Anthrax has released the official Joel Harlow-directed music video for “The Edge Of Perfection,” the second single from the band’s long-awaited twelfth studio album, “Cursum Perficio,” due September 18 via Megaforce in the U.S. and Nuclear Blast in Europe. It’s the thrash legends’ first full-length in ten years — since 2016’s “For All Kings,” which debuted in the Billboard 200 Top 10 — and guitarist Scott Ian isn’t being shy about how he feels about the new track: in a recent interview with Full Metal Jackie’s nationally syndicated radio show, he called it “the greatest Anthrax song in the history of Anthrax.”

Scott Ian doesn’t hedge when he talks about “The Edge Of Perfection.” Speaking with Full Metal Jackie, the guitarist said flatly: “We have not written anything this great in our career. And to do that all these years in makes it all the more special.” That’s a heavy claim from a band with a catalog that includes “Among The Living” and “Persistence Of Time,” and it sets a high bar for a record that’s already carrying the weight of a decade-long wait.
What makes the claim land differently is what Ian says the song is actually about. Rather than the band’s usual thrash subject matter, “The Edge Of Perfection” was written about Ian’s family and the ongoing effort to live up to the title itself. “I think that I’ve never had any real other goal in my life except to be happy. And I am,” he told Full Metal Jackie — a strikingly personal statement from a founding member of one of the “Big Four” of thrash, a lineup Loaded Radio has ranked among the genre’s most important acts.
The music itself has an even longer history than the lyric. Drummer Charlie Benante told Metal Hammer magazine back in August 2024 that he’d written the music for “The Edge Of Perfection” “way before COVID,” and that it stuck with him for years — “the melody and the chords, but also the aggression.” That timeline tracks with everything else about this album cycle: Anthrax has been sitting on serious material for a long time, refining it rather than rushing it out.
The album title itself is doing some heavy lifting. “Cursum Perficio” is Latin for “My journey has come to an end,” “My journey is over,” or “I complete my journey” — a fitting title for a band closing out its longest gap between studio albums. Loaded Radio previously covered the album’s mixing-complete milestone, and the road from that point to an actual September 18 street date has clearly been used to sharpen, not pad, the tracklist.
“Cursum Perficio” isn’t Anthrax’s first swing of this era, either — the band kicked things off back in May with lead single “It’s For The Kids,” which gave fans their first real preview of where the record was headed. “The Edge Of Perfection” is the deeper cut, the one that seems to matter most to the band members themselves.
For a group that’s spent 45 years balancing aggression with genuine songwriting, a decade of silence followed by a guitarist calling a new song the best of his career isn’t a small thing to say out loud. Whether “The Edge Of Perfection” holds up to that claim once the full album lands in September is the conversation the whole thrash scene will be having this fall.
