  • SLAYER 66 2/3: A Metal Band Biography… 4th Edition By D.X. FERRIS Available Now As Audiobook

The newly revised metal biography Slayer 66 2/3: A Metal Band Biography… Or, How Fkin’ Slayer Kicked Fkin’ @ss is now available in audiobook form. For the 2025 holiday season, this expanded audio edition is being offered exclusively through Bandcamp.

Award-winning journalist D.X. Ferris personally narrates the book, which he has updated, expanded, and reworked following Slayer’s unexpected reunion. The audiobook spans 36.5 hours and includes 12 bonus chapters not found in the paperback edition. The final three chapters focus specifically on the band’s 2025 reunion run, which concluded with a festival performance at Hersheypark in Pennsylvania. At that event, the Los Angeles thrash pioneers headlined over Exodus, Cavalera Conspiracy, Power Trip, Suicidal Tendencies, and Knocked Loose.

The book is still current, explains Ferris. Think of the bonus chapters as European B-sides.

Ferris first released the book in 2013, only months after the death of Slayer co-founder, guitarist, and primary songwriter Jeff Hanneman. At that time, the book carried the title Slayer 66 2/3: The Jeff & Dave Years.

The third edition, released in 2023, totaled 350 pages and included 33 images, a four-page index, and roughly 450 endnotes and research citations. By contrast, the fourth edition, released in 2025, expanded significantly to 639 pages, featuring 70 images, a 10-page index, and 795 endnotes.

“I really put in the work on this version”, says Ferris, who has been named Best Reporter Of The Year by the Ohio Society Of Professional Journalists. “Some days when I was working at home, I would put on a shirt and tie. I felt like I was documenting important history, some of it for the first time. It is a serious subject that deserves professionalism and respect”.

The latest edition offers deeper profiles of the band’s members and collaborators, including Exodus guitarist Gary Holt, who stepped in after Hanneman became ill in 2011. Ferris also interviewed new witnesses, such as Valley Stream, New York record store owner Michael Schutzman of Slipped Disc, who hosted early East Coast in-store appearances. Mellow Man Ace contributes perspective on the racially charged neighborhoods that gave rise to both the pioneering thrash scene and Cypress Hill.

Additional material includes extensive archival research, updated statistics, original fan surveys, and a detailed, data-driven comparison of the careers of the so-called Big Four thrash bands: Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax, alongside Slayer. Version 4.1 of the fourth edition appeared in May 2025, incorporating sources that had emerged only weeks earlier. A recurring feature titled The Rick Rubin Watch tracks key moments involving the band’s longtime producer and label executive, whose work has touched roughly 10 percent of Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame performer inductees.

The unauthorized biography is now available in five formats: a 6×9-inch Uncut edition, an oversized 8.5×11-inch coffee table version, an abridged Long Story Short… and Cheaper edition, a mostly color ebook, and two versions of the expanded audiobook.

Photographs throughout the book come from contributors including Murder In The Front Row co-author Harald Oimen, former Def Jam staffer Tom Tronckoe, and Cameron Edney.

The audiobook itself grew out of Ferris’s long-running podcast Talkin’ Slayer: A Metal Podcast And Half-@Assed Audiobook. Each episode features Ferris reading from the book, presenting exclusive essays, answering listener questions, or sharing updates.

“When the show started, the band was broken up, and it looked like it would remain in the grave”, says Ferris. “The audiobook was almost done. Then they announced the reunion. Things changed. And, as a former Metallica roadie says in The Big Lebowski, New sh*t came to light. It was the perfect opportunity to dig even deeper in Slayer’s long, controversial history”.

For the fourth edition, Ferris rewrote, revised, rearranged, and remastered the entire book. While longer, the new version is structured to be easier to read, with shorter sentences and tighter paragraphs.

“My old writing style was like jazz or ornate Yngwie Malmsteen hot licks”, explains Ferris. “Looking back, that wasn’t the most effective method of communication. Now I try to write short, simple sentences that are like S.O.D. riffs. Short sentences, short chapters… I believe books should be easy to use”.

Listeners can choose between two audiobook editions. The full Uncut version explores the broader history of American thrash metal, placing Slayer within a wider cultural context and examining the Big Four and Elite Eight scenes. The Long Story Short… and cheaper edition focuses more narrowly on Slayer’s chronological story.

As the first pages of the book demonstrate, Slayer is as relevant as ever, says Ferris. It is Slayer’s world. Still. And we’re living in it.

  • JOURNEY’s NEAL SCHON Returns to TV Spotlight for THE VOICE Season 28 Finale

Journey guitarist Neal Schon has confirmed that he will appear on the season 28 finale of NBC’s singing competition The Voice, airing Tuesday, December 16 at 9 p.m. ET.

Schon shared the news on Sunday, December 14, via social media, explaining that he will perform alongside “members of the current Journey touring band” as part of the group’s efforts to promote Journey’s upcoming tour. He later clarified which musicians would be joining him onstage, noting that drummer and vocalist Deen Castronovo, keyboardist and vocalist Jason Derlatka, and bassist Todd Jensen will be part of the performance. Schon also explained that keyboardist Jonathan Cain and lead singer Arnel Pineda were unable to participate.

In his post, Schon addressed why he accepted this appearance after a period away from public performances: “There were many other great TV opportunities that I had to turn down. I want to work and promote after being off for close to a year”.

According to People, Schon and the participating members of Journey will perform a medley of some of the band’s best-known songs, including “Lights,” “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’,” and “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

The performance will also feature appearances from The Voice coaches Michael Bublé, Snoop Dogg, and Reba McEntire, along with several fan-favorite artists from season 28.

This televised appearance follows the recent announcement of Journey’s large-scale Final Frontier Tour, scheduled to run across North America in 2026. In November, Schon, now 71, referred to the tour as a meaningful farewell to longtime supporters.

“We’re pulling out all the stops with a brand-new production — the hits, the deep cuts, the energy, the spectacle. It’s a full-circle celebration of the music that’s brought us all together, he said in a statement. As its founding member, I carry the Journey torch to this day, wherever I go. The sentiment and spirit of the band will always remain.

While this marks a farewell to one powerful chapter of the Journey we’ve shared, I want everyone to know I’m not done. Music is still burning strong inside me, and there are new creative horizons ahead. This tour is both a thank you and the beginning of what’s next”, concluded his statement.

The Final Frontier Tour lineup will include founding guitarist Schon, keyboardist and backing vocalist Jonathan Cain, lead vocalist Arnel Pineda, keyboardist and vocalist Jason Derlatka, drummer and vocalist Deen Castronovo, and bassist Todd Jensen.

  • JOEL HOEKSTRA’s 13 Shares Second Single “You Can Give” From Upcoming Solo Album “From The Fade”

Guitarist Joel Hoekstra, known for his work with Whitesnake, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and Revolution Saints, has announced the next chapter in his solo project. The fourth album from Joel Hoekstra’s 13, From The Fade, is set for release on February 27, 2026 through Frontiers Music Srl.

For the new record, Hoekstra once again teamed up with a lineup of seasoned rock musicians. The sessions feature drummer Vinny Appice of Black Sabbath and Dio, bassist Tony Franklin from The Firm and Blue Murder, keyboardist Derek Sherinian of Dream Theater and Sons Of Apollo, and vocalist Girish Pradhan, best known for Girish And The Chronicles and The Nail.

The band has already shared a taste of the album with the release of a music video for the second single, “You Can Give”, which appears on From The Fade.

Hoekstra explained the song’s approach and meaning in detail, focusing on both its sound and message: “”You Can Give” is a heavy, riff-driven track. Although some of the riffs could be described as metal, it still falls under the category of melodic hard rock. Vinny Appice and Tony Franklin do an amazing job laying out a strong, creative foundation. Girish Pradhan delivers a powerful, emotional vocal performance while Derek Sherinian and Jeff Scott Soto provide the perfect complimentary parts on keys and backing vocals respectively. Lyrically, the song is based on music itself singing to me and essentially highlights what can be the downside of an attempt to maintain a strong work ethic”.

Musically, From The Fade leans on a mix of classic hard rock and modern melodic metal. The album emphasizes sharp arrangements, technical skill, and performances that carry a strong emotional edge. Each song reflects Hoekstra’s established writing style, drawing from traditional influences while still aiming for a current and forward-looking sound.

Hoekstra’s career outside this project has remained just as active. He has previously released three instrumental solo albums along with three well-received records under Joel Hoekstra’s 13. More recently, he appeared as a guest guitarist on the “hair metal” episode of Dancing With The Stars and performed with Cher during her Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction as well as the SNL 50 homecoming concert.

    From The Fade recording lineup:

    Joel Hoekstra: Guitars
    Girish Pradhan: Lead Vocals
    Vinny Appice: Drums
    Tony Franklin: Bass
    Derek Sherinian: Keyboards
    Jeff Scott Soto: Backing Vocals

  • After 13 Years Finnish Metallers BATTLE BEAST Parts Ways With Singer NOORA LOUHIMO

Finnish metal group Battle Beast has confirmed a major lineup change, announcing that longtime vocalist Noora Louhimo has officially exited the band.

The update was shared earlier today, Monday, December 15, through the band’s social media channels, where the remaining members addressed the split directly and at length. In their message, they explained the reasons behind the decision and what it means going forward.

“After six albums and 13 incredible years together, we announce that Noora Louhimo is leaving Battle Beast to focus on her solo career. While we are saddened by her departure, we fully support her decision to pursue new creative paths — something she hasn’t been able to explore wholeheartedly with the demanding schedule of Battle Beast“.

“We are deeply thankful for the music, the tours, and the magic we created together. These memories will never be tarnished nor forgotten, and we wish Noora nothing but success and happiness on her path forward”.

“We know you — our fans — will miss Noora as much as we do. But rest assured: the flight of Battle Beast continues, and so does Noora’s, now simply on a different trajectory”.

“A new era begins. We will announce the new voice of Battle Beast tomorrow on December 16th. With gratitude and love, Noora, Janne, Eero, Juuso, Joona & Pyry“.

Shortly after the band’s announcement, Noora Louhimo also shared her own statement, reflecting on her time with the group and the reasons behind her decision to move on.

“For 13 years I got to grow, learn, develop and explore with Battle Beast who I am as a musician and as a person. And now my heart desires more adventures, and flying with my own wings towards my dreams that I can only pursue if I give them my full attention. Life is full of different eras and now it is time for a new one. I am forever grateful and love Battle Beast and our fans. This is not the end, this is a beginning of a new adventure for both of us. See you soon Little Beasts!”

While the departure marks the end of a long-running chapter for Battle Beast, both sides have made it clear that the split is amicable. Fans won’t have to wait long for the next development, as the band has already confirmed that its new vocalist will be revealed on December 16.

  • MIKE PORTNOY Says DREAM THEATER “Will Start Thinking About A New Album” After Summer Of 2026

In a new chat with Troy Culpan from Australia’s May The Rock Be With You, Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy opened up about being back on the road with the band after more than a decade away.

When asked whether the comeback has felt “seamless,” Mike Portnoy said (via Blabbermouth): “It was seamless. To me, this was not just rejoining an old band; this was kind of coming home to my family. After 40 years and forming this band when we were teenagers, it’s more than just a band. We’ve lived life together. We’ve been to each other’s weddings and seen our kids grow up together, and we’ve had all these life experiences together. So coming back home to it, it was pretty seamless.”

“There were kind of baby steps that led here, which also made the transition that much more comfortable. I did [Dream Theater guitarist] John Petrucci’s solo album and tour, and then we did a Liquid Tension Experiment album with me, John, Jordan [Rudess, Dream Theater keyboardist], and Tony Levin. So there were these kinds of little steps that led to finally coming back to Dream Theater. So by the time I came back full-time to Dream Theater, it just felt like coming home to a family,” he added.

He also explained how his return influenced the writing and recording of the band’s latest release, 2025’s Parasomnia: “Well, we were definitely inspired writing together. We hadn’t written and recorded an album together since Black Clouds & Silver Linings, which came out in 2009, but we made it in 2008. So it had been 15 years since we had written and recorded an album together. So we were very inspired being together again and having that chemistry, that artistic and creative chemistry that we always had. And it was immediately there once we started working on the new album.”

Asked if the band is already mapping out what comes after Parasomnia — or if fans will “have to wait a little while”—Portnoy pointed to how long the current run has been: “Well, we have to wait, ’cause it’s been a long tour. We’ve been out for a year now at this point. We started in October of 2024. And here we are, a year later now, and by the time we get down to Australia [in February 2026] and wrap up the tour cycle a few months after that, it’ll have been a year and a half on the road. So, that’s the focus right now. But once the tour cycle wraps and concludes by next spring or so, we’ll probably take the summer off, ’cause it’s been a long road, and then start thinking about a new album after that.”

With Dream Theater currently celebrating four decades as a band on its 40th-anniversary tour (launched in late 2024), Portnoy was asked whether that milestone brings “pressure” or if it’s “more of a celebration.”

His answer was direct: “It’s a celebration. There’s no pressure. I mean, for me, it’s surreal that it’s been 40 years since we started this band. We were teenagers at college, Berklee College Of Music, back in 1985, and here we are 40 years later. We’ve been around the world dozens and dozens of times, and it’s just been quite a journey and quite a trip. And if anything, it’s just more surreal than anything. It’s just hard to believe how quickly time has flown.”

He also addressed the “discussions” that go into building the setlist for this tour, saying the process is more straightforward than people might assume: “Well, there’s not really any discussion. Those guys trust that in my lap. I’ve always been the guy who wrote the setlist in the band, at least in my time here, and for me, writing the setlist for this 40th-anniversary tour was actually easier than you would think. Coming back to the band after not having been in the band for over 15 years, whatever it’s been, it was all a fresh, clean slate for me to work with. It wasn’t like, ‘Oh, I played this song a billion times over the last couple of years.’ I hadn’t played any of these songs in so long. So for me, I was able to write with a clean slate.

“The setlist we’re going to be doing when we come down [to Australia] is slightly different than the one we’ve been doing throughout the rest of the world, because when we started the 40th-anniversary tour, we spent the first six to eight months on tour just concentrating on that,” Portnoy explained.

“But since then, the last few months we’ve been playing the new album, Parasomnia, in its entirety. So when we come down to Australia, it’s kind of gonna be a combination of the two. It’ll be a heavyweight of the 40th anniversary and the full catalog stuff, but we also wanna play a bit more of the Parasomnia album than we had, just because it’s so fresh to us, and it’s the only opportunity that the Australian fans will have to hear those songs. So it’ll be a kind of a combination of the two,” he concluded.

Dream Theater played its first show with Mike Portnoy in 14 years on October 20, 2024, at London’s O2 Arena. A co-founder of the group, Portnoy originally appeared on 10 studio albums over two decades, starting with When Dream And Day Unite and running through Black Clouds & Silver Linings, before leaving in 2010. He officially returned in October 2023, following the band’s long run with Mike Mangini, who handled drums across five studio releases and the tours that followed.

  • EMBERS OF DAWN Shares New Single “Shadow of Her Veil” From Their Forthcoming Album

Embers of Dawn unveil their newest single “Shadow of Her Veil” a track that walks the line between heavy gothic rock and doom metal with a sound that feels both timeless and unrelenting. Early listeners have compared it to a modern day Sisters of Mercy tune, capturing a haunting blend of gothic atmosphere and doom driven weight. Echoes of Type O Negative and Paradise Lost also pulse through the track, creating a dark immersive soundscape that lingers long after the final note.

“Shadow of Her Veil” explores themes of sorrow, reflection, and heavy beauty. Lyrically, the song delves into the feeling of being haunted by the past by memories by expectations and by the versions of people we hold onto even when they are no longer present. It is a meditation on loss and identity, portraying the struggle of living with memory and expectation, and the sense of being followed by someone’s lingering presence while trying to understand oneself in the aftermath.

With its brooding atmosphere and powerful emotional weight “Shadow of Her Veil” stands as one of Embers of Dawn’s most evocative works to date and offers a compelling preview of what awaits on their forthcoming album arriving in 2026.

Formed in 2022, Embers of Dawn is a genre-defying metal project born out of Jacksonville, Florida and Santa Barbara, California. The band blends elements of industrial, gothic, melodic death metal, and cyber-metal to create a sound that is both cinematic and punishing. Known for their thematic focus on alienation, modern decay, and emotional detachment, Embers of Dawn delivers music that is as introspective as it is aggressive.

The band’s music features cold, mechanical precision layered with dark melodic textures, drawing influence from acts like Pain, Dark Tranquillity, Ministry, Fear Factory, Rammstein, Static-X, Rob Zombie, Arch Enemy, and Type O Negative. With each release, they continue to explore new sonic territory, balancing technicality with atmosphere, brutality with beauty.

Their upcoming debut album Infernal Culture features drums by Adrain Erlandsson (At the Gates, Cradle of Filth, Paradise Lost, The Haunted), adding an explosive edge to their already dynamic sound.

  • AOR Supergroup TRANSATLANTIC RADIO Announces Debut Album “Midnight Transmission”

Transatlantic Radio, the international AOR supergroup based in Los Angeles, are pleased to announce the release of their debut album Midnight Transmission, out on February 20, 2026, via Frontiers Music Srl.

The band also share the first single, “Wide Awake”, along with an official video, available below. It is by far the heaviest song on the record, with lyrics about reclaiming one’s confidence after a toxic relationship. The song was written by Victor Brodén and Mattias Osbäck and it features a blazing guest guitar solo by Steve Brown (Trixter, Tokyo Motor Fist).

Victor Brodén commented: “We couldn’t be more excited for people to hear the first single, a serious swift kick to the rear in the hard rock vein with a much less serious video we had so much fun making. It shows the heavier side of the band, and it balances out other songs on our album like “Fever Dream”, which comes more from a synthwave place. We can’t wait for all AOR lovers to hear all of it!”

Brodén continued: “The completion of this album is a love letter to the music that shaped my life, musically and otherwise. The guys in this band took what was a casual idea and turned it into something beyond my wildest dreams. Mattias Osbäck is truly one of the greatest rock voices of this generation with a rough edge that brings our big, sweeping melodies to life and gives them attitude”.

RJ Ronquillo, on lead guitar, is a legend in his own right and a role model for guitarists around the world as well as one of the world’s most watched six-string heroes with his YouTube channel”, he continued. “His work on this album makes me grin ear to ear. Chris Reeve on drums is one of the most sought-after touring drummers in the world right now, and a bass player’s dream come true. Him agreeing to join this project is still mind boggling to me. Fred Kron on keyboards, my partner in production for this project, is nothing short of a wizard. There would be no Transatlantic Radio without his invaluable input, otherworldly mixes, and his ability to sprinkle magic dust on all of these songs. This is the band I could never have imagined being in growing up, and this is the record I always dreamed of making”.

An inspired celebration of classic AOR with a fresh, modern pulse, Midnight Transmission marks the official album debut of Transatlantic Radio, a truly international band founded by Victor Brodén, a Swedish-born bassist and producer now based in Los Angeles.

Conceived during the isolation of the 2020 lockdown, the project was born out of a desire to bring timeless melodic rock back into the spotlight – with a lineup as global as their sound. Fronted by powerhouse Swedish vocalist Mattias Osbäck and featuring American guitarist R.J. Ronquillo (known for his work with Ricky Martin, Santana, Stevie Wonder, and Stone Sour), the band blends European sensibility with American fire.

The lush keyboards of Fred Kron – who had his work featured in Anchorman 2 and High School Musical 2, and longtime member of the Jimmy Kimmel Live! band – add cinematic depth and vintage flair. Behind the kit is Chris Reeve, drummer for Filter and Avril Lavigne, whose dynamic style gives the album its drive and precision. At the center of it all is Brodén himself, anchoring the songs with groove, vision, and a deep understanding of the genre’s melodic soul.

Following a string of well-received singles and video releases, Transatlantic Radio made their live debut at the Malmö Melodic Festival 2024, where their sound and presence confirmed that this is more than just a studio project – it’s a band with heart, muscle, and chemistry.

Musically, Midnight Transmission is a love letter to the 80’s giants of the genre – Foreigner, Toto, Danger Danger, Starship – but it’s no nostalgia act. Each track balances polish with punch, fusing massive choruses, slick arrangements, and emotionally charged performances with crisp, contemporary production.

Packed with arena-ready anthems, the album showcases a band fully aware of their influences, yet unafraid to carve their own path forward. Midnight Transmission is more than a debut – it’s a statement: melodic rock is alive, and Transatlantic Radio is here to carry the signal.

    Transatlantic Radio Line Up:

Mattias Osbäck: Lead and Background Vocals
    RJ Ronquillo: Guitar
    Victor Brodén: Bass
    Fred Kron: Keyboards
    Chris Reeve: Drums

  • VISIONS OF ATLANTIS Share Latest Music Video For “Pirates & Kings” Featuring WARKINGS

A new collaboration is setting the stage for one of 2026’s most anticipated metal tours. Visions Of Atlantis and Warkings have joined forces for a shared single titled “Pirates & Kings”, released ahead of their co-headline run of the same name. The track blends the strengths of both groups, combining dual vocals with soaring, triumphant lyrics. It launches directly into a driving hook as the two bands craft what feels like a modern battle anthem. “Pirates & Kings” heats up the fight – be brave or be gone.”

The partnership arrives just in time for their upcoming “Pirates & Kings Over Europe” Tour, which begins February 5, 2026. The journey kicks off in Pratteln, Switzerland, and brings the two acts to 21 cities throughout Europe as they continue building their shared musical identity.

Clémentine Delauney of Visions Of Atlantis offered insight into the themes fueling the new track. She explained: “This is no longer a time for division or competition. When threats and tensions rise, the answer is to unite and become allies.”

She continued by addressing the broader mood as the year closes: “This year ends with fear and dark projections; next year is about showing the right response. Tyrants will not prevail, manipulation will not work. We will see through the smoke screen and claim our own truth.”

Elaborating further on the idea of solidarity, she added: “We believe that unity is strength. This is a time for collaboration, for opening ourselves to others, and for gathering like-minded souls. We can face anything when we stand with our tribe and our tribe is growing. We’re welcoming new warriors and shield-maidens aboard. “Pirates and Kings” are launching the movement, leading the charge. Now it’s your turn to join the call. Brave your fear, bring a friend, and reserve your seat for the most epic adventure, a place where a new world is forged, where courage is honored, where emotions run deep, and where your power is real.”

Warkings echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the need for unity across kingdoms and seas. They stated: “When the tides of chaos swell and the winds whisper of war, the kings must look beyond their own thrones. Rock fans are in for a surprising reunion as Creed and Limp Bizkit, two multi-platinum acts with a famously tense history dating back to the early 2000s, prepare to headline the third annual Summer Of ’99 And Beyond Festival. The event takes place Saturday, July 18, and Sunday, July 19, at the Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre in Tinley Park, Illinois.

The festival, now in its third consecutive year and coming off two previous sell-outs, once again brings together an extensive lineup of rock heavyweights and emerging acts. On Saturday, July 18, Limp Bizkit leads the “Higher” main stage, joined by Cypress Hill, Sevendust, Kittie, and Puddle Of Mudd. The “Are You Ready” side stage will showcase Magnolia Park, The Pretty Wild, Slay Squad, and several others.

Sunday, July 19, shifts the spotlight to Creed, who will close out the festival with a main-stage bill that includes Bush, Mammoth, Candlebox, and Hoobastank. Day two of the “Are You Ready” side stage will feature sets from Sleep Theory, Big Wreck, The Verve Pipe, and Ashes Of Billy.

Two-day passes go on sale beginning with the artist presale on Tuesday, December 16 at 10 a.m. CST. Additional presales roll out through the week, with general onsale opening Friday, December 19 at 10 a.m. CST HERE.

Fans seeking an elevated experience can opt for VIP upgrades, which include access to a private lounge with specialty bars, an exclusive merchandise area, commemorative laminate, charging stations, and a 360-degree photo booth. VIP ticketholders will also receive Red Carpet Entry with a photo opportunity, concierge text support throughout the weekend, and additional perks designed to enhance the festival atmosphere.

As anticipation builds, the Summer Of ’99 And Beyond Festival continues to cement its reputation as a must-attend event for dedicated rock listeners — and this year, the reunion of Creed and Limp Bizkit is set to make it the most talked-about edition yet.
