What Did David Ellefson Say About Dave Mustaine Recently?

David Ellefson blasted Dave Mustaine in a new interview, telling the Megadeth leader to “just f* off” while criticizing how his dismissal from the band and songwriting credits were handled.

    TL;DR

    • David Ellefson slammed Dave Mustaine in a new interview, saying “You know what? F* off.”**
    • Ellefson claims Mustaine removed his lyrics and bass performances from Megadeth’s 2022 album
    • The former bassist says his real farewell to the band happened in 2018
    • Ellefson insists there was nothing illegal in the 2021 scandal that led to his firing
    • He says he ultimately chose to “drop the rope” rather than pursue further legal action

A Friendship That Was Once Close

For longtime Megadeth fans, the relationship between David Ellefson and Dave Mustaine has always been complicated.

The two musicians co-founded the band in 1983, helping shape the aggressive technical style that turned Megadeth into one of the defining acts of thrash metal.

Ellefson says there were genuine moments of brotherhood between the two over the years — especially after he rejoined the band in 2010.

“When I went back to Megadeth in 2010, Dave and I were close — we were really close,” Ellefson explained in a recent appearance on the Quemar Un Patrullero podcast.

He described quiet moments away from the stage where the two would simply meet for coffee and talk.

“Those moments were genuine. They were sincere,” he said.

But according to Ellefson, that closeness didn’t last.

Ellefson Says His Contributions Were Removed

The tension became particularly apparent during the recording sessions for Megadeth’s 2022 album The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!.

Ellefson says he could tell Mustaine no longer wanted him involved.

“He didn’t wanna use any of my music,” he said.

At one point, Ellefson wrote what he describes as a ballad featuring guitarist Kiko Loureiro that he believes would have been a strong addition to the album.

The track ultimately never made the record.

He also says he contributed lyrics to what eventually became the song “Soldier On!”, but those contributions were later removed.

Ellefson compared the situation to Mustaine’s own experience after being fired from Metallica in 1983.

“When Dave got fired from Metallica, at least they kept his words and his music and they paid him and gave him credit,” Ellefson said.

He believes the same courtesy was not extended to him.

The 2021 Scandal That Ended His Megadeth Career

Ellefson’s second stint with Megadeth came to an abrupt end in 2021.

Sexually explicit messages and video clips involving the bassist were leaked online, sparking intense controversy and allegations of inappropriate conduct.

Ellefson has repeatedly maintained that nothing illegal occurred.

According to him, the woman involved was 19 years old at the time of their virtual encounter, and he claims the video was recorded and distributed without his consent.

He filed a report with police in Scottsdale, Arizona regarding the alleged unlawful distribution of the footage.

“There’s nothing here,” Ellefson said about the accusations.

He insists the situation was largely fueled by online speculation and misinformation.

    Mustaine’s Comments Still Sting

One of the biggest flashpoints between the two musicians came when Mustaine suggested that a former band member’s past behavior made a reunion impossible.

    Ellefson took that personally.

“You know what? F*** off. Just f*** off,” he said during the podcast.

He argues that nothing he did should prevent him from returning to the band, accusing Mustaine of trying to position himself on moral high ground.

    Legal Battles And Letting Go

The feud between Ellefson and Mustaine is not new.

In 2004, Ellefson filed an $18.5 million lawsuit against Mustaine over financial disputes following Megadeth’s breakup in 2002.

The case was eventually settled out of court, and Ellefson returned to the band in 2010.

Despite everything that has happened since, Ellefson now says he has chosen not to escalate the situation further.

“There’s two ways to win in tug of war,” he said.

“I either pull you over the line or I drop the rope and let you fall on your ass.”

For now, he says he has chosen the latter.

    Moving On From Megadeth

Ellefson believes his true goodbye to the band actually came years earlier.

“My farewell with Megadeth was really in 2018,” he said.

He also considers 2016’s Dystopia to be the last great album he made with the group.

Since leaving the band, Ellefson has launched multiple musical projects and collaborations.

He insists he carries no bitterness toward Megadeth or Mustaine, even if their relationship appears permanently fractured.

“I don’t have bitterness in my heart,” he said.

In his view, leaving the band may have ultimately been freeing.

A Rift That May Never Heal

The story of Megadeth has always been tied to the volatile partnership between Mustaine and Ellefson.

For decades, the two men managed to rebuild their friendship despite lawsuits, breakups, and industry pressure.

But judging by Ellefson’s latest comments, the divide between them now appears deeper than ever.

Check out the podcast on these services:

Watch the video for Tarot here:

“Tarot is the closing track from the album, and also the title track,” says Rob Reed. “It was written towards the end of the making of the album, when we had decided on the concept. I also thought that the album needed a bit of a respite at the end, after five very intense and dense tracks. It features a great vocal performance from Christina and a lovely guitar solo to end the album and hopefully make you want more. There are also two mysterious vocal guests at the end of the track; my fellow Chimpan A sidekick Steve Balsamo, and Cyan/Tiger Moth Tales legend Peter Jones. It’s a treat to hear three of the best vocalists together.”

“We’re doing two intimate shows at the end of April to coincide with the release of the album, which is on April 10. These shows will feature Christina, Chris Fry and myself performing tracks from our back catalogue and new tracks from Tarot. The first half will be acoustic, stripped-backed arrangements and talking about the new album; the second half will have a more electric performance. The evening will open with an acoustic set by Chris Fry performing tracks from his new solo album, along with his brother and Magenta bass player Dan Fry.”

  • A.A. Williams Announces New Album ‘Solstice’

A.A. Williams has unveiled the details of her upcoming new album ‘Solstice’, her first full body of work for new label RPM.

The record is set for release on June 05, and it serves as the follow-up to 2022’s ‘As The Moon Rests’.

The announcement is accompanied by a new track as well, the third to be taken from the album.

That is ‘Hold It Together’, a beautifully patient and stunningly affecting blend of atmospheres. From striking piano leads to euphoric post-rock vibrations, it’s a song that extends the emotions at the core of A.A. Williams and gives them space to breathe, grow, and flourish. It’s the sort of epic that comes so naturally to her, and one that shows how extravagant, delicate and touching this record is destined to be.

Williams had this to say about the track, explaining,“Silence exists where you long for answers, a bleak fragility that you daren’t disturb. Where beauty stood only the faintest glow remains, afraid of smothering it you shrink into a mould of your own making. Your edges dulled, your features disappearing, you put on that brave face not knowing whether you do it to protect others or yourself. You smile, you carry on, feeling everything, showing nothing.”

    It joins ‘Wolves’:

    And ‘Just A Shadow’:

The Summer will see A.A. Williams making her way around Europe for a series of festival shows and support slots.

  • DEVIN TOWNSEND Announces Ambitious, Orchestral Metal Opus “The Moth”; Share Music Video For First Single “Enter The City”

Canadian metal maverick Devin Townsend has built a career on distinct creative worlds—heavy records, atmospheric detours, character-driven releases—each with its own logic and weather system.

His latest release, The Moth, is different. It arrives without a pre-existing template, not as a pivot for novelty’s sake, but as a culmination: a project conceived from the beginning as orchestral, choral, and theatrical in scope, with the scale required to underline the emotional transformation at the heart of the concept.

An album over a decade in the making, The Moth finally arrives on the 29th May 2026. This 24-track record began as a vague vision more than a decade ago. It existed in the back of Devin Townsend’s mind as his “life’s work”. Then, about six years ago, after an acoustic show in Amsterdam, Townsend was approached by the head of the North Netherlands’ Orchestra and Choir with an offer: bring orchestral grandeur to Devin’s extensive discography.

Townsend’s response was immediate—and telling. If those forces were going to be assembled, he wanted to spend them on something new: this original work that had been circling him for years, waiting for a door to open. That was the moment The Moth stopped being an idea and began to become a reality.

Today, to coincide with the announcement, Devin is also pleased to reveal the first introduction to the world of The Moth, in the shape of the track “Enter The City”. The song is accompanied by a video created by Studio Sparks, which you can watch now below.

    Pre-order now here.

As Devin explains, The Moth is “a loose story following someone who realises that old patterns of behaviour are no longer serving them. By digging in and sitting with themselves, an internal conflict is revealed, one they may have been resisting or unconsciously rationalizing for years”, and ‘Enter The City comes towards the beginning of that story arc.

The Moth consists of 3 distinct parts across its release. In addition to the main album, The Moth – The Afterlife highlights the grandeur of the orchestra & choir, in what might be considered a purer version of the The Moth experience. The Moth – The War is a recording of the live musical debut that took place in March 2025 in the Netherlands, showcasing the raw emotion of performing The Moth for the very first time.

If The Moth has a central gravitational theme, Townsend names it plainly: true self-acceptance. Something sturdier than slogans, closer to a practiced willingness to face what is uncomfortable without turning away. As Devin explains: “The most obvious metaphor for change within the concept of this project was a moth: from caterpillar to an entirely different creature—one so drawn to the light that it burns itself away. What remains is immutable—only the spirit.”

At the hardest moments, when abandoning the project might have seemed rational, Townsend points to the team as the decisive factor. A host of incredible musicians and contributors participated throughout the course of this process, as well as the North Netherlands Orchestra & Choir and orchestrators Joseph Stevenson & Niels Bye Nielsen.

Long-time band members Darby Todd, Mike Keneally, and James Leach played a huge part, as well as guests including Steve Vai, Anneke van Giersbergen, Lynn Wu (Ou), and artists Travis Smith & Eliran Kantor, plus key creative consultation from Mike St-Jean.

The technical teams that worked tirelessly included co-mixer Chris Edrich, recording engineers Ben Searles & Jacob Hermann, Atmos mixer Ron Searles, Mastering engineer Troy Glessner, choirs in various countries throughout the world, and peripheral individuals who helped land this behemoth of a plane.

The Moth will be available on several formats, including Ltd Deluxe 3CD+Blu-ray Artbook that includes the album on CD1, The Moth – The Afterlife on CD2 & The Moth – The War (Live) on CD3. The Blu-ray includes the full The Moth – The War live film, as well as Dolby Atmos & High Resolution Stereo Mixes of The Moth and The Moth – The Afterlife. It will also be available as a Limited 2CD Edition (including The Moth-The Afterlife on CD2), Standard CD Jewelcase, and as Gatefold Triple-Gatefold 180g 2LP & Fold-Out LP-booklet, as well as digitally.

  • Six Feet Under Unveil New Album ‘Next To Die’, “Unmistakable Smell of Death” Streaming Now

    sixfeetunder_2026

Next month, seasoned death metal outfit Six Feet Under will release their 15th album Next To Die. Their follow up to 2024’s Killing For Revenge, this new slate of tunes features 12 tracks that guitarist Jack Owen claims pushes the band to a more groove heavy sound while still maintaining their death metal bona fides.

“It started out as an album full of death metal songs with speed and aggression. Then Chris [Barnes] had the brilliant idea to keep half of those death metal songs and add some groovier songs in the vein of the early Six Feet Under material. Chris emphasized tempo, so keeping with the beats per minute for early SFU classics, I wrote a side of tasty groove-laden music with Chris doing all the lyrics.”

When released on April 26, Next To Die will be the third album to feature Owen since he joined the band following his 2017 departure from Cannibal Corpse. According to Barnes, he and Owen worked on the new album separately before coming together in the studio to put everything together.

“We don’t discuss lyrical themes. We each write what we’re feeling. We just write what we find interesting.”

To mark the album announcement, Six Feet Under released the first single, “Unmistakable Smell of Death”. You can check that out in the clip below to check it out.

With 2025 featuring the band’s first domestic tour since 2013, Owen said the new album will do well on tour and that the band can’t wait to get back out there.

“We enjoy being on the road, wherever it is. Every day is different. This album has enough great material to give us the opportunity to play these songs plus lots of our older classics to fans around the world.”

Next To Die will be released on April 26 via Metal Blade Records, but you can preorder your copy today.
