Grammy-nominated artist and 10-time Blues Music Award winner Danielle Nicole has released her new single, “Take Me Back,” featuring North Mississippi Allstars guitarist Luther Dickinson. The song is the latest preview of her forthcoming album, Fireflies, which will be released on August 28 via 40 Below Records.
Built around a swampy groove that blends blues, soul and Southern roots, “Take Me Back” reflects on Nicole’s upbringing in western Missouri. Joined by Dickinson’s unmistakable guitar work, the song revisits the back porches, railroad tracks and coal fires of her childhood while also paying tribute to her late brother and longtime bandmate, Kris. The recording also features Kris’ drum kit, adding another personal connection to the track.
“‘Take Me Back’ is about remembering where you come from,” says Nicole. “Those places, those people and those memories become part of who you are forever.”
Fireflies is Nicole’s fourth solo album and was recorded live to analog tape in Kansas City with producer Tony Braunagel, guitarist Brandon Miller and keyboardist Jim Pugh. The album explores themes of loss, resilience, empowerment and hope through a blend of blues, classic soul and Americana.
Written largely in the wake of her brother’s passing, Fireflies finds Nicole expanding her collaborative songwriting while remaining rooted in the music that first inspired her. The album balances deeply personal storytelling with groove-driven performances and features some of the strongest songwriting of her career.
“Take Me Back,” featuring Luther Dickinson, is available now. Fireflies will be released on August 28 via 40 Below Records.
