Bloodstock Open Air have announced the first bands for their 2027 edition, running August 5–8, 2027 at Catton Park in Derbyshire. The Ronnie James Dio main stage headliners are Mercyful Fate on Friday, Electric Callboy on Saturday and Motionless In White on Sunday — the latter two headlining Bloodstock for the first time.
On the Sophie Lancaster stage, Madball open the festival on Thursday, with Gaerea, Kanonenfieber and Dethklok taking the remaining top slots. Special guests include Acid Bath, Green Lung and Children Of Bodom. Early bird weekend tickets are £210 with no booking fee on site during Bloodstock 2026, rising to £235 plus fee when general on-sale opens Monday, August 10. Around 100 more bands are still to be announced.

They announced it from the stage. Bloodstock 2026 is still going on as you read this, and festival HQ revealed the first names for next year at the Ronnie James Dio stage, straight after Municipal Waste finished melting faces.
August 5–8, 2027. Catton Park. Here’s who’s confirmed.
Start with the bit that isn’t in anyone else’s coverage.
Mercyful Fate headline the Friday, and King Diamond issued a statement that on the surface is standard festival-announcement warmth — honoured, looking forward to it, last time was great.
Then he adds seven words that change a story we were writing about this morning: “and this time with a brand new album out, FINALLY!!!”
That’s the clearest commitment anyone in that band has made on the record in four years.
Some context on why it matters. Mercyful Fate’s last album was “9,” released in 1999. They debuted a song from the follow-up — “The Jackal Of Salzburg” — live in June 2022. And the updates since have gone in the wrong direction: King Diamond said the track was almost finished in February 2024, with vocals being recorded and one final bass pass to go, and then Becky Baldwin described the album as being in the demoing process in January 2025.
Almost finished, then demoing, eleven months later. That’s the pattern that’s had fans sceptical.
Now the frontman has publicly attached a release to a festival date thirteen months out, with three exclamation marks on the word finally. He knows exactly how long people have been waiting.

Earlier this week, Mercyful Fate announced they’d play Leyendas Del Rock in Villena, Spain — August 11–14, 2027.
Those are consecutive weekends. A band that hasn’t played a single show since April 2024 now has two European festival dates seven days apart.
That is not two coincidences. That’s the skeleton of a European run being built, and you don’t build a European run in support of nothing. Between the routing and King Diamond’s statement, the album case is stronger today than it’s been since 2022.

A complete tonal handbrake turn, and that’s rather the point of a good festival bill.
Electric Callboy headline Bloodstock for the first time on Saturday night. German metalcore welded to EDM and outright comedy, in what is genuinely one of the most enjoyable live shows in modern heavy music — and a band who, as their new album TANZNEID demonstrated this week, can still write something genuinely nasty when they feel like it.
Their statement was about as Electric Callboy as it gets: their first-ever Bloodstock, heavy music, questionable outfits and thousands of metalheads sounding like a perfect fit, and they’re in.
Expect Catton Park bouncing in unison like a rave that took a wrong turn into a mosh pit.
This one deserves more attention than it’ll get.
Motionless In White close the main stage on Sunday, and Chris Motionless framed it precisely. He said the band were told they’re one of the most requested acts for the festival, that this will be their first ever European festival headlining show, and — the important part — their only UK show of 2027.
So for anyone in Britain who wants to see Motionless In White next year, this is it. One show, one weekend, no alternative dates.
Twenty years in, with the gothic-industrial theatricality they’ve spent that time building, and a headline slot to fill however they want. Given how the last tour looked, whatever they’re planning for this will be substantial.
Buried in the middle of the announcement, and genuinely brilliant.
The Sophie Lancaster stage headliners are Madball on Thursday — thirty-five years of New York hardcore, Freddy Cricien still hitting exactly as hard as 1989 — followed by Gaerea on Friday, whose black metal has become more cinematic with every record, and Kanonenfieber on Saturday, the German project turning First World War diaries into blackened death metal.
And then Dethklok close it. Not just the Sophie stage — the very final band of the whole festival.
A group that began life as a cartoon on Metalocalypse is the last thing anyone hears at Bloodstock 2027. And anyone treating that as a novelty booking hasn’t heard them; the melodic death metal is entirely serious and the musicianship is absurd.

Also on the main stage: Devildriver, Corrosion Of Conformity, Imminence, Wind Rose, Sylosis, Decapitated, Witch Club Satan, HammerFall, Hypocrisy, The Halo Effect, Tortured Demon, Gutalax, Humanity’s Last Breath and Conan.
Also on the Sophie stage: Dool, Pig Destroyer and Fulci.
A few of those deserve flagging. The Halo Effect are ex-In Flames members returning to classic Gothenburg melodeath. Witch Club Satan are an all-female Norwegian black metal coven who bring actual theatre training to genuinely confrontational ritual performance. And Conan describe what they do as “caveman battle doom,” which is the most accurate genre tag anyone has ever written.
Roughly 100 more bands are still to be announced.
This is the practical bit, and it’s time-sensitive.
Early bird weekend tickets are £210 with no booking fee, available at the main entrance box office throughout Bloodstock 2026 — which is happening this weekend. The festival expects them to sell out on site.
Once they’re gone, the price becomes £235 plus booking fee, with general on-sale opening Monday, August 10 at 9am.
So if you’re at Catton Park right now, walking to the box office saves you £34 a ticket.

Rush are filming all four of their Toronto shows for a potential live concert film. The run opened on Friday, August 7 at Scotiabank Arena, with three dates remaining on August 9, 11 and 13. Geddy Lee confirmed the plan on August 6, citing overwhelming demand and the fact that the four-night residency lets the band draw from more than forty songs.
Drummer Anika Nilles continues in the role left by the late Neil Peart, alongside touring keyboardist Loren Gold. Separately, the RIAA certified Rush’s 1976 album 2112 as 4x platinum on August 7 — its first upgrade since reaching 3x platinum in November 1995. A 50th anniversary edition of 2112 arrives October 2 via UMe, Mercury and Anthem Records on black liquid vinyl, with the 2003 compilation The Spirit Of Radio: Greatest Hits 1974–1987 receiving its vinyl debut the same day.

The band are recording all four of their Toronto shows at Scotiabank Arena — August 7, 9, 11 and 13 — for what Geddy Lee describes as a potential future live film. Night one is done. Three to go.
His reasoning, given the day before the run opened, covers three things.
The first is demand. Lee said the appetite for a film has been off the charts — both as a keepsake for people who were there and for the many fans who haven’t been able to get to a show at all. Given how this tour has gone, that’s not hyperbole.
The second is home. Toronto is where Rush formed in 1968. Lee called it a natural choice, and noted that fans are travelling in from across the globe for the week.
The third is the one that matters most, and we’ll come back to it: the four-show run means they’ll be playing over forty songs, which he said gives them the best chance to capture it all.
And then the part that explains why this tour has felt different from a standard reunion. Lee described the whole thing as a celebration of the band’s history and a tribute to Neil, and said it’s been an emotional outpouring from the fans as much as from the band — that they’ve been louder and prouder than ever. He signed off hoping to capture them letting their ya-yas out while rocking their best “Tom Sawyer” air drum fills.
Which, if you’ve ever been in a room when that song starts, is precisely the right thing to want on film.

Back in June, when Rush played their second night at the Kia Forum and performed the entire 2112 suite, we reported something Alex Lifeson had confirmed: the band had deliberately rehearsed close to forty songs so they could actively rotate deep cuts across multiple-night stands in major cities.
Read Geddy’s quote again. Four shows. Over forty songs. Best chance to capture it all.
Those are the same fact, two months apart.
The Toronto film isn’t an opportunistic decision made on the road. The rotating-setlist architecture of this entire tour is what makes a four-night residency worth filming — because across those four nights you don’t get one setlist repeated, you get most of a catalogue. The Forum debut threw out the traditional live playbook immediately, and they’ve been rotating ever since.
Any other band films one night and cuts a concert movie. Rush built a tour that lets them film four and cut something closer to a career retrospective.
Now the statistic that stopped us.
The RIAA certified 2112 as 4x platinum on August 7. Four million units in the United States.
It last moved in November 1995, when it hit 3x platinum.
That’s thirty-one years to sell another million copies of an album that came out in April 1976.
Sit with that. Between 1995 and today, physical music retail collapsed, downloads arrived and died, and streaming rebuilt the entire industry twice. Through all of it, a side-long science-fiction concept suite about a totalitarian priesthood and a man who finds a guitar kept finding another million people.

Worth restating the scale, because it’s easy to lose track.
When the Fifty Something tour was announced in October 2025, it was Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson’s first tour together in eleven years, since R40 ended in August 2015. It began as a modest run.
Then the tickets vanished. By the time we covered the 2027 South American and European expansion in February, twenty-two dates had become fifty-eight shows across twenty-four cities and past half a million tickets sold. Lee joked that Rush had somehow become an overnight sensation after fifty years.
They returned to a stage at the 2026 Juno Awards in March, played their first full show since 2015 at the Forum in June, and haven’t stopped since.
And Anika Nilles has settled the question that hung over all of it. Stepping into the most intimidating drum seat in rock, she’s played Peart’s polyrhythms with his own sticks resting on her riser, and the response from the most protective fanbase in music has been ovations rather than arguments.
This isn’t the only thing being filmed.
Earlier this week a Neil Peart documentary was announced — No One’s Disciple, arriving on CBC September 23, featuring interviews with Lee and Lifeson and new performances of Rush songs with Chad Smith, Stewart Copeland and Danny Carey filling that seat.
So within one week: a documentary about the drummer, and a concert film of the band playing without him. Both landing in the same year, both circling the same absence.
The thing to keep half an eye on.
In February we reported Geddy Lee saying new music was “possible” and confirming the band were jamming. That was a genuine shift — Rush had been categorised as finished, not paused, since Peart’s death in 2020.
A concert film, a 50th anniversary reissue, a documentary, fifty-eight shows and a hint at new material. For a band everyone had filed away as history, 2026 has been a considerable year.
