  • Full Stream: Varmia – ‘lauks’

Varmia has always operated at the intersection of black metal and something far older—something rooted in land, language, and lineage. Across their catalog, the Polish collective has steadily refined a sound that feels less like genre exercise and more like invocation. On their latest full-length, lauks, that approach reaches a new level of intensity. Set for release March 27 via M-Theory Audio, lauks finds the band doubling down on their fusion of black metal’s ferocity with the ceremonial weight of Baltic ritual music. Recorded live within the crumbling walls of a ruined castle, the album captures not just performance, but place—each strike, chant, and resonance carrying the imprint of the space itself.

From its opening moments, lauks feels immediate and unvarnished—raw in a way that avoids sloppiness, instead channeling a deliberate, almost elemental force. Harsh, incantatory vocals dominate, delivered in the band’s native Polish, while moments of “whitevoice” clean singing cut through like ritual calls echoing across centuries. The interplay creates a constant tension between violence and reverence.

Instrumentally, Varmia expands that tension further. Alongside the expected battery of black metal, the band incorporates traditional instrumentation tied to the Baltic rites—tagelharpa, goat horn, wood tuba, and krivula—layered not as ornamentation, but as structural pillars of the sound. The result lands somewhere between the spiritual weight of Wardruna and the storm-driven force of early Enslaved or Satyricon, while still feeling distinctly their own.

“This album is the quintessence of our understanding of natural, raw intensity, teetering on the verge of chaos,” explains composer Lasota. “As always, we recorded it live – this time among the ruins of one of the many castles still standing on our land. Within its empty, derelict halls, we discovered a new dimension of musical naturalism. The aura of the place is embedded into the sound, reverberating through the slower hits of the instruments.”

The title itself carries equal weight. “The title ‘lauks’ refers to the way our ancestors coexisted in groups of communes or settlements,” Lasota continues. “In the context of this album, it signifies identity, territorial instinct, and the sharp line between us and them.” That sense of boundary—between past and present, ritual and performance, chaos and control—runs through lauks in full. It’s not just an album that draws from history; it feels like it’s been pulled through it.

lauks is out March 27 via M-Theory Audio. You can pre-order it here, and hear the full stream below.

  • Iran War Forces Vader to Postpone Upcoming Australia Tour

    vaderband

I dunno if you’ve heard, but shit is on fire all over the world. Most of it is the United States’ fault, of course, but lots of shit is going down and disrupting everything. Take the war in Iran right now — countries are firing missiles at one another, the U.S. is bombing girls’ elementary schools, and as a result, classic Polish death/thrash outfit Vader announced they’ll have to postpone their planned tour in Australia.

In an announcement made earlier today, the band said they chose to move the tour to late November over safety concerns and the fear that scheduled flights would be canceled if the conflict grew in scope. The band’s statement is as follows:

“Dear fans of Australia, Vader have had to make the difficult decision to reschedule our Australian Tour dates due to the conflict in the Middle East. We cannot risk the flights being cancelled and everyone losing out. We have worked out with our Australian promoter Hardline Media, on some new dates in late November. Please hold onto your tickets; your current ticket/s transfer directly to the rescheduled dates. We will see you in November, we cannot wait to return.”

This has got to be a major bummer for the folks Down Under that were looking forward to this tour. It’s good to see the tickets will still be viable for the new tour dates, but since that might not work for some, Hardline Media released a statement letting folks know how to get their money back if necessary. They also said they would help fans potentially get out of costly flights and hotel reservations.

“Hi fans of Vader, the current situation is not safe and is getting worse by the day it seems. The band and management’s safety is paramount; we back their decision and have sorted new dates in late November. Please note, if you cannot make these dates, simply contact Oztix or Hardline, and we will sort a refund, or a swap to a different tour of your choice. If you have spent money on flights and accommodation, let us know, we can help out maybe with letters to the hotels and flight carriers. We don’t want anyone losing out here.”

Hardline’s statement also urged people in the immediate area of the venues affected by this postponement to attend concerts featuring local acts. Specifically, they’re looking to get those shows planned and organized for the exact dates that Vader postponed.

“Also, and this is an important note, when things like this happen, a lot of the times the venue is forgotten about, their financial loss can be huge, as many of these venues are not Pubs, they only open for live music and derive the majority of their income from live music. We have long relationships with these venues on this tour, being both Crowbars in Brisbane and Sydney, and the Croxton in Melbourne. We have put the call out to some local bands to put on gigs to fulfil these nights, with a very low entry fee, and a good solid local line up of Metal. At least then the venues can recoup something.

“When these are sorted, please jump on board to support the venues because without them, none of this would happen. All our other tours are safe due to their routing and won’t be affected. Thanks for your understanding”

As it stands, the three newly announced tour dates are slated for November 25 in Melbourne, November 26 in Brisbane, and November 27 in Sydney.

  • Album Review: Mallavora – What If Better Never Comes?

Album Review: Mallavora – What If Better Never Comes?

    Reviewed by Oli Gonzalez

Amongst the biggest bands in the UK you’ve never heard of. Looking at Mallavora’s list of accomplishments since their inception in 2020, you have a feeling that they’re going in the right direction and will be huge. Just some accomplishments include airplay on BBC Radio, festival appearances at the likes of Download and 2000 Trees, a support slot with Skindred, and a headline tour across the UK. They have also appeared in less conventional places. More specifically, vocalist Jessica lent her voice to the BBC’ s TV show ‘The Celebrity Traitors’. How many musicians can say they’ve done that?

Via Church Road Records, Mallavora are poised to release their debut full length album “What If Better Never Comes?” (WIBNC) which they describe as a “conceptual exploration of sickness-personal and societal-and it’s given us the space to express our experiences of difference in new and expansive ways”. Just reading the some of the lyrics, they certainly pull no punches with their choice of raw unfiltered words. For instance, the song ‘Hopeless’.

“Give me a pill, say I’ll be fine, sink it to me”

For anybody unfortunately living with an illness (physical or mental) can relate to a sentiment of simply being palmed off with medication that at best manages the symptoms and not tackling the root cause. This isn’t going to be a pleasant topic musically and will require a strong delivery. Fortunately, the powerful ethereal vocals of Jessica are more than up for the challenge, and is matched by the equally bleak and melancholic tone of the music. With songs tackling the oppression of women in society and other bold hard hitting topics, Mallavora are willing to go to places other artists are afraid to…a fearless commitment to their art that should be commended!

Album Review: Mallavora - What If Better Never Comes?

Whilst Jessica is the vocal powerhouse of the band, the contribution of bassist James and his furious backing vocals should not be overlooked! Check out ‘Smile’ for examples of his roars that are dripping in a primitive hardcore edge. The whole song screams of a chaotic hardcore energy too! Though they shift the plan of attack during ‘Waste’, where the progressive and djent ends of metal are fully explored. Here, the bass and guitars lock in to conjure up bone-crunching riff after crushing distorted riff, often played to none conventional time signatures (think TesseracT). Though they make way for the powerful chorus delivered by Jessica…and not for the first time on this album as she consistently delivers solid hooks that become instantly memorable!

Thirteen songs seems like quite an effort and somewhat ambitious. Especially considering the way people consume music nowadays; mostly digital in small bite size chunks. However, dive deeper and you’ll realise that the majority hover around the 3 minute mark, making them short bursts and easy to digest. As well being more likely to get picked for playlists and air time. Unlike the 9 minute title track ‘What If Better Never Comes?’, a slow burner in the outset but gradually increases in pace and emotional gravity to deliver a cathartic climax to the album!

So, closing and overall thoughts on “WIBNC?”? For this nature of progressive metal, it does feel like the production is not as sharp as it could or needs to be. Especially when compared to the likes of Textures with their release of “Genotype” in January 2026, though one must consider the gaps in production budgets and resources available. It’s easy to see why Mallavora are heading in a positive upward trajectory as there’s so much to celebrate and admire about this young up and coming band!
