Bay Area punk veterans Rancid are marking three decades of the platinum-certified …And Out Come the Wolves with a sprawling box set, which is up for pre-order now. The package holds two LPs and four seven-inch singles, covering the studio album, a collection of demos and live recordings called Alive, unreleased live material from New York City, out-of-print singles and exclusive memorabilia.
Alive makes its vinyl debut here. It gathers rare demos and live versions of the album’s songs recorded between 1995 and 2016. Two Rancid fans and archivists (@rancidcollector and @rancid_fanatic) helped assemble it, along with material from the band’s own archives. The record features resurfaced demos, cuts from a 1995 BBC session and performances captured in San Francisco, Tokyo, Manchester, Montreal and elsewhere.
The set also includes the previously unreleased Live in NYC, which has “Roots Radical” and “Ruby Soho” recorded in November 1995. Rounding it out are long-out-of-print pressings of “Roots Radical,” “Ruby Soho” and “Timebomb,” which until now have been available only on 2024’s B Sides and C Sides.
…And Out Come the Wolves first came out Aug. 22, 1995, and carried the already established punks to new heights without forcing them to “sell out.” Its Billboard Modern Rock singles “Time Bomb” (No. 8), “Ruby Soho” (No. 13) and “Roots Radical” (No. 27) powered the album to No. 45 on the Billboard 200 and helped kick off the 1990s punk revival. Three decades on, it keeps turning up on “Greatest Punk Albums” lists from outlets such as Rolling Stone, Revolver, Metal Hammer and Loudwire, and is still regarded as one of the genre’s most influential records.
Rancid came out of Berkeley, Calif., and has been a working punk band for more than 25 years. After the breakup of their beloved first band, Operation Ivy, in 1991, founding members Tim Armstrong (vocals, guitar) and Matt Freeman (bass, vocals) set out to build something even better. That became Rancid. The band signed with Epitaph Records and released its self-titled debut, Rancid, in 1993.
Lars Frederiksen (vocals, guitar) joined soon after, since nobody was about to argue with him, and Let’s Go followed in 1994. Then came the platinum-selling …And Out Come the Wolves in 1995, an album you probably remember hearing for the first time. Life Won’t Wait arrived in 1998, and in 2000 Rancid put out a second album titled Rancid, apparently to check whether anyone was paying attention.
Drummer Branden Steineckert came aboard after Indestructible in 2003, completing the current lineup. The band has since released Let the Dominos Fall (2009), Honor Is All We Know (2014) and Tomorrow Never Comes (2023).
Throughout, Rancid has stayed fiercely independent and loyal to its community and to each other. The songs take on political and social issues while mixing in personal stories of love, loss and heartbreak, all delivered with attitude. The band offers its listeners a place where everyone belongs, and by carrying on the spirit of the original punk bands, it has become a legend and an inspiration to the punk bands that followed.
