Turned To Stone Chapter 10 features music from Ten East and SoftSun.
The press release sums up the album well. “Drawing from the deep well of the California desert, psychedelic rock units SoftSun and Ten East are intrinsically bound by heart and conjure a mesmerizing sonic mirage on their split LP Turned To Stone: Chapter 10. With guitarist Gary Arce of Yawning Man and bassist Pia Isaken at the core of both projects — with the addition of Earthless guitarist Isaiah Mitchell and Yawning Man drummer Bill Stinson on the Ten East side, and drummer Dan Joeright on the SoftSun side — this breathtaking 5-track locks you into its hypnotic, at times shoegazing sonic explorations and refuses to let go.”
Every release in this series has been memorable, and each claimed a permanent spot in my personal collection of physicals. This latest entry is high water for an already elevated premise. You need to listen to the record – anything I might say won’t change the majesty of the music. I highly recommend it. Here are details on the bands and the tracks.
“Ten East is an experimental project formed by Gary Arce, Mario Lalli, Bill Stinson and Brant Bjork. The project’s first release Extraterrestrial Highway came out on Cobraside in 2005. The project is named after Interstate 10, a major transcontinental highway stretching from Santa Monica, California, to Jacksonville, Florida, known for its diverse landscapes. Always collaborating with different musicians, depending on availability and which musician friends were around, the project has been like a revolving door of contributors.”
Ten East contributes two tracks, “First Light” and “Slow Motion War.”
“SoftSun is the result of a divine collaboration between visionary musicians from opposite sides of the world: Yawning Man guitarist Gary Arce from the Californian Mojave Desert and vocalist and bassist Pia Isaksen from the cold and ever-inspiring grounds of Norway. Their environments are nearly palpable in their beautifully heavy, mellow and ethereal sound, with Arce’s trademark cinematic guitar soundscapes providing a stark contrast to Isaksen’s heavy bass and haunting vocals combined with Dan Joeright’s perfectly patient drumming.”
