Track Premiere: Crippled Black Phoenix – “Colder and Colder”
Although we here at Decibel prioritize the extremes of heaviness and aggression, we also like to make room for melancholy introspection — when delivered in a compelling way. And that’s definitely what you get on “Colder and Colder,” the latest single from Crippled Black Phoenix. The song is a plodding and contemplative composition that delivers death rock atmosphere and shoegaze-esque moodiness.
Catchy and immediate, but also endlessly mournful and gloomy, it’s the soundtrack to your next rainy day. It brings together the various influences the band’s been known for since its 2004 inception by drummer Justin Greaves. According to vocalist and guitarist Justin Storms, who is featured on “Colder and Colder”:
“I received this song from Greaves along with the title and immediately was drawn to the melancholic sound. I remember when I first put on my headphones and listened to “Colder and Colder.” I started to hum a few melodies while listening to the song. It didn’t take long to write down some of the phrases that became the song’s verses, “Colder and colder / see your hand on my shoulder / colder and colder / see your eyes looking over … ” I wanted to create a rhythmic sort of pattern with the song title and the vocal elements.”
Greaves adds that: “Musically, “Colder and Colder” is one of my favorites on Sceaduhelm. It’s the link between classic CBP style and the more austere, dark pop aspect of how I write. When I picked out the title from my list of ideas, it made total sense. Working with Storms on this song was a total victory. He’s an awesome vocalist and his lyrics really give it a chilling, tragic story.”
Check out “Colder and Colder” below. Sceaduhelm comes out April 17th via Season of Mist. You can find preorder information here.

Danny L Harle’s Music-First Manifesto
There are magical objects scattered around Danny L Harle’s studio in Hackney. A small dark silver knight wedges himself between speakers and computer monitors; a star-cloaked figurine of Merlin holds a bright orange flame aloft. Nearby are relics from the producer’s own pop mythology: a black baseball cap from Caroline Polachek’s Pang, a red cornucopia of plastic grapes recalling her “Billions” video, a CD of Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism, a wooden box that reads “Azimuth Circle,” and a black trench coat hanging with a white buoy. The two latter objects nod to Harle’s official debut album Cerulean, out now via XL.
