North Sea Echoes, the band comprised of vocalist Ray Alder and guitarist Jim Matheos, will release their sophomore album, How to Cast a Shadow, on July 24th via Metal Blade Records.

North Sea Echoes’ identity is further explored and expanded in this album. Matheos explains, “This record is a bit heavier, with several more songs featuring real drums, played by Dennis Leeflang. It wasn’t necessarily intentional or planned, just the way things shaped up and how they emerged this time.”

Alder concurs. “’ I’ll Leave a Light On’ is much heavier than anything on Really Good Terrible Things, the first NSE album. It has a darker, melancholic feel that fits well on this album. I loosely based the lyrics on a character from my favorite sci-fi series. I won’t say which, but they do use the quote ‘out there in the black.’”

From the radio-ready rock of “All That Comes After” to intimate, escalating “A Time of Innocence and Purpose” to the powerful, timeless ballad “Villains or Saints,” How to Cast a Shadow cohesively crosses genres and challenges aural preconceptions.

The music that became the title track inspired lyricist Alder. “When Ray sent his ideas for this one, it immediately stood out for me as a title track,” Matheos says. “A combination of title/lyrics/ imagery, and the song itself being a bit longer and having a lot of the elements of what NSE sounds like made it a natural choice for me.”

North Sea Echoes have been praised for Matheos and Adler “maintaining their distinctive identity throughout, neither relying on proven past endeavors nor abandoning them completely.” Indeed, the band and How to Cast a Shadow use the duo’s shared and separate histories to forge a fresh creative opus. Their credits are the stuff of metal legend: Alder has been the vocalist and main co-writer for prog metal heroes Fates Warning for 37 years, recording 10 albums between 1988 (No Exit) and 2020 (Long Day Good Night). Rounding out his discography are seven albums with Redemption, two solo records, and the band A-Z, which debuted in 2022.

Revered guitar/producer Matheos is a co-founder of Fates Warning, the lineup debuting with 1984’s Night on Bröcken on Metal Blade. In addition to 13 albums with Fates, Matheos launched several solo albums, four LPs alongside former Dream Theater keyboardist Kevin Moore under the name OSI, and Kings of Mercia, which launched in 2022.

In the last couple of years, the ever-prolific Matheos wrote a bunch of material—about 25 songs—that could perhaps wind up in any one of his musical endeavors. The guitarist and singer were ready to work on what would become the second North Sea Echoes album, and “I started sending Ray batches of this material, and he picked ones he wanted to work on,” Matheos says.

Other standout tracks include “Enjoy the View.” “The guitars and drums have this great drive that builds throughout the song,” Alder says. “The combination of quiet verses and heavy choruses made me think (lyrically) of a darker side to some people. Those who would choose numbness over pain.”

“Villains or Saints” is another band favorite, and NSE also feels fortunate that they found the perfect artwork to complement How to Cast a Shadow. Lauded British painter-turned-photographer Chris Friel contributed the cover art. Matheos has worked with Friel in the past (Arch/Matheos, Tuesday the Sky), and while these particular images were initially intended for a previous Tuesday the Sky record, “when we decided the title for this one, we realized those images fit perfectly on How to Cast a Shadow,” Matheos explains.

Reflecting on North Sea Echoes’ sophomore album, the duo says, “I guess you could say that there are elements of everything we do or have done on this album, yet Fates and our various other projects are totally different types of music.” If Really Good Terrible Things kick-started NSE’s career with “hovering subtleties, introspective, thoughtful reflections” and lyrics with “wisdom and authenticity,” How to Cast a Shadow ups the promise of its predecessor. Provocative words of hope, sorrow, and consciousness are paired with Matheos’ equally emotive, varied, and deeply moving guitar work.

As Alder sings on “All Fall Away,” “Days blurring into days while bridges turn to rust, nothing flows beneath just stone and dust / And those times we feel more lost than found, more let go than held are the moments we become ourselves. Let it all fall away, let it all turn to gray / Give back that borrowed time and take off that mask / Then turn to face the path ahead.”

Swedish metal innovators Avatar have unveiled a new standalone single, “Crying Fire”, accompanied by an official video. The track arrives after an extensive touring cycle that followed the release of last year’s Don’t Go In The Forest, which was released on Halloween.

Comprised of vocalist Johannes Eckerström, guitarists Jonas Jarlsby and Tim Öhrström, bassist Henrik Sandelin, and drummer John Alfredsson, Avatar spent the past year taking their latest material across the globe. The band’s touring schedule included a major North American headline run, highlighted by their largest-ever headline show in Mexico City.

Following those dates, Avatar returned to Europe before heading back to North America for another stretch of performances. The U.S. run included appearances at Welcome To Rockville and Sonic Temple, earning praise from music outlets including Ultimate Guitar and Rock Feed. The band is currently back in Europe, where they are opening for Metallica at select stadium shows.

While “Crying Fire” arrives after the release of Don’t Go In The Forest, the song was actually created during the album sessions. According to Johannes Eckerström, the band made a deliberate decision to hold onto the track rather than include it on the record.

“‘Crying Fire’ is very special to all of us. It was written and recorded as part of the Don’t Go In The Forest sessions. When making the final selection for album tracks, this one was a given. But then we started asking ourselves something: What if we saved the best for later? What if we kept this gem away from the world for a while?,” Eckerström explains.

Discussing the song further, the frontman added: “It certainly stands tall on its own. I hear a relentless firestorm of emotions. It hits me in a deeply hidden place, and I hope it does the same for you. I could say a lot about what the song is about, but I’ve learned that sometimes it’s better to get out of the way and simply let it be heard for what it is. The best I can say today is that it’s about enduring pain and loving passionately.”

Rather than serving as an outtake or leftover recording, “Crying Fire” stands as a fully realized piece of music that the band intentionally saved for the right moment. The song carries the dramatic intensity, emotional weight and theatrical edge that have become hallmarks of Avatar‘s sound, making it a natural continuation of the creative path established on Don’t Go In The Forest.

For longtime followers of Avatar, “Crying Fire” offers another example of a band continuing to evolve while remaining unmistakably itself.

Fans of Savatage and Trans-Siberian Orchestra guitarist Chris Caffery will soon have the chance to revisit two key releases from his solo catalog. Metalville has announced reissues of the long out-of-print albums Pins And Needles and Faces, arriving on June 26 and July 30, respectively.

Originally released in 2007, Pins And Needles represented a significant step forward in Chris Caffery‘s solo career. The album highlighted the veteran guitarist’s abilities beyond his work with Savatage and Trans-Siberian Orchestra, establishing him as a songwriter and artist with a distinct creative direction and musical identity.

The reissue offers fans another opportunity to experience a record that showcased Caffery‘s vision while blending his signature guitar work with a range of melodic and heavy metal influences.

Also returning to print is Faces, first released in 2004. The album revealed a more personal side of Chris Caffery, balancing heavy metal intensity with introspective and emotional material. Throughout the record, Caffery explored themes of identity and inner struggle, creating a deeply personal collection of songs.

More than two decades after its original release, Faces continues to be regarded as one of the strongest entries in Chris Caffery‘s solo discography, thanks to its honesty, depth and willingness to expose the artist’s more vulnerable side alongside his heavier musical instincts.

Swedish progressive metal veterans Evergrey have released “The Burning Flame”, the final single from their upcoming fifteenth studio album, Architects Of A New Weave, which arrives on June 5 through Napalm Records.

The new track features a guest appearance from Dark Tranquillity, The Halo Effect, Grand Cadaver, and Cemetery Skyline vocalist Mikael Stanne, whose voice blends seamlessly with that of Evergrey frontman Tom S. Englund. Accompanied by an official music video, “The Burning Flame” showcases the band’s signature mix of melody, atmosphere and progressive heaviness while introducing a fresh dynamic through the pairing of two of Gothenburg’s most recognizable metal voices.

The release comes just ahead of a major opportunity for Evergrey, who will join Iron Maiden as special guests for two dates on the legendary band’s Run For Your Lives World Tour.

On his 77th birthday, legendary keyboardist Rick Wakeman has revealed plans for a major UK tour in early 2027. Joined by the English Rock Ensemble, Rick Wakeman will hit the road for The Wizard Of Prog – Ultimate Highlights Concert Tour, running throughout February and March.

Since reforming The English Rock Ensemble in 2022, Rick Wakeman has steadily expanded the scope of the band’s live performances. What began with two sold-out nights at London’s Palladium evolved into the successful The Return Of The Caped Crusader Parts 1 and 2 tours, helping establish the current lineup as one of the strongest in his long career.

The upcoming trek will be the longest UK tour undertaken by the band to date. The run begins in Brighton on February 17 and continues through Poole, Bristol, Cardiff, Ipswich, Manchester, Edinburgh, Gateshead, Sheffield, Liverpool, Folkestone, Oxford, Southend, London, Birmingham and York before wrapping up in Leicester on March 12. Unlike previous tours that centered around a complete album performance, this show will draw from across Rick Wakeman‘s extensive catalog. Fans can expect selections from landmark releases including Journey To The Centre Of The Earth and The Myths & Legends Of King Arthur & The Knights Of The Round Table, along with material from his solo career and music recorded with Yes. A number of surprises are also planned for the setlist.

The touring lineup remains unchanged from 2025’s Return Of The Caped Crusader Part 2 tour. Alongside Rick Wakeman, the band features Jesse Smith on lead vocals, Adam Wakeman on keyboards, guitars, and backing vocals, Dave Colquhoun on guitars and backing vocals, Lee Pomeroy on bass and backing vocals, Adam Falkner on drums, and backing vocalists Sara Davey, Jo Goldsmith-Eteson, and Jo Marshall.

Fans attending the shows can expect a career-spanning performance covering more than five decades of music. According to Rick Wakeman, the upcoming run carries special significance.

“All tours are special, but this one is really very special,” Rick promises. “I can’t exactly tell you why, but trust me… it is!”

In addition to the tour announcement, Rick Wakeman is preparing to release his definitive autobiography, The Wizard Of Prog, later this year. W.A.S.P. have unveiled a new video trailer for their upcoming 1984 To Headless North American tour, which will feature K.K.’s Priest as special guests. The trek begins on September 10 in California and will run through October 31, covering the United States and Canada.

The tour focuses on material from the band’s first four studio albums, revisiting the era that established W.A.S.P. as one of heavy metal’s most recognizable acts.

According to the band’s announcement: “1984 To Headless”, the fall 2026 North American tour, W.A.S.P. returns playing live in the US and Canada, paying tribute to their first four albums… Live!

A new trailer has been released for Frampton, the upcoming documentary chronicling the life and career of legendary guitarist Peter Frampton.

The two-and-a-half-minute preview features archival photos, vintage performance footage, and interviews with a wide range of musicians and industry figures, including Sheryl Crow, Ringo Starr, Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine, director Cameron Crowe, Alice Cooper, Tommy Shaw of Styx, Nancy Wilson of Heart, Roger Daltreyof The Who, and others.

Frampton follows the British musician’s journey from his breakthrough years to the present day. According to the film’s synopsis: “From the explosive heights of Frampton Comes Alive! to the quiet introspection of his final tour, Frampton is an intimate portrait of a rock icon who soared, stumbled, and rose again.

This feature documentary traces Peter Frampton‘s extraordinary life and career — from his meteoric rise in the 1970s that made him a global sensation, through the turbulent years that tested his artistry, identity, and resilience.

As the roar of stadium crowds faded, Frampton faced the daunting task of rebuilding — reinventing his sound and rediscovering his purpose across solo projects, collaborations, and relentless touring. Directed by longtime Peter Frampton bandleader Rob Arthur, the documentary gives the guitarist the opportunity to tell his story in his own words. The film covers his early days with The Herd and Humble Pie, his emergence as a solo artist, and the massive success that followed during the mid-1970s.

Combining archival material with footage from recent tours, the documentary examines both the highs and challenges of Frampton‘s career while featuring contributions from many of the musicians who shared that era with him.

The official description continues: “Directed by Frampton‘s own longtime bandleader Rob Arthur, the film allows the British musician to recount, in his own words, how he first came to prominence in the bands The Herd and Humble Pie before becoming a solo artist and experiencing a meteoric rise to selling out stadium shows in 1976.

The film is scheduled to premiere on June 4 at the Tribeca Festival in New York City.

Earlier this year, Peter Frampton marked the 50th anniversary of his landmark live release Frampton Comes Alive!. Originally issued in 1976, the album became one of the best-selling live records in history, moving nearly 20 million copies worldwide. To celebrate the milestone, a special Vinylphyle edition was released through A&M/UMe, featuring audio sourced from the original 1975 Doug Sax production master and pressed on 180-gram black vinyl.

Across more than six decades in music, Peter Frampton has built a reputation as one of rock’s most respected guitarists. His achievements include a Grammy Award for Fingerprints in 2007, induction into the Musicians Hall Of Fame in 2014, and the Les Paul Innovation Award at the NAMM TEC Awards in 2019.

Bear McCreary is continuing the story of his symphonic metal project The Singularity with the release of a new album, The Singularity: Ekleipsis, arriving July 31 through Sparks & Shadows Records and Mutant.

The project began in 2024 with the release of The Singularity, a hard rock and metal concept album featuring an impressive lineup of guest performers, including Serj Tankian of System Of A Down, Corey Taylor of Slipknot, Rufus Wainwright, and others.

The upcoming follow-up, The Singularity: Ekleipsis, expands on that narrative. Written primarily by Bear McCreary and his brother Brendan McCreary, the album takes its title from the ancient Greek word for “abandonment” and explores themes centered on perseverance, struggle, and disillusionment.

The record once again brings together a wide range of notable names from the rock and metal worlds. Contributors include Joseph Duplantier (Gojira), Patrick Stump (Fall Out Boy), Claudio Sanchez (Coheed And Cambria), Jens Kidman (Meshuggah), Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy), Tim Henson (Polyphia), Steve Vai, Slash (Guns N’ Roses), Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Stewart Copeland (The Police), and more.

The latest preview of the album is the new track “Cool Kids”, featuring Slash, Duff McKagan, Chad Smith, and Brendan McCreary.

Discussing the song, Bear McCreary said: “‘Cool Kids’ was born when [bassist] Duff McKagan sent me a voice memo of a riff he was messing around with. My ears perked up instantly — his riff was undeniable! So Duff and I went into the studio the next week, along with my brother, vocalist Brendan McCreary, and [drummer] Chad Smith from Red Hot Chili Peppers wrote the song together. We went in with Duff‘s initial riff and our enthusiasm, and walked out with ‘Cool Kids’. When Slash got back into town, he added his signature screaming guitar parts, and there it was.

“‘Cool Kids’ is a song about all of us being proudly who we are, but I wouldn’t blame anybody for assuming the title was inspired by the fact that Brendan and I got to create this song with the coolest kids in rock and roll.”

When The Singularity: Ekleipsis was first unveiled in April, McCreary offered additional insight into the album:

“I need more cinematic metal in my life! The Singularity: Ekleipsis builds upon the musical and narrative themes of my 2024 album The Singularity, and this time around it rocks even harder. My brother, vocalist/producer Brendan McCreary, and I were once again thrilled to partner with a number of inspiring artists for this record, each of whom brought their unique musical personalities and perspectives to the project.

“‘Black Box’, our debut single, was written in collaboration with and features Joe Duplantier, of the iconic band Gojira. It blends my cinematic background with Joe‘s distinctive vocals, harmonized beautifully by the legendary women’s choir the Mystery Of The Bulgarian Voices. While many metal fans know Bear McCreary for his extensive work in film, television, and video games, the composer has steadily expanded his presence in heavy music. After launching his career under the mentorship of legendary composer Elmer Bernstein, McCreary became widely recognized for his score to Battlestar Galactica and has since earned multiple Emmy Awards, BAFTA Awards, Grammy nominations, and International Film Music Critics Association honors.

With The Singularity: Ekleipsis, McCreary continues to bridge cinematic composition and modern metal, assembling another diverse cast of musicians while pushing the project further into heavier territory.

The Who have released the official video for “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, taken from their newly issued live album Live At Eden Project, available now through earMUSIC.

Few rock bands can match the influence and longevity of The Who, and the new release captures a significant performance from the band’s later years.
