20 Years of Slaytanic Panic: International Day of Slayer Founder Breaks Silence on Holiday’s Dark, Unredacted History

The world of heavy metal has officially reached a monumental milestone as Saturday, June 6, 2026, marks the 20th anniversary of the International Day of Slayer. In a historic first, holiday founder Jeff Tandy has stepped out of the shadows to reveal the unredacted, often controversial history of the tradition on the “Talkin’ Slayer” and “Metalenema” podcasts.
From its 2006 origins as a satirical strike against religious landmarks to becoming a globally recognized event sanctioned by Nuclear Blast, the holiday remains the ultimate “rejection of everything conventional,” coinciding this year with frontman Tom Araya’s 65th birthday.
6/6/06: The Birth of a Metal Insurgency
As detailed in the explosive anniversary interview between Tandy and unofficial Slayer biographer D.X. Ferris, the holiday was established in 2006 as a deliberate parody of the Christian “National Day of Prayer.” By linking the date 6/6/06 to the Biblical Number of the Beast, Tandy created a lightning rod for metalheads worldwide to “stand unified” and prove the community had a voice.
However, the holiday’s path wasn’t always celebratory. Tandy and co-founder Dag Nilsen were forced to publicly distance themselves from the event in 2007 after radical fans attempted to link the celebration to high-profile vandalism at religious sites, including St. Joseph’s Seminary in New York. To avoid legal heat while keeping the fire burning, the founders operated under a rotating list of aliases for years.

Tom Araya at 65: The Numerical Fate of a Legend
The synchronization of the holiday is no accident. June 6 is the birthday of Slayer’s iconic throat and bassist, Tom Araya. Born on 6/6/1961, Araya hits the retirement milestone of 65 today. While the band famously “retired” in 2019 at the Los Angeles Forum, their 2024 reformation proved that the Slaytanic itch never truly leaves.

The 20th-anniversary celebration is a massive co-production involving Tandy’s Metalenema show and Ferris’s Talkin’ Slayer podcast. Ferris, the author of the critically acclaimed biography “Slayer 66 2/3: A Metal Band Biography,” recently launched Season 4 of his show with a deep-dive tribute to the late Jeff Hanneman.
LIVE & LOUD: Stream the World’s Hardest Radio Station 24/7 Below! The updated 4th edition of the biography (now running a massive 639 pages) is cited by Record Collector as “the most metal book ever written.” Ferris’s research-heavy approach—featuring 795 citations—aims to document the band with the “professionalism and respect” the genre deserves.
“Slayer is an ultimate truth,” says Jeff Tandy. “It is a show of force. It is a rejection of everything courteous and reasonable. It gets into the primacy that allowed human beings to take over the planet.”
