The agonizing eight-year drought for millions of Breaking Benjamin fans worldwide has officially been shattered. Speaking backstage during an exclusive interview with Moshpit Passion at the massive Rock am Ring 2026 festival in Nürburgring, Germany, guitarists Jasen Rauch and Keith Wallen delivered the blockbuster declaration the rock community has spent nearly a decade praying for: the band’s highly anticipated sixth studio album is 100% completed and mastered. Following a brutal four-year tracking cycle characterized by endless post-pandemic delays, the band is currently putting the finishing touches on the artwork ahead of a massive summer reveal.

“We’re Done”: Inside the Grueling 4-Year Studio Process

What we can say, I guess, is that we’ve been recording pretty much full time four years now post-pandemic. Some of these songs we re-recorded three different times… And so to kind of be on the back end of it now, I think it’s just something that we’re all really proud of.”

According to Rauch, the final tracking didn’t wrap up in a pristine, million-dollar studio, but rather in an improvised room on the fly while touring the US festival circuit.

The band realized they had exactly one missing vocal line left to capture for frontman Benjamin Burnley. Rather than waiting until they returned home, they brought their mobile tracking rigs straight into an artist enclosure at a US festival venue, asked permission to punch in the line right then and there, and officially slammed the book shut on the recording process. The mastered audio files were delivered back to the band just a couple of weeks ago, and the current focus has shifted entirely to finalizing artwork tweaks.

The Speedways promised us a pair of singles in advance of their forthcoming album, and boy, they sure have not disappointed! “I Shouldn’t Have Tried To Leave Without You” follows up last month’s wonderful “Luna.” If “Luna” was surprisingly upbeat for a Speedways song, “I Shouldn’t Have Tried To Leave Without You” is a definitive Matt Julian composition: a melancholy, achingly beautiful pop song exploring regret and longing in unflinching terms. How gorgeous are those guitars? A big selling point is that the great Mary Blount turns up on guest vocals, and she and Julian sound fantastic together. It’s easy to understand why these two songs had to each be singles in their own right. “I Shouldn’t Have Tried To Leave Without You” is technically the flip side of the vinyl release, but this is that rare case where the phrase “double A-side” isn’t a massive hunk of bullshit. The music video for the new song is much more DIY than the video for “Luna,” but it has plenty of charm and allows the band members (as well as Blount) to appear on screen. Now let the debate rage about which song is “the hit”! I’m too torn to cast a vote at the moment. If you’re after the 7″, Beluga Records, FOLC Records, and Stardumb Records can hook you up. 

So there we have it: the first Speedways vinyl record in over a year, and it’s nothing short of a gem. The new album The Magic Comes & The Magic Goes is due out by the end of the year, and the single tracks give me no reason not to have high hopes. This will be the band’s first release with Dan Spagnolo on lead guitar. As a lifelong Pennsylvanian, I’m thrilled to have one of our own (a yinzer, in fact!) playing in The Speedways! You can tell from all the interviews that the vibes are good and the new lineup is clicking. Could we be in store for the best Speedways album yet? I would not bet against it!

Back with his third single of 2026, Ricky Rochelle is in full pop-punk form on “Sad Girl Energy,” which features Billy Pfister playing guitar and bass as well as producing. These two have collaborated a couple times before, and again what’s so striking is how massive the production sounds. This is not your ordinary simply-recorded mid-fi pop-punk. This is some arena-sized sonic thunder, and it really works with Ricky’s heart-on-sleeve vocal style and big, booming hooks. The lyrics are fairly clear but also open to interpretation. Is the song about one particular sad girl or any sad girl? Ricky is feeling that energy, and he’s looking to respond with encouragement but also acceptance. I kind of like that his recent run of singles has continued to keep us guessing. You never know quite where he’s going to go with each new track, but his personal charm is the glue that holds it all together. “Sad Girl Energy” is well-timed for a summer release and ought to appeal to pop-punk fans of all stripes.

Schneverdingen, 6. Juni 2026 – Es gibt Festivals, die mit riesigen Budgets, gewaltigen LED-Wänden und internationalen Superstars beeindrucken wollen. Und es gibt Festivals wie das HÖPEN AIR in Schneverdingen. Veranstaltungen, die mit Herzblut organisiert werden, die ihre Besucher persönlich willkommen heißen und bei denen man vom ersten Moment an spürt, dass hier etwas Besonderes entstanden ist.

Auch 2026 zeigte das HÖPEN AIR wieder eindrucksvoll, warum es seit vielen Jahren zu den sympathischsten Open-Air-Veranstaltungen Norddeutschlands gehört. Mitten in der Lüneburger Heide entstand erneut ein Festivalgelände, das Musikfans aller Altersgruppen zusammenbrachte. Familien mit Kindern, Rockfans der ersten Stunde, Jugendliche und Besucher aus der gesamten Region feierten gemeinsam einen langen Tag voller Musik, guter Stimmung und bemerkenswerter Gastfreundschaft.

Ein Festival, das von Ehrenamt lebt

Das HÖPEN AIR ist weit mehr als ein Konzerttag. Es ist ein Paradebeispiel dafür, was ehrenamtliches Engagement bewirken kann.

Seit vielen Jahren organisiert der Stadtjugendring Schneverdingen das Festival mit unzähligen freiwilligen Helferinnen und Helfern. Wochenlange Vorbereitungen, Aufbauarbeiten, Logistik, Gastronomie und Betreuung der Besucher liegen in den Händen von Menschen, die ihre Freizeit investieren, um dieses Festival möglich zu machen. Gerade in Zeiten steigender Kosten und wachsender Herausforderungen für Kulturveranstaltungen verdient dieses Engagement höchste Anerkennung. Das HÖPEN AIR zeigt eindrucksvoll, dass kulturelle Veranstaltungen auch heute noch von Gemeinschaftssinn, Leidenschaft und lokalem Zusammenhalt getragen werden können.

An dieser Stelle auch ein herzliches Dankeschön an Michel Baden und das gesamte Team für die Einladung und die Möglichkeit, Teil dieses besonderen Tages zu sein.

Festivalgeschichte mit Charakter

Wer das HÖPEN AIR besucht, merkt schnell, dass hier keine anonyme Großveranstaltung stattfindet. Das Festival hat sich über Jahrzehnte hinweg zu einer festen Institution in der Heide entwickelt. Viele Besucher kommen seit Jahren regelmäßig nach Schneverdingen. Andere entdecken das Festival erstmals und sind überrascht, wie professionell eine ehrenamtlich organisierte Veranstaltung umgesetzt werden kann.

Der besondere Charme entsteht durch die Mischung aus regionaler Verbundenheit, familienfreundlicher Atmosphäre und einem Booking, das immer wieder namhafte Bands nach Schneverdingen bringt.

Faire Preise statt Festival-Abzocke

Ein weiterer Pluspunkt des HÖPEN AIR bleibt die Preisgestaltung. Während bei vielen Großveranstaltungen inzwischen zweistellige Beträge für einfache Verpflegung aufgerufen werden, bleibt Schneverdingen erfreulich bodenständig.

Auch beim Merchandising zeigte sich das Festival fanfreundlich. Das offizielle Festivalshirt war für 24 Euro erhältlich und entwickelte sich schnell zu einem begehrten Erinnerungsstück.

Besonders positiv fiel erneut das familienfreundliche Angebot auf. Für Kinder konnten Gehörschutz-Kopfhörer gegen ein Pfand von lediglich 10 Euro ausgeliehen werden. Eine kleine Maßnahme mit großer Wirkung, die zeigt, dass Veranstalter und Organisatoren auch an die jüngsten Besucher denken.

Vom Fischbrötchen bis zum Flammkuchen

Auch kulinarisch hatte das Festival einiges zu bieten.

Mehrere Foodtrucks verteilten sich über das Gelände und sorgten dafür, dass niemand hungrig bleiben musste. Zur Auswahl standen saftige Burger, klassische Bratwürste, frische Fischbrötchen, herzhafte Flammkuchen sowie süße Crêpes für den Nachtisch. An den Getränkeständen wurden Bier, Softdrinks und verschiedene Cocktails angeboten. Die Schlangen blieben trotz guter Besucherzahlen überschaubar und das Personal arbeitete den gesamten Tag über freundlich und zügig.

Raketen Erna eröffnet den Familientag

Bereits am Nachmittag wurde deutlich, dass das HÖPEN AIR mehr sein möchte als ein klassisches Rockfestival.

Mit Raketen Erna stand eine Band auf der Bühne, die speziell die jüngeren Besucher begeisterte. Die Berliner Kinderrocker sorgten für strahlende Gesichter vor der Bühne und bewiesen, dass gute Musik keine Altersgrenzen kennt. Während Eltern und Kinder gemeinsam tanzten und mitsangen, entwickelte sich eine Atmosphäre, die man auf vielen anderen Festivals vergeblich sucht.

MandoWar bringen die Wikinger nach Schneverdingen

Mit MandoWar wurde es anschließend deutlich lauter. Die ungewöhnliche Mischung aus Heavy Metal, Folk und einer gehörigen Portion Humor funktionierte hervorragend.

Die Band schaffte es innerhalb weniger Minuten, das Publikum auf ihre Seite zu ziehen. Zwischen Mandoline, Metal-Klassikern und augenzwinkernden Ansagen entstand eine Stimmung, die perfekt zum entspannten Charakter des Festivals passte.

The Feelgood McLouds liefern den Soundtrack für die Party

Spätestens bei The Feelgood McLouds gab es vor der Bühne kein Halten mehr. Die Folk-Punk-Band verwandelte das Gelände in einen großen Tanzplatz. Die Mischung aus keltischen Einflüssen, Punkrock und ausgelassener Feierlaune traf genau den Nerv des Publikums. Überall wurde getanzt, gesungen und mitgefeiert. Die Band erwies sich als perfekter Übergang zwischen Familienfestival und Rocknacht.

Rogers reißen die Bühne beinahe ab

Dann kamen die Rogers.

Die Düsseldorfer lieferten den wohl energiereichsten Auftritt des Tages ab. Von der ersten Minute an entwickelte sich vor der Bühne ein Ausnahmezustand.

Circle Pits, fliegende Arme, lautstarke Chöre und eine Band, die keine Sekunde stillstand. Die Rogers spielten, als ginge es um die letzte Show ihrer Karriere. Frontmann Chri verstand es perfekt, das Publikum einzubinden. Immer wieder wurden die Besucher Teil der Show. Die Reaktion ließ nicht lange auf sich warten. Und nicht zum Schluss kam auch noch ein Gast auf die Bühne: Wenke Zastrau von Mandel Kokain Schnaps gab sich die Ehre. Zuletzt hatte ich die Band von ihr beim Gig von Universum 25 als Support in Hamburg gesehen und auch hier zeigte sie, wie Punk-Rock geht.

Wer an diesem Abend wissen wollte, wie moderner deutschsprachiger Punkrock live funktionieren muss, bekam hier die perfekte Antwort geliefert.

The New Roses als verdienter Headliner

Mit The New Roses übernahm anschließend eine der erfolgreichsten deutschen Hard-Rock-Bands der vergangenen Jahre die Hauptrolle. Leider war Regen angesagt, der dann auch ziemlich pünktlich und ordentlich auf die Besucher schüttete. Aber Hey! Erfahrene und mitdenkende Besucher machen war? Genau! Sie bringen Regenjacken mit. Und wer die nicht hatte, konnte – wie sollte es bei der Orga des Festivals anders sein – direkt am Merchstand für schmale Taler einen neuen Regenponcho kaufen.

Die Wiesbadener präsentierten eindrucksvoll, warum sie inzwischen europaweit Hallen und Festivals bespielen. Songs wie „Down By The River“, „Glory Road“, „Life Ain’t Easy“ oder „Every Wild Heart“ wurden vom Publikum begeistert aufgenommen.

Die Band wirkte spielfreudig, souverän und bestens aufgelegt. Besonders Sänger Timmy Rough überzeugte mit seiner charismatischen Bühnenpräsenz und seiner kraftvollen Stimme. Der Auftritt hatte genau die richtige Mischung aus amerikanisch geprägtem Hard Rock, Stadionhymnen und ehrlicher Handarbeit.

LeFly setzen den Schlusspunkt

Als viele Festivals ihren Headliner bereits als Finale präsentieren, legte das HÖPEN AIR noch einmal nach.

LeFly übernahmen den Abschluss des Tages und sorgten dafür, dass die verbliebenen Energiereserven des Publikums restlos aufgebraucht wurden. Die Hamburger Mischung aus Rock, Reggae, Hip-Hop, Punk und Party funktionierte auch in Schneverdingen hervorragend. Vor der Bühne wurde noch einmal ausgelassen gefeiert, getanzt und gesungen.

Es war genau der richtige Abschluss für einen Tag, der von Anfang bis Ende von guter Laune geprägt war.

Fazit: Das HÖPEN AIR bleibt ein Juwel der Festivalsaison

Das HÖPEN AIR 2026 war nicht das größte Festival des Jahres. Es wollte es auch nie sein. Stattdessen bot es etwas, das inzwischen selten geworden ist: Nähe, Authentizität, faire Preise, hervorragende Organisation und ein Programm, das Generationen zusammenbringt. Der Stadtjugendring Schneverdingen und die vielen ehrenamtlichen Helfer haben erneut bewiesen, warum das HÖPEN AIR einen festen Platz im norddeutschen Festivalsommer verdient. Es war sicher eine der sympathischsten Veranstaltungen des Jahres mit einer Menge Spaß!

Wer am 6. Juni dabei war, nahm weit mehr mit nach Hause als nur ein paar Konzertfotos. Er nahm die Erinnerung an ein Festival mit, das von Menschen gemacht wird, die Musik lieben.

Und genau deshalb freuen wir uns schon jetzt auf das nächste HÖPEN AIR. Und mit etwas Glück kommt es aufgrund des Jubiläums ja schon 2027. Lassen wir uns überraschen und ganz sicher werden wir wieder darüber berichten.
