Megamass - Divide and Liberate! - EP Review - Post-Modern Progressive Metal from Kyiv, Ukraine

Another autumn day in the life of a vagabond, taking long walks outside under grey clouds after too much of reality. Meanwhile, another great talent—Megamass—is playing in my ears with their latest EP at maximum volume, and I stopped believing in coincidences for some time now. Let’s begin.

MegamasS – Her Name Is War (feat. VIXFALL). Music: MegamasS, Lyrics: VIXFALL, Sound/Mastering/Production: Dark Days Production, Video: Produced by YUZHANE PRODUCTION, Director: Alex Matvieiev, Assistant Director: Denys Veremeienko, DOP: Roman Shykunets, Editor/VFX: Igor Moshtys, Colorist: Alex Matvieiev, Producer: Oksana Iegorova (Lishchuk), Style: Nataliia Basiuk, MUAH/SFX: Roksolana Kovalyuk, Helper: Pavlo Osipov, Actors: Svitlana Chorna, Oleksiy Titarenko, Sofiia Makaruk, Japanese style: Anastasiya Podoprigora, Samurai armour: Sychevalnya Cosplay Workshop, Locations: Yuzhane production studio, Frame studio. Actors: Svitlana Chorna, Oleksiy Titarenko, Sofiia Makaruk.⠀

Ukraine has been a home for around 10 years until the war separated us (for now). During those years, I had the chance to know and meet many great talents from all over the country, and although the name always felt familiar, Megamass was carved into my memory by Eugene Abdukhanov of Jinjer, who named them as his top Ukrainian band in heavy music. After quite a long time and only remembering them for their modern sound and hardcore/prog-core style, I was recently introduced to their latest EP with three new songs. Today marks my fourth listen after exploring their Spotify and previous releases.

First and foremost, I have to admit that Divide and Liberate! had an impact on me that I won’t forget. I feel like I now have a clear sense of their capabilities, character, and music style. While showcasing impressive musicianship and production value, this album also confirms how accurate Eugene was in highlighting them as top talent from his country.

Character-wise, the album embodies a post-modern progressive metal concept with its musicality, subject matter, production, and sound. It’s one of the most polished/processed sounds, reminiscent of Jinjer or Space of Variations.

Musically, the album was highly satisfying to me during all my listens, even though I don’t usually listen to this genre in my personal time. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing Megamass’ unfamiliar-sounding musical language, which also featured long and progressive compositions. With this EP, the band got me excited with their similarities to TOL (my all-time favorite metal band from Ukraine) in terms of songwriting and perspective. Megamass simply proves they have the creativity, knowledge, and vision to create music as brilliant as them. All three songs feature thrilling examples of post-modern heavy music, led equally by instrumentals and vocals.

Production-wise, the album undoubtedly represents industry-leading work, though with a question mark that I’ll mention later. It’s loud, brutal, dark, clear, and super dynamic, incorporating vocals, guitars, drums, and additional electronic elements that recall demonic sounds from hell. It is a top-notch production from start to finish.

On the other side of the coin, I would like to share some thoughts, even though the album ranks as impressive for me.

Firstly, I would argue that the work lacks an important detail that often separates the greats from the goods: the presence of a leading vocalist. Divide and Liberate! takes an approach that provides equal emphasis to both instruments and vocals, which I experienced as a disadvantage. The album has all the magic in both vocals and instrumentals, and I could appreciate the fine characterization in each vocal style, guitar tone, and drum tone. It truly is a marvelously detailed work. Yet, many times I expected the vocals to take the lead—whether through volume or the confidence of the vocalist. These expectations weren’t met, and I couldn’t get enough emotional impact from the music, I must admit. It reminded me of Gojira’s latest album Fortitude, where the vocals are not prioritized. In this case, I would strongly argue that this band needs a stronger vocal presence, which would change the entire picture. Just think about the difference a strong vocalist makes in Tol’s Flag—for me, it’s night and day. (important note: My words do not reflect on the current vocalist’s capabilities, only on the role itself.)

Secondly, the music unfortunately did not sound good on cheap stereos, particularly on my iPhone speakers, requiring a certain level of sound quality for the optimal experience.

Megamass - Divide and Liberate! - EP Review - Post-Modern Progressive Metal from Kyiv, Ukraine

In conclusion, Megamass is undoubtedly a fantastic collective that, in my eyes, deserves international recognition. And without hesitation, Divide and Liberate! will help lead the way, leaving a lasting mark in listeners' memories. Her Name is War earned its place in our Monsters of Metal Underground playlist on Spotify. Thank you for reading.

  • Kings of Mercia Shares New Single “Aftermath” + Music Video

KINGS OF MERCIA shares the second single from their new album, out October 25th via Metal Blade Records. The track is entitled “Aftermath” and it has a new music video – watch HERE.”

Aftermath” is “very dark,” vocalist Steve Overland comments. “It’s about what will be left behind in the end. What will be left on the planet. It’s a very dark track and very dark subject matter.

I almost didn’t send this one to Steve, and when I did I was certain he wouldn’t like it,” says guitarist Jim Matheos. “I’m glad I did though, as it’s one of my favorites on the album now. It’s quite different for us and I think Steve really shines on this one.

“Now and again, art offers up the perfect storm. When creative worlds collide with a furious cacophony of power, licks, and lyrics, magic happens. Such is the case with KINGS OF MERCIA, whose second album, ‘Battle Scars,’ is the continuation of a story as unlikely as it is glorious. The band is helmed by guitarist Jim Matheos (Fates Warning) and singer Steve Overland (FM) who are joined by drummer Simon Phillips (The WhoToto) and bassist Joey Vera (Armored SaintFates Warning).

Watch the Music Video for “Aftermath” HERE.

KINGS OF MERCIA‘s 2022 approachable, world-class self-titled debut was termed “truly a hybrid: it’s heavy, but not metal. It’s got tones of melodic AOR hard rock but with an edge.” Now, 2024 brings the band’s sophomore album written and recorded throughout 2023, ‘Battle Scars‘ sees the core writing team of Matheos and Overland expanding on their obvious chemistry.

I think it was a bit easier this time around because we’ve established a good working rhythm,” states Matheos, “I’ll send Steve at least a few songs every couple of months, and I try to keep them varied. This allows him to work on whichever ones he feels strongly about.

What Jim sends me is the first draft of that song,” says Overland. “So once he’s heard all the melodies and the harmonies I sing, he can chop it about and make it how he thinks it should be. He always sends me three or four different versions. He’ll say, ‘What do you think? Which do you like?’ Then we work it out between us and come up with the one we’re both happy with.”

Steve and I started working together in 2021,” says Matheos. “I was aware of FM-they came up around the same time as Fates Warning – but I’d lost touch with them and wasn’t familiar with their more recent work. When Steve was recommended to me, I checked out some of the newer releases and felt Steve was exactly what I was looking for.””It’s a different genre of music that I’m normally involved in,” says Overland, whose voice has been likened to other British greats Paul Rodgers and Glenn Hughes. “Obviously, I’d heard of Fates Warning – they’re a very big cult band in their field. Jim and I touched base, and I told him to send me one backing track. If it sounds great, then it’s a win-win. If it doesn’t, we’ll just call it a day, knock it on the head, not take it any further. That song became ‘Humankind’ from the first album. I wrote the melodies and the title and put it all together. Jim got it and he was blown away. So we made a couple more. I loved doing it. It was just such a different challenge for me.”

Those songs would become the self-titled debut album, which was released in 2022. Written during lockdown, bouncing tracks across the Atlantic, KINGS OF MERCIA found its mojo. Fans of Fates WarningFM, and Armored Saint all rejoiced at the common ground on KINGS OF MERCIA, the sweet spot in the middle of the Venn diagram.

It’s a true collaboration that has led to KOM‘s ‘Battle Scars.’ However, despite the unfolding sound and clear chemistry between the four Kings, Overland has never met his bandmates in person. ‘Battle Scars,’ like its predecessor, is a slab of transatlantic magic.

    Pre-Order ‘Battle Scars‘ HERE.

    Battle Scars‘ Track List:

  • Qui d’autre que l’autre (Lazuli, 2023)

Lazuli, a French prog rock band whose first album was released back in 1999, wrote and performed excellent music, including many complex and unpredictable songs (even if they don’t like long tracks), but – will they excuse me? – I’m definitely in love with this song: an intense, fascinating ballad. It comes from their 2023 album simply titled “11”.

This is the 10th studio album, but there was also an acoustic
collection of previous released songs, so they’re right: that’s 11!

The crescendo plot starts with a deep, even sensual tone and grows up and up until a rather floydian guitar solo that’s simply perfect. The musical theme is beautiful, sharp and catchy (no, this is not a deadly sin) and Dominique Leonetti’s vocal rendition comes like a kick inside the guts of the listener. As usual with them, this is more an inner trip than a song and I like to explore my own soul following such a brilliant guiding star.

  • VOODOO CIRCLE Announces New Album “Hail To The King” – First Single “Let It Rock” Out Now!

German hard- and classic rock act VOODOO CIRCLE has announced the release of its forthcoming, seventh studio album, entitled “Hail To The King”, due out on November 15, 2024 via AFM Records! A lyric video for the band’s first album single, “Let It Rock”, is now streaming below.

Band mastermind and guitarist Alex Beyrodt comments: “With our new album, we have taken a step forward musically. I tried to add a more modern touch here and there without damaging or losing the classic rock roots. It was a lot of fun, but also a lot of work in parts.”

Their new single “Let It Rock” is out now on all digital streaming services at https://voodoocircle.bfan.link/let-it-rock

Watch the video clip premiering HEREEvery album has its own history, and this one not only tells of VOODOO CIRCLE and its musicians, but also – indirectly, of course – of Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Rainbow and Led Zeppelin. Without trying to disguise their influences, VOODOO CIRCLE consciously follow in the footsteps of these iconic acts and their great international status. Their upcoming album “Hail To The King” doesn’t even try to hide the obvious source of inspiration that spawned the twelve tracks on the recording, but presents with pride, bravura and impressive stylistic confidence the brand of timeless hard rock coined by those groups. Beyrodt states: “Our aim is to continue in the great tradition of this music and translate it into a contemporary context.”

The history of “Hail To The King” includes an interesting anecdote: Two of the twelve new album tracks were penned by former Rainbow keyboardist Tony Carey. Beyrodt remembers, looking back almost 25 years: “At the beginning of the 1990s, we were in Tony’s studio to record material for a Sinner album, including the two Carey compositions, ‘All For One’ and ‘Billy’s Song’, which were only released in Japan at the time. I still remember how, in my mid-twenties, I couldn’t believe that I was standing in a recording studio with a legend such as Carey, watching him play the Hammond organ for us, headbanging away. Both songs have been at the back of my mind ever since, just waiting for the right moment to record them again. And since I also wanted to listen to the Rainbow side of me for ‘Hail To The King’, that perfect moment seemed to have arrived.”

At the same time, the new VOODOO CIRCLE album contains not only the usual Whitesnake reminiscences but also a powerful dose from the Led Zeppelin direction. As always, Beyrodt proves to be an outstandingly versatile guitarist, adding: “Ultimately, each song decides which guitar I play. The days when musicians stood for one specific type of guitar are long gone. Nowadays, it’s all about doing justice to the song and its story.”

The first-rate mix courtesy of Achim Köhler, which – like the impressive cover artwork – captures the spirit of this powerful rock disc perfectly, also underlines this claim. Finally, let’s not forget to mention that VOODOO CIRCLE will be going on tour in November 2024, because one thing is obvious: These songs belong on a stage, where hard rock à la VOODOO CIRCLEis truly at home!

  • Mark Read announces “mythical” A1 album: -The best is yet to come!

This is fantastic news for fans worldwide! The upcoming album is anticipated because it marks a significant return. It promises material that reflects the band’s growth and resilience over the years.

By Michael Hartmann. August 19, 2024.

    (Photo via Instagram/markreadofficial).

“…the new “mythical” album is taking shape, believe me, the best is yet to come!”

Earlier this summer, Mark Read shared these words on social media.

This is huge news for the international A1 community. Fans have been buzzing with excitement, expressing their anticipation and joy. The announcement has reignited a sense of community and nostalgia among the international A1 fanbase.

A new album seems to have been planned for a while, maybe even several years ago.

The covid pandemic affected many of us, including A1. Back in 2020, Christian Ingebrigtsen told me this.

Due to the pandemic, the new album had been delayed. As Mark promised, Christian said the band’s upcoming album would probably be one of its best.

This is an outtake of my interview with Christian:

The full interview includes Christian speaking about Armour, a song that may appear on their upcoming album. You can see the full interview here.

    This is Armour:

ON STAGE: Christian Ingebrigtsen discussed A1’s upcoming album with Michael Hartmann in 2020. -It’s going to be one of our best, Christian said.

  • Wacken Open Air 2024: Paradise Found

Wacken Open Air 2024 was more than just a festival; it was a pilgrimage for metalheads from around the globe, and for me, it felt like coming home. Walking through those iconic fields, surrounded by fellow fans with the same undying passion for heavy music, was magical.
This year’s lineup, the crowd’s energy, and the performances’ raw power created an atmosphere that words can hardly capture. Being there reminded me of why Wacken is a rite of passage for any metal fan—a place where the music, the people, and the experience combine to form memories that last a lifetime. Let’s dive into what I can already say was one of the finer years in the 20 years I’ve been attending.
Wacken Open Air 2024 delivered yet another unforgettable experience, solidifying its reputation as one of the world’s premier metal festivals. This year’s edition, held from July 31 to August 3, attracted 85,000 metalheads to the small village of Wacken in northern Germany. The festival offered a packed lineup featuring performances from legendary bands like Korn, Amon Amarth, Scorpions, Blind Guardian, and many more.
The festival’s theme, “Witches & Warlocks,” lent a mystical and enchanting atmosphere, influencing everything from stage designs to performances. Fans embraced the theme, adding to the festival’s unique and immersive vibe. But honestly, the people make this festival such a pleasure to attend.
The crowd at Wacken Open Air is among the best you’ll ever find at any festival. There’s a unique camaraderie among the sea of black-clad metalheads, where everyone becomes part of one massive, welcoming family regardless of where they come from. It’s a place where strangers instantly become friends, whether you’re sharing a beer in the campsite or headbanging side-by-side in the front row.
The spirit of unity is palpable, more than ever in the 2024 edition of the festival. People look out for each other, lifting up those who fall in the mosh pits and cheering with genuine joy during epic guitar solos. This collective passion and respect for the music and each other make Wacken’s crowd not just attendees but an essential part of the festival’s heart and soul.
One of the standout aspects of Wacken 2024 was the weather. This year’s event was blessed with predominantly sunny skies after the rain-soaked struggles 2023, where heavy rain caused severe disruptions. This change not only improved the overall experience but also allowed for a smoother flow of activities, with fans arriving early thanks to a new access system that eased the traffic and crowd control issues that have plagued previous years.
Musically, the festival did not disappoint. Headliners like the Scorpions overcame initial skepticism from the metal purists to deliver a powerful performance that captivated the crowd. Korn’s set was another highlight, with their nu-metal anthems echoing across the festival grounds, proving their enduring appeal.
Blind Guardian’s performance, particularly their rendition of “The Bard’s Song,” was a moment of unity among the crowd, with thousands singing along as the sun set behind them. The energy was palpable, and the band’s connection with the audience was one of the most talked-about aspects of the festival.
The festival also provided a platform for emerging and established acts to shine. Bands like Dragonforce brought their signature high-speed metal to the stage, generating one of the fastest circle pits in Wacken history. Meanwhile, Amon Amarth’s Viking-themed performance, complete with a collective “Row!” chant, added to the festival’s epic scale.
Aside from the music, Wacken 2024 offered a variety of activities and experiences that have become staples of the festival. From metal yoga sessions to medieval-themed sword fighting in the Wackinger Village, there was something for everyone. Adding new camping options, including the ability to arrive several days early, further enhanced the festival experience, allowing fans to settle in and soak up the atmosphere long before the first band hit the stage.
Regarding logistics, the festival ran smoothly, with significant improvements over previous years. Introducing a new ticketing system, allowing for early access to the camping areas, was well-received and helped prevent the traffic jams and chaos that have occasionally marred the festival’s opening days. Additionally, the event’s live stream, which garnered millions of views globally, allowed those who couldn’t attend to experience the magic of Wacken from afar.
However, not everything was perfect. Some festival-goers noted that the Scorpions’ set felt overly commercial, with the crowd’s enthusiasm seemingly dipping during less iconic tracks. Additionally, the minor rain showers, although providing some much-needed cooling, reminded attendees of the unpredictability of Wacken’s weather, though it did not lead to any significant disruptions.
In conclusion, Wacken Open Air 2024 was a resounding success. It merged an incredible lineup, improved logistics, and a vibrant, enthusiastic crowd to create a festival experience that few others can match. Whether a veteran attendee or a first-timer, Wacken 2024 offered something for every metal fan, reaffirming why it remains a pilgrimage site for metalheads worldwide. With the festival already sold out for 2025, it’s clear that Wacken Open Air continues to set the gold standard for what a metal festival should be.
The festival’s official after-movie and live performances are available online for those who missed out, offering a glimpse into the electric atmosphere that only Wacken can deliver. Expectations are already sky-high for what the organizers will pull off next year.
Please get your tickets for the 2025 edition here before they sell out!
