  • PSYCLE Interview Providence, Rhode Island Rock And Roll Band

    PSYCLE Interview

Providence, Rhode Island based rock band, PSYCLE  is one of the areas best original groups. Their sound, a mixture of hard rock and country tinged rock is a breath of fresh local air. With two EPs under their belts, this seasoned band is ready to take their music to the next level. Check out PSYCLE on facebook and their web site. They will not be local for long!!!
First and fore most who came up with the name: PSYCLE?  Psycle came about right before our first show back in 2000. We were asked by a promoter what our band name was and we hadn’t even discussed it. The idea of things coming full circle and getting what you give is something that has always fascinated me. Karma is on my mind often and I have always believed that if you put good things into the universe it will find its way back to you. Unfortunately, the universe doesn’t believe in time management hahahahha
You have an almost country rock flavor to your sound. How would you describe your music?  We have been referred to as “Modern Classic Rock” which to us is a huge compliment. All 4 of us have a very well rounded list of influences and it definitely shows in the music. We never try to push an agenda or a certain style with the music that we write together and we allow the song to dictate what it needs to be.

Tell us about your endorsements. We are endorsed by WB Gear, Rane Clothing Company, Rock Relentless Clothing, Pick Guy, Man Mane, Scorpion Percussion, Looks that Kill Rock Shop and Xvive Audio
Take us through the writing process. Does everyone contribute?  We all contribute together. There is never a set way we write and I believe that we do our best work when the 4 of us are together in a room just talking and trying different things. There is no ego, nothing forced. Our drummer Jay can write a guitar part or our guitarist Joe can suggest something vocally. Everything that is written for our music is done 100% by all 4 of us together. That doesn’t mean that someone doesn’t bring down ideas but we allow the creative process to be open for whatever will make the song better. We have taken a 10 second piece of something someone brought down, ripped it apart and wrote a whole song just being inspired by that piece.
Something in your personal music collections that fans might not expect?  For me, probably A Tribe Called Quest or maybe even Hall and Oates. I think that all 4 of us have been able to appreciate songs or music in general that might not be in our taste but we can appreciate the talent of it. We were having a discussion about Jaco Pastorius the other night and his genius.
What has been the most challenging aspect of being a musician: I would say that the hardest aspect is the unknown. That could be a show, on stage playing, pretty much every aspect can either hold you under the water or pull you up at a moment’s notice. It’s really the blessing and the curse of what we do. You have to have very thick skin and you have to believe in what you are doing at all times
Is the New England  original music scene positive for your music?  The scene in New England as people is very positive however we have lost a lot of great venues over the years which has hurt a lot of us. I will say that the metal scene in New England is incredible. There aren’t many true rock bands in our area that we have played with and I think that is a good thing because it means people are following their own path.
What makes a perfect song for you? What are the elements for your ears?  THE MELODY! I had to put that in all caps. The melody to me will dictate the beauty of a song or will be the crushing blow. It has to have a flow, it has to fit the music. Songs to me need to be cohesive and if this makes any sense, you can’t write fast lyrics for a slow song or vice versa. To me it will always come down to melody.
Favorite local club to perform in?  I would have to say The Cove Music Hall in Worcester. Ted is a great owner and they have great sound and lighting

Name one band that you would love to tour with? Alter Bridge……and 1a would be Sevendust
Strangest thing that ever happened at a gig: So many stories but if I had to pick one we were playing a show at an Irish Pub and the place was so packed during the summer time that the a/c unit which was located above the stage stopped working and it started to rain on us during the set from the ceiling. I have a million other stories hahahah
You have 2 EP/CD’s, Do you find the need for full length albums to be created anymore?  No doubt about it. We are actually in process of discussing this for our next album. It’s never a lack of music but giving the audience what they can handle. A lot of people don’t pay attention to a full album anymore but I always feel that if you can give them an album filled with great songs instead of 2 great songs and the rest filler, they won’t take it out of their player
Is social media a positive or negative impact on your music? Social media is a huge focus these days and I spend way more time than I probably would like to. It is a necessary evil to build the music family and I have met some great people thru it. I think that you have to market yourself the right way but you have to be smart and have responsibility in what you write. It will always be found and will always be used against you. It’s probably better if it’s being used to hold you up
Any subject matter you will not write about? I am lucky enough to do all of the lyric writing for the band and I am grateful for that. The guys have a lot of faith in my writing and it’s my greatest passion. I don’t believe anything is off limits but how you write it and convey it is extremely important. You have people feelings in the palm of your hands and you have to always consider the power of song. I never try to write in a literal sense and always give freedom for the listener to have their own interpretation.
Anything you would like to say to your fans? We can’t thank everyone enough for their support over the years and the best is yet to come
Psycle’s music gets 10/10 Wolf Howls

You know what’s funny about people who complain that metal is just a bunch of loud ugly noise? They’re absolutely right. I’d like to think of us metalheads as connoisseurs of music that sounds like a deranged cookie monster manning a jackhammer.

  • WINDHAND release video and lead single "Grey Garden" from new album "Eternal Return" coming October 5th! #relapserecords #doommetalfront

Richmond, Virginia’s psychedelic heavyweights WINDHAND unveil “Grey Garden”, the video and lead single off their forthcoming album “Eternal Return”.

“Eternal Return” is a complete life-to-death journey. As unplanned things go, it’s an observation of as well as a reflection on life’s ups and downs, joys and sorrows, beginnings and ends. Between the band’s 2015 highly acclaimed “Grief’s Infernal Flower” and 2018’s “Eternal Return” WINDHAND welcomed new life, survived lineup changes and mourned unexpected death. The songs and song ordering are the direct result of those experiences. Where “Halcyon” is assured in its opening, the closing track “Feather” is its funeral march.

WINDHAND wrote “Eternal Return” all throughout the winter. Out of the sessions, “Halcyon”, “Grey Garden”, “Red Cloud” and the monstrous “Eyeshine” emerged as the heaviest tracks, while “Pilgrim’s Rest”, “Diablerie” and “Feather” embodied the more reflective side of WINDHAND. The juxtaposition of heavy, psychedelic and pensive is less like Black Sabbath or Sleep and more like Soundgarden or Veruca Salt. But the name-drops aren’t absolute so much as signals of WINDHAND’s ability to stretch beyond genre confines.

“Eternal Return” represents a new era for the group, a chrysalis moment that takes them to new and unforeseen heights. Boosted by Garrett Morris’ consistently cool riffs-forged at the crossroads of Iommi’s otherworldly import and Kurt Cobain’s spontaneous precocity-powered by Ryan Wolfe and Parker Chandler’s groove-laden rhythms, and propelled by Dorthia Cottrell’s smoky yet wistful vocals, WINDHAND’s new album is a two-step jump for Richmond’s finest purveyors of the psycho-actively heavy. Adorned by Arik Roper’s (Sleep, High on Fire) impressive cover art, Eternal Return not only looks the part of WINDHAND’s artistic growth but sounds the part.

WINDHAND brought Jack Endino back into the fold. Together, they spent two weeks recording at Soundhouse Recording in Seattle. Described as “smooth” and “intense”, the sessions with the famed producer were just what WINDHAND wanted. Endino also understood the group’s artistic progression, chiefly the admiration of and blending in late 80s/early 90s grunge. Out of it all, WINDHAND continued to refactor and refine their vision of heavy. A new era of psychedelic heaviness is upon us with WINDHAND’s genre-blurring “Eternal Return”. Sweet, fuzzed-out oblivion has never been closer.

“Eternal Return” sees its release October 5th on Relapse Records. WINDHAND venture on a full North American tour this fall with Satan’s Satyrs.

  • JUDAS PRIESTESS/MELIA SHOW REVIEW 8/10/2018

The Greasy Luck Brewpub and its adjoining rock venue,”the Vault” have hosted a number of notable rock and heavy rock acts lately. The venue is large enough to handle these acts yet intimate enough to offer ample viewing of the stage from anyplace in the room. My experiences there have been nothing but positive from the menu to the bartenders this place is a top notch premier venue.

On Friday, August 10th, the all female Judas Priest tribute band, JUDAS PRIESTESS entered the vault and tore the roof off. The opening act, MELIA, features a  flashy guitarist/singer, with a quick hand and a raspy, soulful voice.

The elements of pop and alternative rock were there, as well as some punk and hard rock influences. it all blended together with a tight band behind her.

MELIA rips on her guitar but at times pulls back and allows her band to shine. In particular was the incredibly tight backing musicians, Angelo Marasco on bass, Jimmy Whitaker on rhythm guitar, and the show stopping percussionist, Erik Wheater. Overall MELIA put on a fantastic show and she clearly has the stage presence to rock any venue.

Up next was the mighty JUDAS PRIESTESS. These women hit that stage running and unleashed a torrent of molten priest classics and new material. Relentless and poised to strike they head banged their way through the set  with a fiery rapid fire of hits. Undeniable is their passion as not only musicians but as true fans of JUDAS PRIEST. Between sets the powerhouse vocalist herself, Militia explained that she has always been a fan of JUDAS PRIEST and the band has even received the blessing of the metal god himself, Rob Halford.

JUDAS PRIESTESS distance themselves from other copy cat tributes as they clearly play the songs not true to the notes but true to the feel. The clothing and even the equipment is their own look and their own style. They just happened to paying tribute to JUDAS PRIEST. The band is clearly having as much fun performing as we are listening. The twin guitar attack of Josette and Rena Sands will melt you into submission.;While the rapid fire bass licks of Gyda Gash sync up with the blazing hellfire of drummer, Hillary Blaze.

Snarky titles aside, I’m not nearly enough of an elitist to bash on the commercial stuff of the early millennium. It is, after all, what I grew up with and I still have a hell of a soft spot in my heart for it. That said, I’m not playing any on this podcast because there’s only so much retro-nostalgic BS I can handle

Vince Neil, the legendary front man of Mötley Crüe, is an international superstar, accomplished businessman and heartfelt philanthropist. His unmistakable voice leads some of the greatest rock songs of a generation including “Wild Side,” “Shout at the Devil,” “Home Sweet Home,” “Girls, Girls, Girls,” “Dr. Feelgood,” “Kickstart My Heart,” “Same Ol’ Situation,” and many others. Raised on the tough streets of Compton, California, Vince Neil fell in love with music as a child, developing a broad vocabulary that ranged from classic Motown to hard rock. As a teenager, he began performing with local bands and soon discovered both a passion for the stage and a natural talent as a singer and performer. He fronted the popular band Rock Candy before reuniting with high school buddy Tommy Lee in 1981, establishing his spot in rock and roll history with the formation of Mötley Crüe. Mötley Crüe’s epic 34‐year run included countless multi‐platinum releases, more than 22 hit singles, 100 million albums sold and dozens of global tours with sold out arenas, inclusive of some of the largest venues in the world.  The band completed “The Final Tour” on New Year’s Eve 2015, closing the book that told the story of their iconic career. Despite the Mötley Crüe departure from the rock world, however, Vince Neil shows no sign of slow down, continuing to carry on with the unending “The Legacy Continues Tour”. Neil continues to perform all the classic Mötley Crüe hits with select cuts from his three solo albums. Additionally, this badass performer is working on new music, and has hinted about performing some of it during this tour: “I’ll say that we are recording some stuff for a new record this year,” he said in a Loudwire interview in January. “You often hear some surprises at our shows. I don’t want to give away some of those surprises…The music is exciting. It’s good, fun, nasty, raw energy and great songs.” Presently, Neil remains primarily occupied answering the call to his immense following with shows internationally in conjunction with the culmination of his fourth solo album. Besides being an international superstar, Neil is an accomplished businessman and heartfelt philanthropist. He manages to own several restaurants and his own brand of both tequila and vodka. Certainly not least, his efforts have rallied millions of dollars for a non‐profit organization, The Skylar Neil Memorial Foundation, in tribute to the unfortunate loss of his daughter to cancer in 1995. In January of 2017 Vince Neil is back in the TV spotlight once again, as a contestant on NBC’s The Celebrity Apprentice, featuring new host Arnold Schwarzenegger.
