that keeps firing on the archaic cylinders of true heavy metal with sparks flying in all directions from start to finish. “Blessed be the Dark” is a haunting and wicked opus of metallic might that old school rockers cannot afford to miss. Having such a mysterious atmosphere while keeping to-the-point is a balance that Demon Spell have nailed on everything they have done and this album is another glorious stride into the underground for them.

    Rating: 8 out of 10.
  • Full Album Stream: Putred –Blestemul Din Adânc

For those who prefer their gore-flecked DM grunted in Romanian, have we got a new release for you. Transylvanian quintet Putred are unleasing a fresh 10-song set of horrific sounds (complete with a Benediction cover) on their upcoming third full-length, Blestemul Din Adânc. Avoiding the journalistically lazy and obvious appeal of resorting to cheap vampire jokes here, we will instead assert that this gruesome fivesome—Filip (vocals), Uriel (guitars), Corina (bass), Denis (guitars), Ficus (drums—are more about the recently disemboweled dead than the living undead. And after unsuccessfully trying to get AI to decipher and translate the lyrics, we’re left only with the conceit that, regardless of the actual lyrical content, death metal sounds pretty brutal in Romanian,

Blestemul Din Adânc was recorded and mixed by Uriel Aguillon at Natorum Demonto Studio, Deva, Romania. Drums were tracked at ZTN Studios, Timișoara, Romania, November, 2025. Mastering was done at Spatial Mastering Studios, London. It’s set for release on CD and digitally on March 20 via Awakening Records. Place your preorder here (Awakening) or here (Bandcamp).

The band offered this enthusiastic statement regarding its latest full-length:

“This album is a manifestation of everything Putred stands for. No polished sound, no comfort, just a wall of sound pushed until it starts to rot. The album moves slowly and violently, dragging the listener into its own nauseating pace. The best way to describe it is as a mix between the brutality and aggression of Repulsie Post-Mortem and the grandiosity of Megalit Al Putrefacției; this time, the sound production feels more natural and organic.”

  • Bloodstock M2TM South Wales Interviews: Avicide East Heat #4 Green Rooms, 21.03.26

Interview With Avicide East Heat #4 Green Rooms, 21.03.26

    1. Please introduce yourself for anyone who may not know you. Tell us a little bit more about you as a band.

We are Avicide, An Alt-Metal/Hardcore band that focuses on Powerful Clean Vocals, Intense Energy, Brutal Breakdowns and, of course, the occasional guttural! We combine the aggressive riffs of hardcore with gothic and morbid lyrics and melodies so, if you’re a metalhead or a goth, we think you’ll enjoy us!

    2. What made you want to participate in the Metal To The Masses South Wales 2026 campaign? Have you had previous experience? Or is this your first time?

The reason we chose Metal to The Masses South Wales is because we played a gig at The Green Rooms recently and genuinely had so much fun that we just had to come back again! We’ve never competed in M2TM before so this will be our debut into the scene and can’t wait to meet everyone else competing!

    3. M2TM is all about supporting your local scene. How important is the local scene to you as a band?

We all believe that the local scene is the most important in any band’s career, since that’s where every band starts out and that’s where you usually find the best people, and have the best time! South Wales is also super special to us since we felt so welcomed at our show in The Green Rooms and want to bring that sense of community along with us, no matter the location.

    4. We have a slightly different set up this year with Heats/Quarters/Semis taking place at Bunkhouse/Green Rooms. Have you played the venue before or is this your first time? Are you excited to get on those stages?

The set-up at The Green Rooms was so impressive when we last played, especially the insane lighting rig, so we are definitely hyped to go back!

    5. What are your expectations from being a part of M2TM?

It’s hard to say what we expect with Metal To The Masses South Wales, as it’s our first time competing, but really we just want to meet more people in the local scene and show all the hard work we’ve put in over the last 6 months that we’ve been a band. We also think the pressure of this sort of competition is so good for building your skills as a band, so overall this will be an amazing learning experience for us.

    6. What would getting to our Day Of Wreckoning final and the possibility of playing Bloodstock Festival 2026 mean to you?

Playing at the Day of Wreckoning Finale or Bloodstock 2026 would genuinely be such an insane achievement for us. Firstly it would be amazing since, obviously, we are all metalheads and would love to play the same stages as some of our idols, but also think it would be so special to bring a light to some of the more serious topics our songs talk about, and hopefully to provide some reassurance to others who’ve gone throw these topics that the metal community is here for them.

    7. We encourage all the bands in M2TM to try and check out the other bands, who are you most looking forward to? Who should your fans also try to catch?

We’ve had a good stalk of all the other bands competing and it’s hard to choose, but we are definitely excited for: Levels of Violence , Excursia and Mould !

    8. Tell us in five words why people should come and see your band?

    Hardcore if it had Depression
