Album Review: Insomnium – Netherworlds

When it comes to melodic death metal, few bands can be as consistent in quality as Insomnium, who have released their tenth studio album upon the world. With a career spanning nearly three decades, the Finnish quintet are showing no signs of complacency with their latest offering.

Insomnium’s stability was rocked in 2023 when guitarist Jani Liimatainen (ex-Sonata Arctica, Cain’s Offering, The Dark Element) disappeared. Quite literally. Despite being made a full member in 2019 and releasing two Eps and two albums, they arrived in Manchester for the start of their European tour without any knowledge of his whereabouts. This led to Tomy Laisto stepping into the role temporarily, before being made an official member earlier this year.

Did that instability and uncertainty affect proceedings when it came to recording Netherworlds? It certainly doesn’t show. The most surprising thing about the new album is the opening track. A cover of Henry Purcell’s centuries-old aria is not what anyone was expecting (a more familiar version is Klaus Nomi’s 1981 rendition), but it does lay the foundations rather well for what is to come. With Autumn in full swing and Winter on the way, Insomnium’s atmospherically charged version of ‘The Cold Song’ fits perfectly well. This gives way to ‘Shawdowlife’ and we get our first juxtaposition of clean and harsh vocals. This is a formula that works, and the band put it to great effect throughout the album, which runs at 54 minutes. The time doesn’t drag, thanks in part to tracks like ‘Remembrance’ and Gleam in the Black, the former of which almost sounds like a pop-punk song mixed with death metal; The latter may remind long-time listeners of one of their most popular tracks, 2014’s Ephemeral. It’s a perfect mix of melodic melancholy.

Joining the band on ‘The Hour Grows Late’ are three members from progressive death metal Amorphis. The result of this Finnish collab is beautiful yet sorrowful: everything you’d want from such a melding of talent. ‘Arch of the Sky’ and ‘Pathways of the Night’ continue this trajectory. Insomnium are masters at making their songs sound both heavy and peaceful at the same time. ‘Ethereal Sleep’ is special in that behind Niilo Sevänen’s whispered growls is a beautiful dream-like melody weaving in the background. ‘The Banished’ ramps up the heaviness before ‘Journey’s End’ closes the album with a haunting, almost funeral dirge quality, complete with narration. It’s vast and dramatic.

You’d be forgiven for thinking there are moments reminiscent of fellow Finnish death metallers Omnium Gatherum, as guitarist Markus Vanhala shares axe duties in both bands. Sevänen’s dark poetry/literature inspired lyrics are as powerful as on any of their previous releases. Eagle eyed fans may also appreciate the album’s cover art, beautifully realised by famed metal artist Travis Smith, who has created some of the genre’s best loved and iconic album covers, from Opeth and Katatonia to Avenged Sevenfold and Devin Townsend. Overall, this is a worthy album of the Insomnium name, and a perfect addition to any melodic death metal fan’s vinyl or CD collection.

As fans celebrated the 100th anniversary of Chuck Berry’s birth on October 18, Molland, Solem & Miller are honoring his legacy with a new rendition of “Johnny B. Goode,” out now. Featuring the late Joey Molland of Badfinger, Phil Solem of The Rembrandts, and singer-songwriter and guitarist Jeff Miller, the recording pays tribute to a rock & roll pioneer whose influence connects generations of musicians.

Released October 16 through Minneapolis-based Hygh Tension Records, with distribution by Virgin Music Group, the single offers the first taste of a 12-song Chuck Berry tribute album due May 14, 2027. Years in the making, the project grew from the trio’s friendship, acoustic performances together, and shared admiration for Berry’s music.

The collaboration began in Minneapolis, where all three musicians were living when local guitar shop Willie’s American Guitars helped bring Molland and Solem together for a benefit performance. Rehearsals revealed an immediate chemistry as the musicians performed songs from their respective catalogs and backed each other onstage.

“They started playing their hits, backing each other up, and it was just stupendous,” recalls Miller. “It was great, the two talents together.”

Miller encouraged the collaboration to continue, and the three eventually took their acoustic performances on the road. Along the way, their shared enthusiasm for Berry’s songwriting and guitar playing sparked the idea for a tribute.

“We all realized we loved Chuck Berry and loved all kinds of different songs of Chuck Berry,” Miller explains. “We said, ‘Okay, well, let’s do a tribute to him.’”

That idea became a long-running recording project, with Molland, Solem, and Miller bringing their own musical personalities to a collection of Berry classics. For Molland, the project also carried a personal connection through his friendship with Berry’s daughter, Ingrid Berry Clay, who was aware of the recordings.

Following Molland’s passing in 2025, the project has taken on added significance, preserving his performances alongside longtime friends and collaborators. His vocals on “Johnny B. Goode” help introduce a tribute rooted in the music that inspired the trio and generations of fellow musicians.

The forthcoming album features interpretations of “Roll Over Beethoven,” “Nadine,” “Carol,” “You Never Can Tell,” “Memphis,” “Little Queenie,” and “Around and Around,” among other Berry favorites. Additional singles will arrive in the months leading up to the album’s May 2027 release.

“We are very, very excited to have Hygh Tension Records promoting and bringing this album that we’ve done all this work on to fruition,” says Miller.

Released to coincide with Berry’s centennial, “Johnny B. Goode” introduces a project that celebrates both his enduring musical legacy and the friendship his songs helped bring together.

Back in 2006, Fall Out Boy were live from New York on Saturday night for an episode of SNL, and it was a performance that vocalist Patrick Stump still sees as a dream come true.

The band were the musical guest on Season 31, Episode 13 of the show, which aired on March 04 and was hosted by Natalie Portman.

Delivering both ‘Dance, Dance’ and ‘Sugar, We’re Going Down’, Patrick still looks back on the appearance fondly today.

In our new interview with him, found in Made In Chicago: A Rock Sound Tribute, he describes how it felt to live out a real ambition.

“I’m not an ambitious person but SNL was this thing that I was obsessed with as a kid, and I’m still kind of obsessed with it. It was literal dream stuff to even imagine being there.

I didn’t consider myself a singer. I was a smartass who was pretending to sing as a joke and accidentally discovered that I was an okay singer. And now I’m singing on SNL. I remember we played right after Natalie Portman did her famous rap video with The Lonely Island.

We got to interact with some of the cast. I remember Kristen Wiig was really sweet to me. I was really nervous and scared and terrified of being on TV. And it wasn’t much, but she came over and was like, ‘Hey, you know, you’re really talented. That was really good’. I needed that so bad at that moment.”

But before the show even aired, the band’s style of performance almost got them into hot water…

You do a dress rehearsal which they film and then you do the real live show and the dress is there in case there’s anything that goes wrong and they can play it in.

“So we did the dress and we played ‘Sugar…’ and Pete and Joe are just doing their thing, like we do in any other club, jumping off the walls. The thing I didn’t realise at SNL is that all of the staging is interconnected. So the backside of one set is the front of another set.

So they bounce off the walls, and all of SNL wobbles. The stage director came over, and he was not impolite but it was very firm – ‘Ok, thanks, don’t ever fucking do that again’.

So that was the big thing I remember, almost collapsing SNL.”

Metallica has released pro-shot footage of “Devil’s Dance” from the second night of its Life Burns Faster residency at Sphere in Las Vegas. The performance took place Oct. 3. Life Burns Faster runs from Oct. 1 through March 13, 2027. 

The run consists of 24 shows, packaged as 12 No Repeat Weekend engagements spread across October, November, January, February and March. As on the M72 world tour, each Thursday and Saturday pair gets entirely different setlists, so no song shows up on both nights.

The Oct. 3 gig opened with “Blackened,” then rolled through “Fuel” and “Leper Messiah” before the band reached into the Load catalog for “Devil’s Dance.” The song had been absent from live sets for 18 years. Later, Metallica also brought back “The Outlaw Torn” for the first time in seven years.

Sphere holds 17,600 people and has shaken up live entertainment since opening in September 2023. The venue sits near the Venetian Resort and Wynn Las Vegas, just off the Strip, and is known for its 16K wraparound screen and a hefty sound system. Past residencies there include U2, Phish, Dead & Company and The Eagles.

Drummer Lars Ulrich said when the band announced the residency earlier this year that watching U2 open the venue three years ago convinced him Metallica had to play there. “About 12 seconds into the opening night of Sphere with U2 back in ’23, I thought, ‘We have to do this. It’s completely uncharted territory,’” Ulrich said. “This residency gives us another chance to reinvent how we interact with our fans in a live setting. We are beyond excited to share this with the world … and way fuckin’ psyched to go next level!”

The venue’s tech includes what is billed as the highest-resolution LED display in the world, which curls up, over and around the audience. Its audio rig, Sphere Immersive Sound, is powered by HOLOPLOT and is designed to deliver clean, precise audio to every seat.

Metallica has played to millions of fans across all seven continents, in venues of every size. The M72 tour has drawn more than four million people across Europe, North America, the Pacific Rim and the Middle East since it launched in spring 2023, and it is widely regarded as one of the best stretches in the band’s 40-plus years on the road.
