  • JAY WEINBERG Announces Departure From SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, Explains The Reasons For His Exit

Former Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg has officially wrapped his run behind the kit for Suicidal Tendencies, ending a stint that covered roughly a year and a half of shows with the crossover legends.

Jay Weinberg posted a photo dump on Instagram looking back at the run and laid out why he is moving on: a packed start to 2026, a baby on the way, and time set aside for personal creative work. He also made it clear the split is respectful, with a lot of love for the band, the crew, and the diehards he met on the road.

“As an exciting and busy 2026 takes shape, I’d like to thank @suicidaltendencies (Suicidal Tendencies) for bringing me on board for an incredible year and a half of shows! What an absolute blast,” Weinberg wrote.

“With @chloweinberg’s & my first child on the way, I’ve been dedicating time to passion projects like @portraitsofanapparition (Portraits Of An Apparition), a growing series of collaborations, finally building a proper at-home creative space, and some new in-the-works projects that I can’t quite announce just yet. Although there’s a lot of work left to complete over the next five months, it’s been a joy to commit to finally getting these things across their artistic finish lines before my focus naturally shifts to becoming a first-time father,” he continued.

“Though I won’t be jamming with the fellas, I can’t possibly overstate the love and respect I have for them, the Suicidal Army and extended family, and all the cyco fans I’ve met across six continents playing shows with one of my favorite bands! Mike, Dean, @benweinman (Ben Weinman), and @tyetru (Tye Trujillo): you guys picked up a friend when he was down and gave him the opportunity to truly feel the message of “You Can’t Bring Me Down” at a time when he needed it the most. I can’t thank you enough for that, and I can’t wait to see what you all do next,” he added.

“I quite literally can’t conceive of my life as a drummer without the profound influence of Suicidal Tendencies. So many of my drumming heroes have added to the historic legacy of this band, and it’s the honor of a lifetime to contribute to it myself in some way. “To our amazing crew mates @deathtotravis @chris.waiau @coreykoniz @jonrechsteiner @gallowsdrums @ssamhaven @chuckzillathekilla @bradhinds @mrsn_th @rafael_galbes @andrekbelo @andrewrmrtaylor, Brendan, and Mathieu — thank you, guys, so much for everything! ST for life!”

Suicidal Tendencies’ most recent lineup around Jay Weinberg included singer Mike Muir, lead guitarist Dean Pleasants, rhythm guitarist Ben Weinman (also known for The Dillinger Escape Plan), and bassist Tye Trujillo (son of Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo).

Jay Weinberg first hit the stage with Suicidal Tendencies in March 2024 in Osaka, Japan, and spent the run hammering out the band’s catalog in front of crowds across multiple continents.

  • Review: Iskariot “Zelot” [Running Wild Productions]

    Stahlstadt Metal par excellence…

Linz is not only one of the major cities in Austria, but it’s also a veritable spawning ground for metallic talent in a variety of shapes and forms; now this exciting concoction here might actually be one of the city’s finest offerings in recent years. Iskariot was just formed a few years ago, but has already delivered an impressive second EP with Zelot. Rooted in the rather loosely defined genre description of blackened death metal, this 25-minute mini-opus switches gears and influences pretty regularly, with a few more obvious references poking through the perfectly adequate mix.

Opener „Lied der Stille“ grabs some old-school Mediterranean black metal tropes and weaves them into a splendid mixture of early Mercyful Fate motifs, tastefully simplistic, harmonized palm-muted grooves, and atmospheric tremolo-picked melodies reminiscent of that other band with an „…Iscariot“ in their moniker. The inclusion of a high/low double attack in the vocal department further increases the difficulties in shoehorning this band into pre-baked categories. Some more modern elements pop up later, with „Verlorene Welt“ offering Gojira-like dynamic chugs in the rhythm attack and the tribalistic drumming in „Zeit“ trading blows with Blut aus Nord-esque tremolo sadness, painting a bleak picture, put to words in well-versed German poetry.

Generally, as the record progresses, the mood shifts into darker territory with every passing minute, leading into the great closer – the aforementioned „Zeit“. The lyrics – while never particularly uplifting overall – now deal with the gruesome passing of time and the metaphysical effects on the ailing body and mind. The quality songwriting turns this into a well-measured blend of epicism and depressive undertones, right until the final riffs and drum kicks ultimately nail the coffin shut.

Not every single note or chord progression on Zelot might seem fresh and entirely original, but the way Iscariot has crafted these songs is highly engaging, and the EP breezes by in what feels like mere minutes. Their best ideas and motifs are probably packed into the opener and closer, but not a single track here should be missed by fans of melodic extreme metal that could be described as immersive, rather than casual.

A great, substantial chunk of Austrian metal.

  • Album Review: Alter Bridge-Self-Titled

    Written by Anselm Anderson

Today, Alter Bridge releases their eighth studio album. The self-titled release features twelve tracks of their most deeply personal and heaviest material since 2007’s Blackbird album. “Alter Bridge” follows up 2022’s critically Acclaimed Pawn and Kings, and is once again produced by Michael ‘Elvis’ Baskette at his legendary 5150 studios in Los Angeles. He consistently brings out the best in the band with his keen ear for their nuances. This is true for Alter Bridge. Baskette emphasises the band’s strengths as writers and musicians, with the group aiming for a harder rock sound. They express more meaning and emotion compared to their previous albums. The songs feel darker, featuring a dark sound with more emphasis on solos and memorable riffs. In this release, guitarist Mark Tremonti takes centre stage with dual vocals on two tracks: ‘Trust in Me‘ and ‘Tested and Able.’ His quiet, melodic vocals blend seamlessly with Kennedy‘s powerful vocals to create emotionally charged tracks.

‘Alter Bridge’ seems to be exorcising their demons through personal tracks about mental health, betrayal, and other societal issues that some might not expect from the band. The album begins with the punchy ‘Silent Divide‘, opening with a thick, distorted riff, as Kennedy bellows “Remember Rage is Blind”. The riffs signal intent, each building in tone and texture against the backdrop of Kennedy’s signature vocals.’Rue the Day‘ features dark rhythms alongside pounding drumbeats, while Kennedy sings sorrowfully about regretting the day. Alter Bridge adds a bluesy instrumental to their arsenal, as Tremonti lets rip with slick, fast solos. The momentum builds into the blistering metal on ‘Power Me Down‘, a contagious track with catchy choruses and memorable riffs. It feels like Alter Bridge is reminiscent of their roots.

On ‘Trust in Me’, Tremonti takes the chorus while Kennedy handles the verses, a fresh approach that adds poignancy and depth to the track. Their voices weave together over slow, steady rhythms and gritty riffs, much like on ‘Tested and Able’, where they swap roles with Tremonti on the chorus and Myles Kennedy delivering the verses. Another track, which features a solid, discordant intro that sounds more grunge-like, similar to Creed. However, this track doesn’t have the same impact as the previous one because the melodic vocal choices don’t blend well with the riff. Scott Phillips’ drumming is driving and intense, with each beat landing in sync with every chord, while Brian Marshall’s basslines rumble beneath the urgency of Kennedy’s vocals and Tremonti’s guitar. The driving force behind ‘What Lies Within’ lies in its powerful guitar riffs and intricate finger-picking, which perfectly capture the discontent and ire of vocalist Kennedy.
The album slows down with melodic ballads like ‘Hanging by a Thread’ and ‘Scales are Falling’, showcasing a vintage Alter Bridge style. Meanwhile, ‘Playing Aces’ combines the band’s hook-laden choruses with galloping rhythms and an intense guitar sound.

The album closes with the nine-minute ‘Slave to Master’, which is the band’s longest in their illustrious career.
Alter Bridge makes a return to their roots with this self-titled release. While there are some tracks I might have left off, I can’t overlook their dedication to crafting a solid rock album filled with deeply personal songs and infectious riffs. This is their statement piece, proving they’re back.

  • Free – Come Together In The Morning (Song Review)

“There is no one else can take your place”

By 1973 Free had reached the end of the road. The departure of bassist/songwriter Andy Fraser and a diminished contribution from troubled guitarist Paul Kossoff was too much for a band that made a virtue of its magical musical chemistry. But their last album Heartbreaker proved the UK rockers could still get it together with the help of bassist Tetsu Yamauchi and keyboardist John ‘Rabbit’ Bundrick. The album’s second track Come Together In The Morning is a great example of Free at their best, with their soulful feel and mastery of heavy emotion still intact. The lyrics are a touch trite but the verses have a wintery melancholy that contrasts wonderfully with the more uplifting, Beatlesque chorus. My favourite part of the song comes at the tail of the chorus where Paul Rodgers sings “see the world the same as me”. Rodgers’ sublime delivery and the aching harmonies makes for a blissful hook that pops into my head regularly and necessitates giving the album another visit. Come Together In The Morning is the sound of a band channelling the sadness of its final days into a beautiful, bittersweet classic.

HMO salutes Tetsu Yamauchi who recently passed away, aged 79.
