THE LAZY EYES Announce New Album ‘Cheesy Love Songs’

Photo: Pooneh Ghana Marking their grand return, The Lazy Eyes today announce their second album Cheesy Love Songs due August 21 via AWAL. With the news comes their first single in four years, ‘The One Who Got Away’ out now. Marking the occasion is a set of free single launches in Sydney and Melbourne in late April.
Woozy and heartfelt, ‘The One Who Got Away’ is a pseudo-sequel to their song ‘Imaginary Girl’. Written around the time of their end of high school exams, the track would take on new life in a series of experimental production approaches – “this poor song got put through the wringer” reveals Harvey Geraghty. Aching with a sense of longing and disbelief, the track is a reflection of the years-long process the band undertook to break apart their band and mould their next phase; from teens creating serendipitously to determined young men.
Of the moment, the band share; “This song captures a feeling of regret or longing for a type of love that you know can’t exist in your reality. It’s a little bit about the human desire of always wanting what you can’t have and thinking how perfect things could have been instead of being present and just enjoying your life. It’s about holding on to fantasy and in that way it has a dreamy and sad quality to it. It’s definitely not your run of the mill ‘we’re happy together I love you’ type of song. It’s not exactly about heartbreak either, it’s about a love that never was.”

The Lazy Eyes— dual singer/guitarists Itay Shachar and Harvey Geraghty, drummer Noah Martin and bass player Leon Karagic—started their career with a bang, playing shows across the world, receiving high rotation on triple j and BBC Radio 6 Music, and garnering support from Matt Wilkinson, Elton John and KCRW, among others. After forming in high school and gigging around Sydney for the better part of their teenage years, they broke through with two EPs released in 2020 and 2021 that tapped into the sound of idols like King Gizzard and Tame Impala.
Making the album, the band were inspired by the minimalist approach of Rick Rubin, which allowed the collection of songs they had chosen to record to shine without embellishment. This is evident in the songs, which sit firmly in a lineage that includes Sparklehorse, Amy Winehouse and The Beach Boys. The result is both ornate and carefree, a gorgeous showcase for four of Australia’s best performers and songwriters.
The high school prodigies whose emergence on the scene would spread like wildfire, combined those influences with a love of pop songwriting and a knack for studio wizardry on their debut album SongBook. Released in 2022 and amassing millions of streams, in the time since the band have supported Wet Leg, Djo, The Strokes, performed at Laneway Festival, SXSW, All Points East, triple j’s Like A Version, Splendour in The Grass and toured across Australia, New Zealand, the US, Mexico, UK and Europe – all before the age of 25.

Album review: Black Label Society – Engines Of Demolition
There’s much in life that’s uncertain. The weather we might have at Download is an obvious example, along with how Donald Trump might pronounce the words ‘Strait of Hormuz’, and so on. One thing you can rely on is the fact that any album fronted by Mr. Zachary Phillip Wylde is going to feature riffs that feel like earth movements and solos that bay like hyenas scenting flesh. The new album by Zakk’s Black Label Society is no exception. On the downside, if you choose to look at it that way, nor is it going anywhere different or achieving anything new.
Opener Name In Blood is as complete a song as this line-up has ever produced. It’s all shaggy riffs, a commendable amount of emotion and a languorous, singable hook. Even better – better arguably than anything else on Engines Of Demolition – is Gatherer Of Souls, a thunderous collision of stuttering metallic guitar and skewed melody.
You won’t need AI tools to predict how Lord Humungus and Broken And Blind are going to sound. It’s all tectonic heaviness, each an earthy, Sabbath-marked bloodletter. Then there’s ferocious soloing in Above & Below, and deft slackening of pace in time for Better Days & Wiser Times and Back To Me. Zakk, of course, is about as loyal a centurion as can be imagined, and reliable as bedrock itself. His many decades at Ozzy Osbourne’s side, right to the end, are not to be forgotten by us, or him. He closes this album with a delicate and reflective serenade that’s pointedly titled Ozzy’s Song.
It’s true that not every track here rises to equal heights, but few overstay their welcome. Black Label Society remains a rock steady platform for Zakk Wylde’s beefy talent and excessive riffery. While this album offers nothing new, if you dug this band before, this is one deep hole you’re not gonna want to escape from.
Verdict: 3/5
For fans of: Clutch, Volbeat, Alice In Chains
