Portland, Oregon act Master Splinter (named after the mutant rat kung-fu master from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) is back with their newest EP "Black Hole".

The 3-track release begins with "No Die", a song we're familiar with as we reviewed it back in April of last year. The song is introduced as distorted hard rock guitars, slamming drums, and eccentric spoken/softly sung vocals create a powerful sound. Master Splinter quickly showcases a sound that strikes a balance between classic rock, heavy metal, and a more experimental sound. The song builds in intensity as brutal guitar chugs and echoing screams create a sound that is unexpectedly heavy from the starting point of the song.

"Raven's Rise" starts with dark ambient guitar before launching into speeding drums and belted vocals that have an operatic quality to them. Theatrical lyrics remind me of power metal as grandiosities are described while slamming guitar creates a heavy backbone for the track. The song's mix sounds good, but still feels a little unpolished. I think the sense of rawness matches the eccentricity of Master Splinter; it feels like they are experimenting and releasing music that is unapologetic and true to themselves, which I like. A heavily distorted growl launches into a breakdown as bright synths further the epic vibe of the track while piercing guitar leads add more melody to the sound.

The final song, "Unbound" starts with a thumping bass line that reminds of progressive rock as drums and guitar are slowly introduced. Drawn-out vocals further a dramatic sound as reverbed instrumentals create a deep atmosphere as vocals fade away. "Unbound" feels much more atmospheric than the previous tracks, taking a slower sound that focuses on building a larger soundscape. Things speed up soon enough as distorted guitar riffs and shredding leads are catapulted into your ears, meanwhile distant screams further metal influences. Heavy-hitting syncopated chugging creates a memorable exit to the track.

Overall, "Black Hole" is a strong release from the band and showcases a sound that blends influences from across rock, metal, and experimental genres. Master Splinter creates a sound that feels unique, a little raw, and the band isn't afraid to get weird at times, which makes their songs memorable and stand out from the norm. Ah, St. Patrick’s Day weekend. What a great time to hang out with friends, turn up the tunes, and get rip-roaringly irresponsible with your favorite booze of choice. Now imagine you had all that and a large lineup of some of today’s badass death metal bands playing on stages across two days?

Enter this year’s Shamrock Slaughter Fest. Set to start next Friday on March 13-14 in Fort Worth, Indiana’s Piere’s Entertainment Center and Stan’s Room, this all-ages event will see some huge names like headliners Incantation and Sanguisugabogg throwing down. A total of 28 different bands will perform across two stages over the course of those two days.

Looking at the lineup of bands feels like a love letter to the genre, which was by design according to the fest’s Gravemind Entertainment’s Braxton Keyser.

“I grew up in this scene, surrounded by people who live and breathe this music. Shamrock Slaughter Fest was built from that same passion — to bring together every part of death metal and extreme music under one roof. For our first year to feature one of the biggest names in metal today, legendary bands that helped shape the genre, and young acts keeping it alive — that says everything about where this scene is right now. My goal is to keep building something the fans, the bands, and the entire community can be proud of, and with their support, take it even further every year.”

It should be noted that Incantation’s ongoing food drive will be featured at this year’s festival, so remember to bring non-perishable food items to donate. Every little bit helps.

The first band on Friday, March 13 will kick things off shortly after doors open at 5 p.m. with music continuing until 11:30 p.m. that night. The following day, doors open at 2 p.m. with music running until about midnight.

Trash Boat have revealed that they are released a new feature-length documentary, and it is coming to the big screen for one night only.

‘Getting There’ is the band’s first foray into cinema and charts its journey over the years. An unfiltered look at the ups, downs, triumphs and hurdles, all culminating in showing how it has allowed them to get to the place that they are today.

It will premiere on April 02 with a special showing at Rio Cinema in Dalston. The screening will feature a Q&A with the band, during which they will discuss the film and what the future holds.
