  • LIVE RECAP: Theory of a Deadman and Sevendust, Co-Headlining The Dead Seven Tour, Made a Stop at The Astro

    On Sunday, August 9, 2026, people packed The Astro, in La Vista, Nebraska, to see Theory of a Deadman and Sevendust, in a co-headline billl, melt their faces with their own brand of rock n roll. It was a memorable night for live music.

    Return to Dust opened the concert. If you follow my writing, you may have noticed that I covered these guys not even a week after at Stir Cove. But I was happy to learn they were still able to play this gig regardless of proximity because they are so great live. They give me hope for the future of rock n roll. Also, I never seen a group of enthusiastic twenty something’s go so hard for the opening act before. It gave be a lot of hope for the future.

    Sevendust was the first of the co-headline. This was my fourth time seeing these guys and they always bring it live. This was my favorite time seeing them live because the pit had these youthful twenty-something year olds that breathed new life into the band that I’d had never seen before in a band like Sevendust. It was quite electric. The whole band was on fire. They had this video board behind them showing these unique visuals. Lead singer Lajon Witherspoon brought out his oldest daughter who’s about to start her first year of college to shout her out. It was such a sweet moment for this dad who got so emotional for his little girl. I saw the kids of the band jamming out to the side, which was pretty cool. It goes to show that this band, through thick and thin, are brothers in arms, that they really enjoy playing with each other since the mid 90s. They have lived so much life, but once they’re playing on stage, it has to feel like being young again. They are what I would call a miracle band that are still doing it. Go check out their latest album, One.

    Theory of a Deadman closed the night out. They played “Sweet Caroline” before they went on to get the crowd going. They are looped in with those Canadian modern rock bands of the 2000s with Nickelback and Three Days Grace. Tyler Connolly is a showman, with his slick black pompadour and his soothing voice. At one point during their set, he was messing with a Polaroid camera, which was interesting. The were all excellent musicians on stage and the crowd knew pretty much every song. They did a cover of Alice In Chains’s “Nutshell” and Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game”, both quite good. I thought it was a solid set from them. I did not feel like a Sunday night in the best way.

  • starbelliedbug Announce New EP Lash: Hear “crayola car”

    The upstart quartet starbelliedbug are from San Francisco, where they make compelling mid-fi dream-pop with a gritty emo/post-hardcore edge. Or at least that’s the sound I’m hearing on “crayola car,” the opening track from their forthcoming Lash EP. The band evolved out of a home recording project from Caitlyn Davis and Chris Reza, and you can hear those DIY origins in the texture of the recording. But what stands out more than the fidelity is the haunting quality of Davis and Reza’s vocals, the bashed-out urgency of Shaye Hesford’s drums, and the beautiful sounds Reza and Hayden Kellam are wringing from their guitars. Now, Shabazz Palaces is essentially Butler’s solo project, though he’s still getting plenty of help in making his records. And now there’s a new record on the way. This fall, Shabazz Palaces will follow the 2024 mini-album Exotic Birds Of Prey and the eight-minute standalone single “Time Knows Me” with a new LP called It’s A Style Sport.

    Swedish heavy metal titans RAM will release their new full-length, titled Against, on October 9th through Metal Blade Records.

    It has been nearly seven years since The Throne Within, an album defined by its spiritual and metaphysical themes. With Against, RAM takes a more grounded approach, focusing on the experience of being pushed beyond reasonable limits and refusing to comply. The album captures that moment of resistance “that fire of defiance, which ultimately defines its title and message,” as the band collectively states.

    For the production, RAM reunited with their longtime collaborator Johan Reiven, who had previously worked with the band on Lightbringer (2009). Without their own studio – having sold Black Path Studios – the band recorded at Studio Recordia in Varberg, Sweden. “At first, I wasn’t really comfortable not being in my own domain,” admits singer Oscar Carlquist. “But Johan is a far better sound tech than me and he did a wonderful job. We recorded the solos in a cool new way, as we set up two amps, one wet with a lot of effects and one dry with no effects. They were both mic’d up separately and they played into the enormous recording room in Recordia that is 150 square meters, where we placed two room mics (left and right).” The approach resulted in a rich, organic sound that enhanced the album’s overall character.

    Musically, both guitarists continue to favor bridge pickups, maintaining a sharp and aggressive tone. The equipment used on Against reflects a classic approach, contributing to a sound that feels both timeless and direct. Sonically, Against was conceived as a return to classic recording philosophies. Drawing inspiration from the early works of Dio, MSG, and Sweet, the goal was to create an honest and unpolished sound. What you hear is what you get! In a music landscape increasingly divided into countless subgenres, the band positions itself deliberately outside of categorization. The title Against itself reinforces the band’s longstanding identity as nonconformists, viewing heavy metal as a form of sonic rebellion.

    “We do not give a fuck about all these new strange subgenres popping up. We try to play heavy metal in its purest form. We try to hang on to the center of that energy, and we are completely uninterested in 99% of the metal scene,” asserts Carlquist.

    As a precursor to the release, RAM delivers the record’s lead single, “Ghost Emperor” and an accompanying video.

    Carlquist comments, “This is the opener of the album, a straightforward classic heavy metal song and pure RAM. Lyrically, it deals with how our power structures exist to conceal the true rulers, the ones we will never see or know, pulling the strings behind the curtain and controlling us all.“

  • Axis: Sova Announce New Album Flowerage: Hear “Blow Up”

    “Blow Up” rips. Axis: Sova’s new release out today, the opening track and lead single from new album Flowerage, is technically a post-punk song, but it’ll almost certainly elicit a “hell yeah” from those who love to rock. Brett Sova, Jeremy Freeze, and Josh Johannpeter lock into a propulsive rhythm and pile on the riffs, like Wire or Mission Of Burma if they were embracing the classic rock playbook rather than defying it. There may even be a whiff of Rush in the mix, but not at the expense of the anxious, urgent energy you’d expect from, say, Devo. “No flash, no flash/ Photography!” Sova bellows on the chorus. “Trigger, trigger/ Warning, warning.”
